You can train your bird against separation anxiety, if you reassure them that you're coming back whenever you leave their sight. You can repeat a sentence before you leave them (exemple: I'm going to come back!) and after you return (see? I came back!). In time, they will learn that, if you say that before you leave their sight, they didn't lose you forever, and will become more calm.

That is what mine would do! But, I sadly lost both of my cockatiels almost a year ago, a year apart.😥 One got sick (I don't know how and the vet didn't help much). He was shaking and I didn't know what was wrong. I brought him to the vet the next morning but they weren't much help. After a week of being sick and being on a weak medication and (the vet said to have them separated from each other so if it was contagious the other won't get it) it wasn't doing anything. But, a little late on that! Later that week, I noticed the other was acting sick, too. She was shaking, as if they were shivering (the same as the other was). Then the next day, the one that had been sick the longest had died in the middle of the night. So, that then caused depression for the other and made her freak and not want any contact! About two months later the other died😭😩 The first one was always an alarm clock and would sing with the music I played, the second would barely talk... until she had the cage to herself.

I've only ever had budgies, and I can probably see myself sticking with them for life (tiny, full of personality, a good mix between chill and energetic, pleasant voices, not nearly as demanding as a cockatiel, on the odd occasion they bite it feels like a light pinch, they bond to people really well, but are really easy to socialise even later in life, easy to entertain... the list goes on) but I'd love to try a bigger bird some time, when I can afford one. I personally have a love/hate relationship with every cockatiel I've ever met, as you said, they're super demanding little buggers haha, very very self-centred. I think I need to meet a few conures, see what I think, because you were describing a similar personality (yes, as you said, individuals vary, but still). Parrots are high-energy as a rule, even a low-energy parrot like a tiel is still more than most non-bird people expect, so a high-energy parrot like a conure would be a very different experience by the sound of things! (budgies are high energy, but only in short bursts, they chill for half the day then go on naughty rampages in the morning and evening). It was really really helpful to hear you describe their personalities! I'll keep doing research over the next few years, and who knows, maybe one day I'll pick up a conure ;) Or maybe I'll just stick with budgies haha

My first bird at the age of 9 was a Cockatiel, and they are among my fave species and get my vote, absolutely. I have a theory, and would love to see what others think of it's veracity: It seems like to me that those who have a preference for Macaws over Cockatoos also may favor Conures over Cockatiels. Our flock includes at least one of each, so I'll admit that my personal feelings about the relative similarity among the personalities of conures and macaws, and 'toos and 'tiels respectively, are such that many conure lovers also prefer macaws. Of course, I haven't done serious study, but in talking with other bird people, it seems there may be something to it. (disclaimer: My daughter's got a female GCC, my son has a female 'tiel & a female blue throated macaw. I have cockatoos- a male Goffin's and a female umbrella.) Anyone agree? Disagree?

Great job with this video. I have fostered/rescued birds for years, and agree with 95% of your characterization. Conures are wonderful birds, but they are social and do require a lot of attention. They are also quite good at their job of chewing things up, so give them lots of toys, and expect wood furniture and cabinets to be mistaken for chew toys as well. Green Cheeks are relatively quiet while Sun Conures are very loud. The one place I would differ a bit is that not all conures are the same. Green Cheeks are rambunctious, Sun Conures tend to be more varied - my two are older (one is 10+, the other 20+ years old) and they are mostly chill, though again they love to chew on things, so if you don’t give them something to chew on while they are on your shoulder or arm, expect them to make use of your clothing as chew toys, happily shredding shirts, jeans etc to pieces. Great social birds for those with the time to give them lots of love and time.

I got my half moon conure (16 years) as a rescue so she was very insecure and fearful. I have only had her 6 months and she has truly settled but she developed an extreme bond with me. She is very quiet as long as I’m near her but if I leave the room she calls loudly. I think over time she will be less clinging. She is a joy, wonderful personality.

I've been lucky to have a pineapple conure who doesn't scream (i've only heard her do it twice, otherwise she does her flock call) and who isn't constantly chewing everything in sight! She mostly prefers to sit on my knee or arm while I'm writing and take a nap or get cuddles. Pikachu is very sweet!

Our Green cheek picked my wife, he loooooves her. He likes me ok, too, but I'm the one that gets the bites, and he bites HARD. I'm a dude, I have rough skin and rough hands, but he breaks that skin no problem and draws blood. Your video is great, and people really aught to do their homework before making such a big decision. Our guy will be with us for 25 years or longer, if we're lucky, so it's a big commitment. It's important to know what one is getting into. I do love our conure, and I certainly love my wife - he makes her SUPER happy. He was my idea!

Very well informed video! I got an conure half a year ago, and have a cocktiel and an african gray from before. The conure I got was just a baby, and she is mischivious and rebellious, but she is also sweet, social and cuddly too. Tried to have her outsode with the two other birds, but saw quickly that the african Gray and the conure do not go too well with each other as my african gray hates it when other birds flies over him. One day the conure was too quick and she was about to perch on the gray. The gray was flying away to get away, byt the conure was flying after him. Got them seperated quickly though so no harms done. The relationship between the cocktiel and the conure is on an off. They are not allowed togehter withoyt supervision, but my conure is being playful to my cocktiel. The cocktiel is an senior and she is more about the cuddles than playtime. One time my conure was wanting to play tag with my cocktiel and the senior bird that she is, she is not a good pilot anymore. She ended behind some funitures, she was all fine. But my conure was concerned. Once I got my cocktiel from the crash site, the conure went to the old lady and just stood there and did not do a thing. By what I have experienced, Conures are surely the type of bird that is clowns and likes to be mischivious. But they are also great companions when you are socializing them early on. I got my conure when she was only 2 months old. And i must say, other than the few incidents she is going well with the birds I have from before, and the other birds do accept her aswell. Of cause if anyone wants a conure, just read up on them before getting them. The same goes for the cocktiel. Cocktiels are the sassiest birds I have ever come across. And for African grays they are similar to how conures are like, but they are very loveable and is fairly all-people birds. But even they can connect with only one amd tolorade the rest of the family.

My conure Mango definitely is mischievous. Mine will eat my homework and fly up in my tree in the backyard and doesn’t like to get down. And my conure will get jealous when other birds are even NEAR me

@@ElleAndTheBirds I decided on a cockatiel because 1 I'm in an apartment so quiet is very important 2 I need a family pet, one good with kids and 3 I don't think I have enough time in the day to devote to a conure, and when I do come home I'm ready to relax

@Nope He's doing great! Very friendly and social, even with my 7 year old. Since he was hand fed he already knew how to step up. He loves head scratches and makes crazy weird dinosaur noises that scared me at first but it turns out that's a baby purr lol. He does screech sometimes but overall he's very quiet.

I’ve been thinking about getting a cockatiel, as they seem like an amazing bird choice for me, but my mom has terrible asthma and I really don’t want to risk anything, because of the bird dust but maybe someday. For now I’ll just relax with my budgies :3

need help with my cockatiel I've done research on Budgies for years and I'm learning on Cockatiels now. I'm waiting for everything to be set and ready before I get the bird. Like the cage, once it's fully setup with the right things, once I bird proof my room, once Ive learned everything I need such as food, taming, sickness, moods, and so on. But I'm confused about something. So Budgies (from my knowledge) need about a week or two alone in the cage to understand the surroundings and you. You could rub your finger on the cage and such so they can get used to you. But is that the same with cockatiels? If so, how long do I need to wait until they're okay with their surroundings? What do I do when I first get it? And how soon should I let it out the cage so it can fly freely in my room?
@coool73 Жыл бұрын
Hi!! Sorry to reply to this comment kinda late you’ve probably got the bird now lol, but if not, that’s a myth!! You actually should try and get your bird used to your hands when they first arrive. By this, I mean regularly sitting near the cage and changing their food/water. Yes it feels a bit sad to startle your bird, but they’ll only fly around the cage for the first times you do it, eventually they’ll get used to you entering the cage.If we left them to “get used to their surroundings”, they’ll just adapt to being alone with no disruption, so it’ll be harder to tame them from there. If you start straight away, they wont have time to get used to being alone. As for when u first get the bird, what I did was left my birds carrier and cage open so they could fly about. They freaked out at first, snd were very scared but I made sure to quietly sit on my bed and ignore them so they wouldn’t see me as a threat. Although this is inconvenient for a lot of people since you kinda have to let them go back when they want, you can gently approach the area they’re in if they won’t go to their cage, and they should be a bit scared of you and fly ( hopefully towards the cage ). Hope this helped and you are having/ will have fun with ur birdddd!!
@chomuu42 Жыл бұрын
Honestly, depends on the bird's behavior. My first conure as soon as he was brought home and the nerves calmed down after a few hours, he wanted to do nothing but preen my hair, cuddle, and by the 3rd day, he was already flying to me to be cuddled, but i think i just got lucky with him lol. Obviously, a bird like him won't want to be left alone. But my second conure, she was TERRIFIED. When she first arrived home, she immediately ran under the couch and screamed and bit when someone tried to remove her from underneath there, my lil vampire🥺🥺Would freeze in fear and you could see her heart accelerate if you put your hand anywhere near her. Took about 2 weeks to warm up and step up to fingers without screaming or biting. Was in her cage the whole time because she refused to come out, but her cage was next to our other conure's cage with a seperator in the middle so she at least had some company. Poor baby still struggles but that's because we got her at around 5 months and she wasn't socialized properly at all. With a bird like her, it would be best to take it slow and let them get used to their surroundings by not overwhelming them with too many new things at a time. Learn body language and know how to recognize when a bird is stressed or scared so you know when to back off and leave them be. As for the flying question, at first, my birds didn't fly at all unless spooked. Don't be surprised if this happens, and don't force them to fly by quickly dropping your finger. Instead, do recall training and they'll be a pro in no time. First start with little hops and reward. Do over and over until they start flying to you to be rewarded. Since I started recall training a month ago, now my two birds will literally just do a circle or two around the house and return right back to their cage. Also, now they're able to fly over to their canary friends so there isn't as much screaming for me to drop them off to visit. It's great exercise and not to mention awesome for their mental health, too. Honestly just go at the pace of ur little fella and you'll be just fine.

I have had my conure for 8 years. He used to be increadibly loud at the beginning, but now he is mostly quite. He doesn't even make noice when we leave the room. The only times we hear him is when he is scared ( noices coming from outside) or when it is late morning ( past 11am) and we haven't said hello to him yet. Basically, the loudness can change with age and environment.

Great video! One thing I would add to any intro discussion on a pet species, is how long they live. We need to consider our pets' longevity when thinking about what kind of commitment a pet's care will require. For conures and cockatiels, a well cared for pet will be around for about 20 years! Keep up the great bird content, your videos are really fun!
