As far as the history aspect goes, you missed out the vintage ride that most resembled the modern matterhorns. They were originally called Mont Blanc rides, but were also renamed Airways in the UK. As far as I’m aware, there are no original versions remaining (certainly not in the UK), but photos and models can certainly be found. Also, if you ever get the chance, the Moonrocket at Dingles is a fun ride. There’s even a book entirely dedicated to it!

@@CoasterCollege Fairground history in the UK is a pretty niche subject that’s not widely documented, so it’s not so surprising that you might have missed it. This is one of the first rides I rode as a kid. It was enclosed, called the Himalayan, fully winter mountain-themed with skiers and a painted abominable snowman, had the swinging cars, and the ride operator had control. Because it was the early ‘70s the soundtrack was high-energy disco. It was an amazing ride!

I loved the lights and the music these rides would play. Alas, as a 7 year old I wasn’t allowed to ride these kids if flying bobs. Not sure why because a year later Magic Mountain had a Bayern Kurve and a Himalayan and I got to ride those! But then again I was with my aunt at Magic Mountain and not my mom so…

I first rode a basic Himalaya as a toddler at “The Land Of Make Believe”. It was fun because it had a cute background and a mirror ball in the center. That was probably 1994-1995. In 1995-1996 I rode a “Super Himalaya” at the Flemington Fair and a “Musik Express” at The Great Escape in Lake George. Lake George had an “Action Park” and this was my first Flying Bobsled (Matterhorn). It hypnotized me. Where Musik Express rides used links and yellows and oranges, the Flying Bobsled was white, blue, purple, and SPIT FOG along with music. It was so intense. It wrecked my sisters stomach and my mom hated it. But I loved it.

I know I am a bit late here as you posted this a couple of years ago but thanks for covering these famous flats. When I think of Matterhorn I think of the Disney Bob sled coaster and my first real roller coaster. I remember being at some carnival or fair when I was a young child and seeing a flying Bob ride. In fact that is what it was called. Flying Bobs. I also remember my mom not allowing me to ride it. “That’s not for kids!” She said even though I did see some older kids riding it. When I say older I mean maybe 12 and older. I was only 7 years old at the time. I do remember watching it and wanting to ride it but to no avail. It was onk because I was allowed to ride Disney’s Matterhorn and at the time that was a big deal. Of course maybe a year later I got to ride a Bayern Kurve ride known as Swiss Twist at Magic Mountain. I rode with my aunt at the time and it was scary but it also became a favorite! They had a Himalayan too! That rode frontward and them backwards. Then I moved up to bigger scarier roller coasters like Revolution when I was 10 years old and then Colossus in 1980 at 12 years old. Watching these videos brings back memories when I felt pure unbridled joy!

I used to operate a Bertazzon Matterhorn at the Columbus Zoo. It was fun, but we didn't allow riders to rock the seats, so the quality of the ride was dependent on the speed. We operated it on a slower setting, but we had an employee ride night and they kicked it up to one of the faster cycles and it was pretty great. Still, one of my favorites to operate.

In Argentina, we had 2 Matterhorns in two of the biggest theme parks in the country in the 80s-90s. People here remember the ride a lot because of an unfortunate accident that happened in the park “Italpark” that caused the d*ath of a 16 year old girl when one of the ride gondolas came off. The park closed after that. And the other remaining Matterhorn is also not operating anymore as that park was also closed. Very interesting video!

Here's my current wishlist for future FROTW videos (updated now that 'Matterhorn' has been done): Trabant / Hully Gully - this was mentioned in a previous video, and I look forward to seeing it. Rainbow / 1001 Nacht Paratrooper Orbiter Miami Hurricane . [old-school and/or unique] Boomerang ... I remember seeing this at Casino Pier a LONG time ago, when I was too young for such things 'Sidewheeler' (or maybe 'Sidewinder') ... looking a bit like the inner workings of a watch, this one-of-a-kind SFGA installation was something to see

Trabant is high on our list too. I tried looking into Boomerang at Casino Pier and I could find nothing, unless you know of somewhere where I can find more info it will likely never be covered. Sidewinder looks like it may be a decent ride to cover, we probably should have mentioned it in our scrambler video. It may get its own episode.

@@CoasterCollege I’m not surprised this one was difficult to locate. There were several different types of rides with the name “Boomerang”. This was an “Old School” Flat Ride. It operated at Casino Pier, Seaside Heights, NJ some time in the late ‘70s - early ‘80s. I remember it having 4 padded Tubs that could fit about 4 riders each. When all of the Tubs were filled, the Operator would push each Tub out to a turntable where it would hook onto one of the spokes coming out from the middle. After all the tubs were hooked up, the Operator would start the ride and the Tubs would be going in a circle with some very heavy positive Gs. The speed would gradually increase until the Operator would release one of the Tubs at the proper moment to go through a Horseshoe shaped tunnel where the Tub would collide with one side of the walls to the other, until it made it back to the station. Another of the remaining Tubs would then be released in the same fashion. You never knew exactly when the Operator would release one of the Tubs, so the anticipation would keep growing until that moment. It operated in other Parks that are long gone now, another I recall operated at Bertrand Island Park at Lake Hopatcong, NJ., which closed in 1983.

Great video as always 😎👍🏾 There is only one Herschell Flying Bobs I know of that still operates, and that's the one at Indiana Beach, which came from Coney Island Cincinnati. The easy way to tell a Chance and a Herschell apart is the guide wheel and track placement. The guide wheels and track are placed behind the scenery closer to the middle of the trailer on Chance models, whereas the Herschell models has the track and guide wheels readily visible (the track is much bigger around). Mack Matterhorns are my favorite ones because they're simultaneously smooth and fast. Cedar Point toned down the ride cycle of their Matterhorn, but the Matterhorn at Geauga Lake (called Matterhorn at first, then Yukon Yahoo and then HayBaler) positively FLEW. It had to go at least 13 rpm. I'm not a fan of the Chance models because the seats swing a little TOO much for my taste and it's a much rougher ride. The smoothest Chance one I've ever been on was Talley's Big Kahuna, which is a rethemed Thunder Bolt, which you actually have in the video. There are quite a few that come to Ohio, such as Durant Amusements' Flying Bobs, Lisko's Music Fest, Burton Brothers used to bring a Rock N Roll to some of their fairs, Talley now brings Big Kahuna, PrimeTime brings an Alpine Bobs to some events. We didn't used to have this many Flying Bobs rides until just a few years ago. I'm also not much of a fan of the Bertazzon model either, although they do look cool. The Columbus Zoo has had a Bertazzon Matterhorn since 2008 called Safari Stampede, but they run it very slow. Ohio State Fair used to have a Bertazzon Matterhorn called Rock N Roll. Has the same problem that I feel the Chance models have, seats swing too much and it's just not a smooth ride. I'd probably have to ride a faster one to change my mind.

If anyone has some spare time when in Blackpool, get yourself on Flying Bob. YES! This has always been like my favorite flat ride to go on at my local State Fair. It's called Snow Bobs or something and I really enjoy the laterals. Edit: I think the one that I ride is a newer model of the Chance Rides version. It feels like it goes really fast, you almost go sideways at the top of the hills. Also the vehicles are pretty easy to swing by shifting your weight from one side of the cart to the other. Unfortunately you're always told to not rock it back and forth. This year when I go to my State Fair, I'm going to ride every ride in the "big kids"/"adults" area and try to ask the op about the manufacturer and model of the attraction!

I love my local matterhorn, mine at the local park (rock n' roll at Oaks Park) is awesome with the operator actually speaking through the PA informing the riders. The low-impact nature and being able to cycle 20-30 guests per ride cycle makes it awesome to do repeat runs on compared to other rides that are more popular, have less capacity and longer queues. Thanks for the tip on trying to rock the coaster that is something that I can try next time I go ride on it. One coaster you could do for a future ride of the week is Squirrel Cage / Rock-O-Plane , which is also at my local park and is super popular here compared to other ride offerings at the park.

I don't recall if any of the travelling shows I've been to have ever had anything but Chance models, but that said though love the hell out of those Chance models, they go fast, you get some good swings, and they seem to give a lot of control to the operator instead of just always going with the same cycle so it gives even more variety and re-rideability to a ride that already gives you different cycles. I also had no clue these had so much history going back to the 1800s, cool to learn there's so much backstory to these other than someone deciding "Well what if we just took a Himalaya and made it swing?" (Well... that kind of is the story but there's way more history and evolution in that) It's a shame to hear Chance discontinued their, thankfully there's so many out in the wild they'll still be around for years to come but hopefully they keep making parts or possibly even having enough demand to bring it back, it'd be a sad day if these got to the end of their life and it becomes a rare ride

I love me a good Matterhorn ... but note the emphasis on 'good'. Sadly, the only ones I find these days may as well be kiddie rides for as slow as they go. In particular, I *despise* the "Rock & Roll" version, but that's the only one I see these days, both at carnivals and at the beach. I'm not too thrilled with "Thunderbolt" either, and it's hard to find anything beyond these. My favorite one, historically, was "Disco Star" at Casino Pier (Seaside Heights, NJ). That one had great laterals, a long cycle, and ran in both directions. It was around at the same time as a Reverchon "Himalaya" (which I've always preferred over other "Musik Express" rides), in what I considered a Golden Age for flatrides at the beach. I give an honorable mention to "Schlittenfahrt" at Morey's Pier (it was around at the same time as the long-lost "Canyon Trip", mentioned in a previous FROTW video). One point about this version: no secure harnesses; you were just trusted not to jump out of your car as the ride was in motion. I would *love* to experience a Reverchon Matterhorn, but I don't know of any near where I am and I don't see myself visiting another country just for that particular opportunity. Loved the video ... and one more ride I can check off my personal wishlist. Thx again!

Request: (I'm not sure if you already did this one but i haven't seen a video about it) can you do the cliff hanger rides (the kites that spin in the air) for your next flat ride of the week?

I was hoping to learn how this ride is operated. When the guy yells, "Do you wanna go faster?", what does he do to make the ride go faster?

Australia has 3 travelling sobema Matterhorns 1 that has an enclosed canopy we once had an SDC park model Matterhorn at dreamworld built inside a fibreglass snow capped mountain with a waterfall coming down the side and the indoors section was pitch black and in the roof was an animatronic abominable snow man creature with red glowing eyes probably the best themed Matterhorn flat rides in the world and a few travelling alpine bobs and music express rides from different manufacturers

I love most coasters, but rides like this and the teacup type rides end my day. I'll have a headache or worse for several hours after riding. Maybe it's age or something else idk. I used to love rides like this as a kid.
