The story is, that Pixar went to Mattel at the time and asked for permission to use Barbie in the show, and Mattel wasn't interested, so Bo-Peep got the role, AND some suspiciously iconic legs were used disturbingly in later scenes. Woody, Buzz, and later Jesse and Bullseye went on to staggering commercial success in toy stores, and so Mattel came back to Pixar begging to be in the third movie. Ironically Mattel did not learn from the success of Hasbro in their Transformers franchise which was on afterschool cartoons for years driving up their sales.

The thing about Pixar though, unlike Disney and Dreamworks, was that while the others wrote "one for us, one for them" jokes, Pixar wrote better - jokes that worked on both levels at the *same* time. When a little kid hears Buzz breathing inside his helmet they get it and it's funny But for older kids and adults it works that way *and* because the scuba regulator sound is Darth Vader's breathing. Same with the action/Buzz in danger with the tacks and the globe of the world. To kids it works because the household stuff is overscaled danger while being regular real world stuff, but not to a toy. To us it's the Raiders of the Lost Ark poison darts and deadly boulder as well! Such great stuff.***

Disney bought Pixar Studios in 2006 (I think). Pixar was an independent studio for 10+ years and did a great job of creating iconic hit movies using computer animation that just didn’t exist at the time. The first Pixar anything that I saw was a short in theaters featuring a desktop lamp and a ball. I have no idea which feature I saw that night. All we could talk about was the Pixar short. The lamp is now the “mascot” seen in the opening credits of every Pixar film. Toy Story was the movie event of the year. They still make great movies with incredible stories. But the jaw dropping animation was a revelation 30 years ago…

His character, "Tim", hosted a TV show called "Tool Time", where he and his partner, "Al", demonstrated how to fix things in your home and also make improvements. And the show's main sponsor was "Binford Tools", which is the name you see on the tool box, in Sid's room. Disney bought ABC in 1995, so they were able to that Easter egg in the movie. Also, remember the name of the gas station, "Dinoco", for when you react to "Cars".* *Let's give Coby all the basic Pixar movie Easter Eggs to look for, moving fwd from "Cars". The ones I can think of are:* *-The blue & yellow ball with the red star* *-The number "A-113"/"A113" - Easter egg in media developed by alumni of California Institute of the Arts, referring to the classroom used by graphic design and character animation students.* *-The "Pizza Planet" delivery pickup truck.* *-John Ratzenberger - The voice of "Hamm", the piggy bank. Pixar considers him good luck, so he voices in all Pixar movies. He was also Cliff Clavin, the know-it-all Mailman in the sitcom, "Cheers" (1982-1993), and was in The Empire Strikes Back as Major Bren Derlin* *-Then there are the movie overlaps, and cameos. Back in 1995, computer animation was new. There wasn't "subsurface scattering" yet, which is what makes human skin so lifelike, some light goes through the top layers and bounces back out from lower layers of skin. We also didn't have the processing power to do hair or fur yet, there wasn't the physics simulations to do cloth either. So doing a movie about plastic toys was absolutely perfect genius to fit into the technological constraints of the time. It helped that the Pixar team has some good writers, storytellers, and were given the time to make the movies as good as they were. If you go back and look at the effort involved in this, there were very few "locations" that they needed to build, and the ones they did build were all relatively small scale. This was a thing mentioned in later Pixar commentaries in like The Incredibles, where they needed almost every scene to be in a new location, with new, models, paint, new lighting, the works and very little was reused from one scene to the next. So as an outing Toy Story was inexpensive, innovative, effective, and played to the strengths of everything Pixar had at the time. Absolutely brilliant.

I remember when I went with my family to see the original Toy Story in theaters in 1995. Of course, back then I had no idea that what I was watching was considered groundbreaking and a milestone in the history of animated film. I was just focused on the story. The concept of toys coming alive when their owners weren't present was certainly new to a five-year-old, and very intriguing. Add in the twist of a cool new toy coming to life and believing that he wasn't really a toy but an actual space ranger, and well, I was hooked. I found Buzz Lightyear's character to be cool, but very frustrating. I constantly wanted to shout "You're a toy!" at the screen and my parents had to keep shushing me. I was very much on Woody's side of things. It wasn't until we arrived at the scene where Buzz sees the toy commercial of himself that I started to feel differently about him. I suddenly understood then that realization of the truth would devastate him and I really didn't want that to happen. So, when he climbed up to the top of the stair railing and tried to fly out the window, I really rooted for him to make it. "To infinity and beyond!" suddenly turned from being a cool catchphrase into an emotional character line filled with hope and defiance in the face of a hard reality. In that moment of slow motion in the air, I really thought that maybe, just maybe, it could really happen. That he could actually fly and was going to make it. Then of course, he started to fall, and the truth hit him as hard as the wooden stairs he bounced off of. And the image that moved me the most and has stuck with me ever since was that of Buzz on his back with his left arm knocked out of its socket. He felt no physical pain, but that climatic moment of existential comprehension that crossed his face, and the mental anguish he felt right after made me almost cry for him. It's funny, even though he doesn't say anything, the look on his face registered so powerfully that I literally have a memory of him admitting out loud, "I am a toy." I'm fairly certain that was the first time I had ever felt such a reversal of emotions for a character. I was rooting for both him and Woody to make it back to Andy for the rest of the film instead of just Woody. The message for the adults (I believe) is that when you grow older, there comes a point where you realize you aren't actually that special compared to everyone else. Everything you do works as part of a cog in society. But there's still hope, because you can find happiness where you are, and with those around you. Buzz found out that being a toy isn't so bad, just as being a person isn't so bad either. He got to fly in the end after all.

In the original storyboards for when the mutant toys scare Sid, those soilders were meant to come up out of the ground (hence Woody's line "Great guys! COming out of the dirt like that was a great idea!") but back then it was too hard or outright impossible to make things come out of the earth in a believable/realstic way so they came up from the muddy water instead. Also, originally Woody was gonna come to life much earlier in front of Sid but John Lasseter and co thought it'd be better with Woody use his voice box to creep up and scare Sid and save coming to life in front of him for last (which is a better choice, maxing the "creepyness"). Also Hannah was just look deadpanned at Sid's behavior at the end like she thought "Oh brother!" but it's better with her getting back at her big brother for all the times he was being mean to her.

Fun fact: in the original script for this film, Woody was the villain, who ruled over Andy's room with an iron fist, and knocking Buzz out the window was 100% intentional. But producers hated how the story was turning out, so they ordered a rewrite.

Toy Story is great, Toy Story 2 is awesome and Toy Story 3 is a masterpiece. BTW you've become my favorite reactor. I love seeing you become so invested and have such genuine reactions to these movies. Have a great day!
