I love Finland! Especially the northern part :) Maybe you have been there before, but when in Helsinki I can definitely recommend to reserve a day to take a ferry and visit the fortress island of Suomenlinna. The ferry ride takes about 20 minutes, and it is an awesome historical place to walk around and explore at your own pace. There is also a small supermarket on the island, so you can buy some snacks and food in case you get hungry.

There is a charm to the country for sure. Nate has been up north for work, but we haven’t explored yet. Someday! So much more to see!

The birds at #4 are in the "Passer" genus and the species could be Passer domesticus - house sparrow. These domesticated with humans in e.g. urban environments as they specialise in picking their food from horse and bovine "droppings". With the disappearance of horses from the streets, these birds would eat things humans left over for them. In my youth, after a meal, we would take the table cloth/linen into the garden and shake the breadcrumbs etc out of that. The sparrows would be waiting in trees to dive onto these tiny pieces. Once abundant in the NL, they have slowly disappeared from urban environments. They live in social groups and if you want to make them a birds nest then it has to be a sort of apartment building as they need their promiscuity facilitated. Having stables with horses also helps, if your stable boys/girls move the manure to places where the sparrows can feast on it. If you don't care about these tweeties then use the manure from your stable as fertiliser in your flower garden (it's easier on the plants in there than bovine (B) BS). The common English name "sparrow" may confuse Dutch speakers of English in that we name a bird "spreeuw" and that reminds of sparrow - but the spreeuw is significantly larger than the sparrow, yet also in the order of Passeriformes and that "spreeuw" bird is called (common) starling in English (Sturnus vulgaris). I mean, Anglo-Saxon language hooligans name a common bird "tit" so the Parus major in Dutch is "koolmees" (coal mays) but in English called "great tit". Hooligans.

Great vlog! I have been to the north of Finland but never been in Helsinki.. One day 🙂 The last church is the Orthodox church as many Russians from St. Petersburg travelled to Helsinki for a day when the war was not yet started. There was an convenient trainline to and from Helsinki to St. Petersburg but now the borders are closed for Russians.
@nateandkatrinadotheworld12 күн бұрын
Thanks! Nate visited St. Petersburg years ago and they talked about how all the Finnish teenagers would come over the border to party for the weekend…. Such a mess now….

@@nateandkatrinadotheworld I travelled to Moscow and St. Petersburg during 10 years for business. There are beautiful sites. Russia is intriguing but Putin made it into a Soviet Union v2.0 .. he’s not for the Russians solely for Putin, Putin and Putin. The man is ultra rich !

You just don't belong to a museum yet. Wait for couple of decades and maybe you'll get there. The memory lapses sure aren't the first signs to emerge and the jazz music isn't the most hippest genre at the moment. Plus your dialogue has that old couple dialogue vibe to it. Thumbs up.

Did you have a chance to visit that part of Russia that was liberated? Though I suppose that might be not possible for the average tourist right now. Oh well, should you want to return, I would advise Oulu in winter. A paradise for winter cycling, according BicycleDutch 😂 ❤

Great-grand-mother is 3 generations before you, so assuming equal chances for all genes, you have 1/8th of her. Equal chances never happen, though. If she was the female-female-female ancestor, then you have her mitochondria (not human DNA but important), and your X chromosome (brain anatomy, vision) is very dependent on the female line (for men). Women get a complete X chromosome copy from dad, boys nothing. Which might explain why some fathers "don't understand their sons." Finland has had Russian rule and probably gene injection, but also Swedish AFAIK. The "real" Fins often have a bit of what's now called "Asian" DNA that IMO stems from a period when the Northern Eurasian region from Finland to the Pacific was inhabited by peoples that still needed to mutate into white v Asian.
@nateandkatrinadotheworld12 күн бұрын
That is a very detailed breakdown! Nate’s 23 and Me DNA test thing shows him as 9.8% Finnish…
