So you place any game disc into the ps3, load Cobra and select an .iso from the hard drive, it works its magic and tells you to either restart or eject. You eject, it goes back to the ps3 home screen, then you load the disc again and the game displayed for selection will be the one selected from Cobra? So the game disc that's in the console is just a dummy disc?

Yes, you need one original game disc that is in the drive, but it can be (almost) any game disc. The cobra just need to redirect some disc related calls to the disc drive, but the game you want to play is read from the USB connected hard drive.
