That white shift knob appears to have lowered the length a little?

I didn't measure it but I'd say you're right. Maybe .5"-1"? The knob shape and camera angle might make it seem exaggerated though.

Shift slop doesn't exactly bother me but it just feels better, more precise, and a bit more "notchy" when the slop is gone.

If you haven't driven a tight gear box you wouldn't understand. Or just cruising around and driving regularly it wouldn't be noticed as much as ripping

They are Subaru OEM all season mats. Subimods has them, subaru part number J501SVC000

I don't have an issue getting into first gear while stopped or at very slow speed. It doesn't seem to improve the anomaly of hard getting into first gear at higher speed. This for me seem to almost be a safety feature (to keep from overrevving). It maybe reduces the crunchy/gravel feel going into second slightly but I also added a much heavier knob which I think also helped reduced this (more momentum). The lateral (left-right) tightness definitely improved substantially. Still...it's no Civic Type R shifter...
