Coated Car Leather: What is the difference and how do you know?

I just realized we have similar taste on dressing style: I really like Puma's design and I have had a pair for about 8 years or more now. Regarding my feedback for your questions at the end, me personally, I knew car leather was coated, but I didn't know how to tell the difference. By the way, I had never asked myself whether the leather of shoes or any piece of garment was coated or not; now I know it can be either. And, as this wasn't long enough, I wanted to ask you, Darren, whether you now ceramic leather coating can help prevent the wear of seats and steering wheel, which when cleaned do recover that factory mate finish, but then get all greasy and shiny in no time after the cleaning.

I learned all this stuff from you years ago on prior videos, good to put out as new content in a different format for newer viewers. I'd like to learn more about your processes for cleaning alcantera in a vehicle. I'm not buying crazy cleaners, normally I use a highly diluted apc (20:1) spray into a MF towel and focus on any stains. Then a light mist over the entire area and wipe again to clean the entire area without being too aggressive.

I can distill it into a short few sentences if anyones thinking the same thing. If waterdrops soak in, it’s uncoated, if it doesn’t soak in, it’s coated. If it only soaks in near creases, it was coated and the coating is worn off in that area.

Well as an owner of one of those older Lexus vehicles with leather seats, I care. Otherwise I agree 100% with your observations. Darren has a wealth of experience and information but he has yet to figure out how best to convey it.

great info thankyou...i have a question regarding chemicals that say "do not use on leather" for example the original krud cutter, can they be used on coated leather?

Warm soapy water on a soft sponge or cloth is all you need, them dry fog with another soft dry cloth, nothing more needed

Coated leather? Why don't we just go back to vinyl or leatherette and save a lot of money? I have a 2015 Chrysler 300C, an expensive car, and to me the so-called leather seats look like and behave like vinyl or faux leather.

That’s because it isn’t an expensive car, it’s a chromed up mainstream American sedan from the makers of plastiwood and pleather, so yes you’re basically sitting on vinyl. It ain’t a six figure Porsche, BMW 7 Series, Mercedes S Class, Audi A8 or Lexus LS to have actually high end aniline leather seats.

Mitzu i am a detailer and what you are saying is wrong. If you get a natural leather jacket and wet it, it will change colour until it dries. You can't do that on modern day car leather because they are coated. If they were not then if you drop a drop of water on it it will change colour to darker.

Please read my post, it dosent say no coating it says no clear coating. I have been making automotive trim for over 40 years and have never seen noe heard of CLEAR COATING!!!@@g.osiris1615

The problem here for you is that I am the trim engineer here in Detroit that works for the seat suppliers. I am the one who specs out the materials for the seat trim leather components! So carry on with your misinformation if you like. We are done here. @James O'Brien
