In 2010-2020, a Monster III broke because of “snapped axles” and overweight from the cars, the riders could be heard screaming in terror as the arms crashed to the ground… The model of a squid/octopus on top fell onto one of the arms coming off of the ride

I think these types of rides are my favourite and considering the length of the cycles they are better value for money than rollercoasters (whilst also causing less sinus issues from wind blasting up the nose), especially the ones with spinning gondolas.
@A7x_Forever
@A7x_Forever 4 жыл бұрын
The Monster III can actually be a thrilling ride experience if you know how! As Alex already mentioned at the end of the Break Dance video, you can shift your weight in such a way that the gondolas spins and never stops. To do this, sit to the right of the gondola. Ideally, you'd have the gondola for yourself. Try to keep a steady rhythm and as the eccentric goes up and down, "throw" your body into the right-hand side of the gondola. The idea is to push/pull it over a certain degree of movement, at which point the momentum does the rest of the job. It's kinda hard to explain. You just gotta find your own rhythm when trying it out.
@SchwarzkopfFanboy

This is exactly what makes them so insanely fun. You can have a relax ride, but you can also have an insane ride where you just have non stop spinning, man it's so good, I really miss it

@@SchwarzkopfFanboy Fun fact: There is no flat ride that actually makes me dizzy. With the exception of a Monster III when I shift my weight. The last time I did it, I was literally spinning almost from beginning to end, and even when the ride was stopped, I was still going for a couple of seconds. Afterward, I was dizzy for about 10 seconds or so lol. As you said; it can be insane!

@@A7x_Forever I never got sick on a funfair ride. My most insane ride was on Power Polyp in the Netherlands. From beginning to end non stop spinning, and it was just SO insanely fast! And spinning the gondola is also pretty exhausting in my opninion.

Every year I try to ride the Aqua Riesen Polyp from operator/showman René Lauwers. It’s a Schwarzkopf Monster III. He gives good rides with lots of speed, power and different sensations. Love this ride the most. Especially when it catapults you back or give you the sensation it will crash into the public 😁

I've been riding it since 2011, and I got to ride it this year at Aalst, and wow, I was impressed. After all those years of riding it, I never knew it so good. It wasn't R. Lauwers that was operating, but the man gave an impressive show with some very good music! He also let the machine go maximum speed for a longer time than usual! It's really one of the best Monster IIIs I've done after this experience.

Monster was the first ride in as ever trained on in 1997 during my park years. Ours was all manual and a pain to operate. It liked to drift due to weight distribution. We also had an Octopus with 2 gondolas per arm. Not sure if that was a modification. Octopus was stamped on the plate. Lakemont Park, Altoona PA. The park no longer has these rides today.

I really enjoyed watching this. I worked the Monster at CP from '92-'94, and have a lot of great memories of those summers, not the least of which was meeting my wife! About 90% of the time, when mentioning that I worked the Monster I've have had to explain which ride it is. I hate to see the horrid color scheme being used now, they should go back to the classic black and orange look!

I was a rides operator for Kings Dominion (81-85) and ran the Monster in the 84 season. BY FAR my favorite ride to operate, specifically because it was all manual. I don't know if anyone has mentioned it previously but the reason Monsters were disappearing was because the owners could not get parts for them. Albert has opened a factory and is making parts for the Eyerly rides. 2nd Eyerly built a Monster using Octopus style tubs for the 1962 Worlds fair in Seattle. If you google midway photos or old video on you tube you can see it. I enjoy your work so much. Keep it up guys.

When I worked at Joyland in Wichita in the late ‘60s, I often ran an original Octopus as well as a Rock-O-Plane. The controls were very definitely manual. Two levers, one for the sweeps (arms), and one for the crank. They were combination clutch/brake controls. The Rock-O-Plane used an identical control, but only one. They probably used some of the same parts, just as the Eli Ferris wheels and Scramblers used an almost identical operator control. I ran those, too, everything in the park really, as I was often the relief operator. My favorites? The 16 seat Eli wheel, and the very first C.P.Huntington train.

I must've been around 3 when i saw one of them from a Ferris wheel. The lights fascinated me and i really wanted to ride it. I believe it was Monster 3. My dad took me onto the ride and our car had a hole, which in hindsight was most likely not a safety concern, but i was so young i didn't know that yet. The restraints didn't really hold me tight enough and my dad was clutching me the whole time so i wouldn't move around too much. I was absolutely terrified this ride for ages, because of this first experience. It is one of my favourites now though.

I rode the one at Six Flags Great America and it been fully rehabbed as it only tilted in one direction (like a spider ride) but it now rotates properly. They moved it to the west side of the park so a new flat ride can be installed in its spot as a new roller coaster needed the back side of its plot (where the queue wrapped around the ride to the "station" for loading.) It was gone for a year for the rehab but it has all new parts, lights, and MANUAL CONTROLS for the ride ops. It is the last ride at the park where the operator can "fake" the riders in thinking the cycle is over, in what I call a "fakey" which is normally happens in carnivals (fairs) when the ops had to keep the rides running so people would know that they were open for business.

There is a little family park near me and our 2020 edition is a relocated Eyerly Spider (The park only has 2 coasters a 1999 dragon wagon from IAAPA and last year we got an Orient Express clone that is really similar to the dragon wagon, so this is very exciting because most of the flat rides are kiddie rides too).

There are variants of the Octopus that have two seats at the end of each arm. Also there's a rare Spider that has eight arms. The Octopus, Spider, and Monster are manually controlled. At least the ones by Eyerly. Conklin Shows used to have one that they toured with and Canada's Wonderland also had one. Throw one of the throttles part way and just the arms move counter clockwise. Throw it all the way and the arms and the crosses move. Throw the second arm and the eccentric moves clockwise. Pulling the throttles will make the arms move clockwise and the eccentric counter clockwise. Not sure on the crosses.

Good history info...one change..I worked for Park Lease Inc.which was part of Eyerly Aircraft...these were the Loop-D-Loop...Rollo Plane and The Monster in Palisades Amusement Park...I was the assistant manager for the 1965 season until I got drafted into the Army..the correct pronunciation is I R LEE not EAR LEE...the father's 2 sons occasionally came out to see us from Salem Oregon...one was John and the other Jack....The Monster was always and will always be my favorite passion. The original Monster was piece mealed together as to include motors taken off the moth ball fleet battle ships. It was first utilized in the Seattle World's Fair. In Seattle it had a gasoline engine. Ours had 5 sweeps..the newer ones had 6 sweeps.

The last build is the Power Polyp in the Netherlands it is in the video at 16.25, after the parkour/sound factory story.. After Stein had gone bankrupt, the first owner build the rest of it themselves with help of some dutch company's. Polypweb (one of your sources) is part of my website. Nice Video, but what about the monster by Bakker (NL) it is also really common in Europe. These sombrero rides have Bakker style eccentric mechanism. Bakker eccenter is static height and only rotates and the arms get pulled to it via hydraulic. At Schwarzkopf the arms are connected to the eccenter via solid rods. When the eccenter rises the arms also gets pulled up.

To this day I despise riding rides with gondolas attached to long arms, whether it be a monster type ride or one where you push a button and control the height of your own carts, out of fear that an arm snapped. You have just confirmed my fear and I doubt any amount of bribery from my friends can get me on one ever again😂

It isn't so bad. Most of the gondolas don't spin very much, so you're pretty much just going around while moving slightly side to side. If you look at 3:15, most of them are pretty tame... and then there's one gondola just going nuts. :D

Was the old orange ride at the MOA considered a monster or octopus type ride? I can’t remember what it was called but I remember riding it many times growing up. They put the bubble guppies ride about in its place now

I never thought about it, but idk who built each ride.. idk the manufacturers they used for those.
