My Cocktail Canela sings a whole bunch! He has even learned to say “what are you doing” and is currently working on saying “pretty bird” and some other phrase. He also does bite quite bit and of course gets more hissy at night. He most certainly loves cuddling as well, and he likes being naughty and destructive on the table while we are trying to do things

Hey Coro! I love your videos and I appreciate the honest takes on parrot ownership. I have rescued and kept birds for much of my life and I've seen some of the effects of poorly informed parrot owners, so it's great to see that resources are emerging to properly inform people. That being said, appreciated this take on cockatiels! Something I've found (as with all parrots), is that cockatiels give what they get, and they are actually super cuddly when they are given plenty of attention and family-time! They're just a different brand of cuddly if that makes sense? You can't hand-wrestle cockatiels or cradle them like caiques and cockatoos, but they seem to appreciate long scritching sessions and being held against the chest, and also cheek massages seem to be a universal favorite. My most affectionate and emotionally needy bird was actually a pied cockatiel named Bindee! Good luck on your quest to inform the masses on all existing parrots!

Also for the quietness factor, two more reasons are 1) cockatiels will chirp in the morning & in the evening, everyday, as well as 2) loving to talk whenever you (their beloved human) is talking. One of my clients' favourite things was hearing my bird fly to my shoulder (hear the flap, flap, flap) and start chirping -only- when I was talking in audio calls. When I stopped talking, so did my bird. It was hilarious! I had two different cockatiels, at two different times in my life, which both loved to do this exact behaviour. (I'm not saying they all do, just saying that you may as well expect your bird to chirp/talk simultaneously when you do.) 😉 Love all cockatiels!!! ❤❤❤

I've had cockatiels before any variant came into being. The lutino yellow was the first. About 50 some years ago. My cockatiel here in Israel imitates me drinking hot tea. Over and over. Anytime he sees a cup or glass.

"Cockatiels are like a cat" sums it up perfectly I think. One moment they will come to you and let you scritch them and love them all up, and the next moment they are like *HISS* LEAVE ME ALONE and want nothing to do with you. LOL. Their flock calls can get really out of hand, too!

Our cockatiel is over 25 years old, and has been a super clever talker, and mimic, as well as knowing when to use his words and sound effects, and what the rules of the house are - and he will growl like me or scream for me to come, if the dogs are misbehaving. As the years go by, he gets more and more affectionate and trusting. He had a bad accident two years ago, when a door he was sitting on, slammed shut, and tore off his lower beak. Amazingly, he has recovered well, living off wet parrot food that I mix up, and getting used to me trimming his upper beak as it grows, and preening and washing him, which he can't do for himself any more. He is like a toddler in many ways, intelligent, charming, with his own personality, and is part of our family.

My cockatiel was a tiny cockatoo. He could be sweet and loving but anything could set him off. He wasn’t as noisy as my Caiques. He had a pretty chirp and whistled songs. I was his second owner and only had him 8 years before he passed. I never knew his age. Great review.☺️🙏

My first bird was a cockatiel! He was a rather loud *and* noisy guy, but I think he was stressed all the time because of some things that happened in the household around the time I had him. Unfortunately I had to rehome him but he went to a friend who took excellent care of him. I actually just recently reconnected with that friend and found out how his life had been! I've thought about getting another cockatiel more than a few times. I really liked having one! Maybe a female this time... :D

Kitty is my life. I’ve had her for about eight years now and we’ve been through so much together. She lost her mate in October of 2019- so we decided to get another ‘tiel. *sigh* Then, there’s Scout. Scout is the epitome of a high school cheerleader captain/diva with an amazing dress. She’s absolutely beautiful (three mutations in one!), but to date one of the angriest, unfriendly birds I’ve ever worked with- which is absolutely unusual. We got her as a baby from PETCO, the same place we got Kitty, and she was great for the first two months and then just decided fire and brimstone was her personality. I hope she’ll grow out of it!

My boy is a singer, he loves to beep and trill at me, he loves to climb and loves "chin hugs", just sleeping under my chin. He loves loads of fruit and vegies. It's also worth noting that males can be a lot more vocal than females. In terms of general flocking calls and chatter.
@TraceurDoc1

I’ve been a dad to 4 cockatiels over the last 30 years. I can say from experience that tiel behavior can vary based on personality(no 2 are the same). The kitten” like tendencies are not universal. Also, the males tend to be territorial, and the females more lap-dog like and docile.
@Fivesaflock
@Fivesaflock 3 жыл бұрын
That's true with any parrot. I've seen Eclectus who act like Macaws and Macaws that act like Pionus. Individual traits definitely trumps general traits. But these reviews are really moreso a starting place to get a general idea of where the personality lottery tends to land.

@Sylvelourie
@Sylvelourie 4 жыл бұрын
I really understand how you feel. I agonized over it a long time myself when I decided I was ready for another pet (after 17 years without one!). But trust me, the more research you can do, the better... and always be ready to handle the worst out of the species you pick, because each bird is an individual with their own personality. I decided on Bourke's parrots and they are definitely perfect for me, but are certainly not for everyone especially someone who wants a bird that is super friendly and social and loves to be touched, or a bird that talks, and it seems like most people want those things out of a bird. (Surprisingly, though, one of my Bourkes does talk rather well, despite it being extremely rare!) Just be sure you know exactly what you want out of a bird and what you are sure you can handle every day for however long that bird could live. I'm sure you recognize how serious the commitment is!

I do have a male cockatiel and mine is pretty vocal. He whistles the "Adam's Family" song, "If you are happy and you know it", "La cucaracha", and he said words like "Pikabu", "Bebe Agua" which means Drink some water in Spanish, "Tu eres de Papa" which means You belongs to daddy in Spanish... He's very smart, and loves to be always with me. I've heard that male cockatiels are more likely to whistle and talk than the females. That's why I has to write this because in my case, I'll give a 3 1/2 points on how talkative my male cockatiel is...😁👍🏾 Thumbs-up for your video! Have a great rest of your night! Greetings from Douglas, Arizona 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾🌵🦠😷🇵🇷

I used to have 2 Cockatiels known as Zoey, who was all white, very social, and 100% tame. Tink, who was not really too tame and a crazy screamer, and he was a mix of yellow, gray, some white, and of course those cute orange cheeks. Sadly around 5 - 6 years ago, tink died, and we had to get rid of Zoey not long after. Then around a year ago, I ended up getting Daisy, who is a mix of yellow, white, and the orange cheeks, however she is not tame at all and hisses a lot. However, she doesn’t really bite too much, and its more of a nibble. Same thing goes for the 2nd cockatiel, who is known as Jacob. He is a mix of gray, white, and some dark yellow on the top, with dark orange cheeks as most cockatiels have. He is sort of tame, however sometimes does hiss at me (a cockatiel is often scared when they hiss.) However, that doesn’t really matter to me, because their also extremely cute, and both Daisy and Jacob are still with me to this day!

Male cockatiels _do_ talk. Yeah, not the clearest, but they will "here kitty kitty kitty" pretty clearly. And they will definitely mimic whistles. They sing. ... unlike an African Gray or something, the males are _much_ more mimicy than the females. Definitely not a super loud parrot, but they often get excited in the morning and start going through their vocalization repertoire. Once they trust you, they are really very sweet little parrots. They love head scritchins

Our cockatiel liked her seeds and veggies ok, but by far her favorite food by far was cheese. No one could have anything cheesy in our house without her demanding some. She was normally quite sweet, but if you tried to take cheese away she would get aggressive. I think my sister overindulging her love of string cheese contributed to her death just a couple months after she started laying eggs.

You can tell this is an "older" video. The other day I was at Pet Smart in SW Michigan, and they had a wild-type cockatiel for $299.99! I had a cockatiel a very long time ago - got it for about $40. Poor thing, I had it out of the cage when the cat was outside - didn't realize the cat knew how to open the door. Scared the poor bird into the running ceiling fan.

Mine are super cuddly for the most part but yes describing them as cats is perfect. 😂 my girl looks a lot like yours! Sharlett is more cuddly than Data is (he's a white faced pied) and he is more of a little shit lol they are some of the best birds you can ever have as a pet. I highly recommend cockatiels to anyone who's done their homework because they can be your lifelong companions and they're super sweet. One thing to note though is if they have an accident they can get stress-induced seizures as Data recently showed us. He accidentally flew into the door and the poor little guy get stress-induced seizures at the vet now. They are also better talkers than most people say and can learn a variety of phrases and songs. Cockatiels are like potato chips you can't just have one and I plan on someday rescuing a few more. However female cockatiels can be prone to being chronic egg layers which can lead to egg binding. Sadly Sharlett is a chronic egg layer but we are working on that and she didn't lay all last year! Edit: also Data seems to think that taunting the dogs is a good thing. So they can almost have little dog syndrome LOL. And they can have some really weird fears as my bird is scared of Tim Curry. He is not allowed to be around the dogs nor is his sister but sometimes he flies into a room that they are in and we are trying to get him to stop. Also let it be known that my 45 lb dog is terrified of him.

I find the concept of a beginner parrot quite weird. Even a budgie lasts about twelve years, no nagger what the bird, it’s always going to be a commitment. You’re either prepared to have a relatively high maintenance pet for around twenty years or you’d rather not. After a few years of looking after a bird, you’re not a beginner any more and you either like your parrot or you don’t, but like it or not, you’re stuck with it, so I feel like it makes far more sense to learn by looking after a friend’s bird or by volunteering? Just my thoughts

Sounds like you got ripped off 😭 My local store sells them around 60 and local bird shows I bought one for as low as 20. On amazon you can find them around 40-50.

Had one of these. Never again. A meaner more pointlessly noisy creature I have never known and every other cockatiel I've ever met is the exact same breed of bad-tempered hair-brain with an obsession with screaming its head off. Eventually the one my family had was passed along to a shelter for birds because we just couldn't take it anymore. Tried for years to get it to chill out. Nothing ever worked.

A bottom feeder, a flighty bird on, and on... Cockatiels are very cuddly, intelligent and loyal birds. Do you own a cockatiel? It seems as if you don't know much about the birds I've had for over 35 years. Cockatiels tend to get a bad rap. Cockatiels want - more - than 1 hour of attention a day. Cockatiels are very hardy Scoring is a horrible way to talk about birds. I won't subscribe to this Channel.
