Genuine leather can be a confusing and frustrating term in leather working and leather products. In my leather 101 video i briefly covered the topic but didn't cover it in depth enough so this video is 100% devoted to answering the question, "What is Genuine Leather". I also threw in 5 tips on how to avoid buying bad genuine leather.

You gotta ask if it's 100% leather, not if it's a 100% genuine leather . Fully leather question might receive a weasle answer . Honey can also be blended and still sold say as genuine Manuka honey when the Manuka honey portion is say 20% . Actually there's a honey coincidentally called leatherwood honey which these days is always blended and sold as genuine leatherwood. Very expensive.

@@RoseAnvil I applaud your sentiments about supporting local artisans and makers simply on the basis of honesty and transparency. Big companies with accountants and shareholders to return value for easily cut corners, reducing an item down to a profitable level and not up to a standard. I wear both DMs and Solovairs, as does my wife. DM now being a corporate entity, passed around and sold like a money generating machine, cannot be expected to produce products at the standard they were in the 80s/70s. It just cannot work in their corporate state. Their quality is everything I expected it to be.

The leather that Red Wing produces, which is good quality full-grain leather, is also stamped "genuine leather." But Red Wing is very transparent about what the leather is. If a company doesn't tell you anything about the leather, other than to say that it is leather, that's when you need to be wary.

Thanks. Your leather quality lessons gave me a lot more confidence when I went to buy a couch. I could easily tell the quality of the "leather" couches they were selling. Then I found a full grain Italian leather couch that I really liked and felt good about buying it. I looked up the maker (Soft Line) and found that they specialize in Italian leather goods, too. It has a soft, but not quite suede surface, which I'm not sure how they did, but it's clearly quality material.

im a leather connoisseur and a vegan. the main thing that has the biggest impact on the environment and animals is eating animals daily or at all. i believe that having small but meaningful leather items (shoes, belts, wallets, etc..) isn’t exactly ethical but serves a purpose because of its superior durability and patina over time. Leather is also biodegradable unlike synthetic leather. faux leather is horrible for the environment and in turn, the animals suffer from the pollution. you dont have to be extreme as a vegan, just be ethical and mindful of the amount of animals you kill to sustain yourself.

It's almost sad that some leather goods producers, who use full grain leather simply state on their product and website that the product is genuine leather. In the last month, I contacted two of them who came back to me with a reply stating that it is indeed full-grain leather. - both were small businesses in North America. They don't even seem to know the significance of stating that a product is full-grain leather.

Very, very valuable information for the every-day consumer. I had forgotten about some of these facts, and I thank you for the reminder! Excellent; I like your standards, I like your work that you do. Keep up the great work! Producers of inexpensive leather goods use "genuine" much like food producers use the term "natural flavors" in the ingredients listing. One looks at these words and says "oh, I like genuine... I like natural..." and if they only knew what contortions the producer had to go through to be able to say those positive words to describe their product.

Is it better for dead horses to just rot away? No horses are slaughtered just for the purpose of making shell cordovan. It is a byproduct, so that when you have to put a horse down, it's not a total waste. Same thing with eating the horse meat. Every year, horses have to be killed. It's just a fact of life, and it's never going to change. Making cordovan from the horse's shell, and horsehide leather from the rest of the hide, goes a little way towards making the horse's death not be in vain.

In México the companies put the material of the belt or "leather" product. I dont remember quite well but its by law cause México has a big leather market. Once i was looking for a Genuine leather belt and most of the belts i saw were, bonded, synth, regenerated and took me a while to find a real leather one ( i knew which belt was leather AND which ones not because of the mark in the belt that says if its synth or Genuine). Not even Levis uses real leather anymore

I have a belt from J. Crew with what I can tell is very high quality full grain leather, it even had "vegetable-tanned" in the product description, but it only says "Genuine Leather" on the belt itself, so the broadness of the term can still apply to good products it seems. Though I agree, more often than not its usually only on inferior leathers

Please do a timberland Euro hiker tear down - brown waxed leather version. I have always worn them as leather quality feels great! Though soles wear out too quick, your channel really informative btw

as manufacturer of leather sofa, i prefer the term Top Grain leather (TG) and Split leather (SP) to differentiate types of genuine leather. even with Top grain leather there are 3 common types in the leather sofa market like Aniline (least surface treatment means most close to natural grain), Semi-aniline, and pigmented leather (heavily treated with powder coated and grain embossment).

This video might not perform well, but I appreciate you making it for us uninformed shoppers. When I get around to buying a full grain leather belt, I'll pay you back for the analytics hit
