It is really a damn shame Toei did not just keep adapting manga cover story arcs like this. Would have worked great as canon filler to work with instead of much of the stuff they threw at us otherwise. I do think it is well worth looking up the manga cover stories if nothing else, as many gives us epilogues to certain characters and settings from past stories and some become quite relevant to main story as it goes.

I love these two coby episodes, these episodes are animated versions of the one piece "cover stories". A cover story is a single page image on the cover of a chapter. And each cover story can take up multiple chapters to finish in the manga. Unfortunately, most of the cover stories will not get animated, which really sucks, because the cover stories show what happens with other side characters, and some of the stories circle back into the actual story. And sometimes you'll see a character show up in a random place that doesn't make sense in the anime, but that's because they didn't animate the cover story. There are a few cover stories for characters you have already seen that you won't know about until you go read the cover stories.

Something to note about the live action if you decide to watch it: it mostly sticks to the East Blue Saga but there's a major change, which is that they gave Garp a pretty significant role. Including some events and reveals that don't happen until much later in the anime, like ep 310-325 or so. So if you would consider that a spoiler and want to see it in anime first you'd have to avoid the LA until that point.

Coby and Helmeppo rising up there always hits. They can't let themselves be left in the weakest seas and face the Pirate King at the end of all this. Fun Fact: Little Buggy & "Cobymeppo" were the manga's first two Cover Stories. Every now and then Oda spends a few weeks using the cover page towards telling a story about people we've left behind, and after the ratings of these episodes w/o the SHs, they completely stopped putting them in the anime (unless the character reappears and needs to speed through it). Real Fact: Marines may be the dogs of the military but all you gotta know is that Garp had that D A W G in him. The four marines in here got to be more relevant in the live action, so if you two want to make a detour go for it. There's a big Garp spoiler but it's like the first thing you find out when he gets his first major appearance with the main cast later on.

The first time we see Coby he is under the tyrannical rule Alvida. He’s just a lowly chore boy who cleans bird shit and is forced to compliments Alvida and cater to her every whim. So this already meek and weak willed individual is now even weaker mentally because of her abuse. Look at her as the embodiment of Coby’s self esteem and mentality. Then we have Helmeppo… A boy who has had everything handed to him who lives under a tyrannical father who has never shown him love and affection. He is also meek and weak willed mentally. These two have started mentally from the absolute bottom. You can’t get any lower. Then they join the navy. And then with an act of courage and idealism by facing their fears, they get pushed in to something a little better. Like the path has been opened for their dreams. Think of it as a little shove from the universe saying “alright, you asked for it, you showed us a bit, let’s see how you handle this” They get to where the REAL shit is going down. 1000 push ups, rope crawls, fights with kendo sticks, and they are shook. It’s like “okay, here’s what you all wanted. Now this is what it takes. You are no where near this level. But you’re here. Do you still want it” And while they’re sleeping Helmeppo makes the decision. Emphasis on decision. He wants his old lifestyle back but he knows what it’s going to take to get it. Coby wants to become a marine admiral and he knows what it takes. So, by any means necessary, after a hard days work, they train. And not half hearted. They train fucking hard. They have made a decision and they will get it at any cost. And that is the key to success to anything in life. So let’s say KZbin. Well sure you can make videos and edit. But have you studied the algorithm? When do people who are successful in their lane post? Do they do any marketing? What do their thumbnails look like? Why does Mr. Beast use the colors and font he chooses on this thumbnail? What is his audience and how does he cater to that audience? The little things matter. The consistency matters. The attitude of gratitude matters. See what you want, make a decision, and get to fucking work and the universe and god will open so many doors for you that you never thought possible.
