@rvidal0001 im not trying to be rude but its other peoples choice if they want a bird or not and if they get one they'll least likely suffer because the bird is most likely in a good place. And plus the person who said this comment said they did a lot of research and your technically (I don't know this for sure but it would for me) making them feel down. If you really want a bird then you have to make sure that you get a good job and if you have collage then you might be able to get permission to keep the bird there as well (i haven't gone to collage yet) And if you cant then you'll probably have to either sell the bird or pass the bird down to a family member. I didn't like this comment when i decided to see what people wrote because the person has their own choice and its their experience having a bird for the first time or not, So you could've just said... "i didn't have a good experience with having a bird because of having to go to collage and work, So it didn't give me much time with the bird or my friends. When i did have time i had to spend time with the bird and miss out on hanging out with my friends and other stuff." But that's just my opinion.

But what about some of the UNCOMMON mistakes? Here's a few: 10 ] Giving her access to Alexa unless the payment system is turned off. It turns out she has expensive tastes. 9 ] Telling her she can stay out until 10 p.m. Once you let them stay out after dark, it always ends up being the next day at best. 8 ] Letting her hear Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" too much. Mine failed to understand the metaphor, and took it up as a crusade. 7 ] Letting the cockatiel listen to music composed by Vic Mizzy. Catchy stuff, sure, but you may tire of hearing it after 5 or 6 years. 6 ] Letting her paint the room. She talked a good game , but now I question her taste. 5 ] Not monitoring her choice of friends. After hanging out with some vampires, she had the metal music going at all hours and got into trouble with the law. 4 ] Taking her to "show and tell" at school. She might tell too much. After what my bird said, my parents got divorced. 3 ] Asking her to prepare dinner. She didn't read the recipe or measure carefully, and once the food was in the bowl, though she stirred it pretty well, she spilled tons on the floor. 2 ] Letting her lead a service at church. Some of those words were definitely NOT in the Bible. 1 ] Signing her up for E-trade. They make it seem so easy on TV, but she lost her nest egg.

Few years old but I just watched it. Well done, you covered most things I know. There are some more things my avian vet has mentioned though. Firstly with seeds. Starchy seeds versus oily seeds. Starchy seeds are much better to give than oily seeds. Some birds are seed junkies by life experience even when young and might find the transition onto pellets, veg and fruit difficult. Some species are more amenable to others and some respond to different methods. My cockatiel just loved eating off of my plate, which was a great way to introduce him to new foods and he really does enjoy it. As of yet he won't touch anything else but seeds in the cage. My avian vet said that my cockatiel is much more at risk than budgies from seed diets, and not so much because they are budgies but because of the food marketed to them. When feeding cockatiels don't feed them cockatiel food as a staple, give them millet or budgie seed, but preferably millet.based. Starchy grass seeds are good, oily sunflower is a death sentence. Only as a treat given by hand one by one and count them, anything more and it is very bad - find a better treat, basically, Mine loves peas. You said about birds flying. and clipping. I've used partial clipping some lift feathers as a temporary method of restraint when introducing a new bird if one of the birds becomes too dominant. If you're going to clip, learn to do it properly. I would never do it as a permanent measure, not render a bird flightless. Never ever ever interfere with their control feathers, and never ever ever ever leave a bird alone in the room, not even briefly. It can be surprising how bonded they are and how quickly they can panic alone if a room even if you're just going to go.... somewhere briefly. My vet had me shift my budgies onto "egg and biscuit" which is really just a powdered pellet mix. I've found that birds are more likely to try pellets if you put them through the blender, no, not the bird. Microwave cook a piece of fruit through the pellet powder with any prescribed supplements and offer that to the birds with their seed,. Yes, I said seed. If you're feeding seed because your bird is a seed junkie it is better for them to eat seed than starve themselves to death, and some will, so don't use withdrawal as a method of inducement. No oily seeds, ever, and ban cockatiel and cockatoo mixes with oily seeds from the house. Last one is a question I hope you will address, Special needs for birds who have been sick and have recovered but have limitations. My cockatiel had a brain injury, possibly a stroke, possibly poisoning from fatty liver late stage. He nearly died, his weight crashed and we saved him. He's amazingly tame, gorgeous and loves us to bits. Sadly he can't fly because his balance is damaged. He can flutter and it is hard work for him because the coordination is no longer there. I will never ever trim him because he needs everything he can get. The thing is his care needs are very special. He is much more dependent, to the point of despondency if he can' see us. I'm just curious as to what you do in these kinds of situations. I'm in Australia and my birds are all native little guys. My avian vet says all of the same things you are saying, except that transitioning small birds without gall bladders can be more risky than it is worth for seed junkies. She says to do it if you can but that it is much better if they are weaned onto it in the beginning, hence the fruit "crumble" and grassy seed only method.

My parents consider my budgies as decorations. When I asked them to let them out for at least an hour or so, they got annoyed and said, and I quote, 'Why do you have to meddle with them so much, they're sitting there and looking so cute, what's you problem? Can't you just admire them from a distance?' Even worse, my parents won't buy them any toys, so I had to make my own DIYs and I'm trying to make a playstand from scratch now. It saddens me how it took me a month just to persuade my mom let them out for 2.5 hours. They even got on my back for spending so much time with them (I barely spend more than 3 hours with them daily) and all they 'need' is food and water everyday. They obviously aren't fit to keep birds.

Hi everyone! I just wanted to say something about keeping your bird in the cage and how long. So, just for some context... for the first 9ish months of my cockatiel’s (her name is Cleo) life she would be out for long periods of time, like 3-4 hours. And when we had to go out and we put the bird back in the cage... Cleo would scream and scream and scream and scream. It would be worse because my mom is a night shift worker, so she sleeps in the day. So while my brother and I were at school, and my mom was sleeping Cleo would be screaming her head off until we came home. So, seeing how stressed out Cleo was when she was in her cage, I had to re-evaluate our situation. I watched some of BirdTricks videos, and listened to their podcast (check it out on Spotify or Apple Podcasts! You can listen for free!) And what they said, is that any time your bird spends our of their cage should be enriching. Meaning, they are foraging for seed in a toy that you hung up for them outside their cage, they are training with you, or just simply cuddling with you. There time out of the cage should be well spent. So, having your bird out of the cage as much as possible might not be the best thing for them. With that being said, there cage should be just as enriching as their time out. Now, people I’m talking they got things to forage for, things to chew and just have things to do. In the bird tricks the podcast they talked about how your bird’s cage should be like their room. A place they go to chill and hangout. It’s there safe place. So... ya That was just a tidbit on the importance of the balance between time in and out of the cage. Oh, also if your wondering this is what a day looks like with Cleo getting time both in and out of the cage. So... she wakes up at approx 7:30 and I take her out of her sleep cage. From that she eats breakfast outside of her cage, we do a little training and she gets some exercise and about an hour later, she’s put back in her cage at like 8:30. From 8:30-12:00 Cleo spends time in her cage. She usually spends her time foraging, preening, eating, taking little naps here and there. At around noon, she gets taken out of her cage, we do a 5 min training session and she spends 12:00-2:00 out of the cage. At around 2:00 I give her a bath and she goes back to her cage to dry. From 2:00-5:00 she spends time in her cage. Then finally At around 5, after she has had dinner she comes out till bed time. Usually we do one more training session, she flys a bit more, and I put her in her carrier and we sit outside for some sun time. (Not really in that specific order) At 7:00... Cleo goes to bed in her sleep cage. Please no hate for this, Cleo used be really stressed out in her cage and now that we’ve adapted this schedule she is a lot more happier.
@BirdNerdSophie4 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree with you on the birds being out of the cage comment! If they are expected to just sit on a stand and be there, or play with boring toys then they are going to exhibit undesirable behaviour! 9 times out of 10 when mine are out, we are doing something fun together! Very occasionally if I get them out when they're sleepy, they will rest quietly but if they are happy to do tat then it's great! :)

Our family bird Snowflake, a cockatiel, was kept in his cage most of his life. My mom got mad when we would let him out. I didn't know all the facts about bird ownership until I got older. I feel bad he only ate seeds and never got to stretch. He had a decentish size cage for years, but when we moved into an apartment she downsized him to a hanging cage. I wish I bothered to look into these things back then but I also knew my family would be reluctant to actually get him the things he really needed. I want to own a bird again someday and do it right. I'm looking into owning a pigeon because I live in an apartment but someday I want to own a cockatiel because I adore them and because I want to give them a good home, unlike the home we provided for Snowflake for so long. Luckily for Snowflake my mom gave him away when I wa 16-17 to a family who already had a bird and who let their bird out of the cage often. Thank you so much for educating people and spreading the word about proper bird care. So many pets bought from pet stores end up abused or neglected.

Half a millet spray daily?? That’s a lot...
@studyschool94004 жыл бұрын
「kirbiuーchen」 no, half a millet for a cockatiel daily IS a lot. It’s dry seed, and it’s only healthy in moderation. It should be had as a treat once every few days. For half a millet every day, the bird may as well be on an all-seed diet. While both Budgies and Cockatiels are granivores, unless these birds are on a strictly fresh diet and meticulously coordinated nutrition plan, and eat no seeds any other time (unless it is sprouted), half a millet is a lot. It contributes to a lot of fat in their diet that the pellets are partially making up for bc they already have seeds in them.

When i was 14 i wanted to have cockatiels as well and my mother immediatly said i should get 2. which i personally think is always the best option when getting a bird is to get 2. sure it will be harder to tame them but when you don't have time for them they have each other.

(I put him in another room when I bring them out) (I only live in a two room villa) I just wish I had a job so I could get money to take care of them better, (I don't get allowance) but I just have to wait a few more years when I turn the valid age to work to take care of them 😔 Believe me I TRIED, but they think they're just like our dog and cat, they don't need much.. (By the way, I got my birds as a surprise so I didn't have time to do a lot of research when we got them and decided to get stuff, the only far I can convince them is a bigger cage but I realized that they still need a bigger cage so I'll just wait till I get enough money to buy my own cage)

My turquoise parrot was completely untamed but I still let him out of the cage. He learned to escape whenever he wanted so now he has free range of the whole room lol. He doesn't like being touched but we have a good understanding lol.

@@Kakjajx try just spending time around the cage, my budgie was bonded to my mom at one point because she was always in the kitchen with him. I would just put my hand against the cage for alittle and keep doing it until they just continue on and ignore your hand. You should have 2 budgies though, super scary for a budgie on its own (and make sure the cage is up against a wall!)

If anyone here is suffering with a biting bird make sure of these steps: 1) Birds always bite for a reason. Find what reason that is by seeing what u do exactly before they bite. If for example they started biting u after u for example grabbed them to get them back into their cage then next time try to lure them in by treats or a phone playing bird sounds near their cage. Be patient! 2) The bird usually doesn’t bite immediately! It will first show u signs like for example backing up or opening their beak to show you that you need to stop! At this point u can either back away or distract them with something for example a treat or toy they like to make them forget that they were even trying to bite u! 3) If you weren’t able to spot signs that show that ur bird is about to bite, and u get bit, make sure to do ONE of these 2 things: 3a) If u have a GOOD bond with ur bird then pull ur hand away gently and do a little scream (not too loud). This is what birds do to other birds when they are for example preening too hard and they want them to stop 3b) If you have a BAD bond with ur bird then DO NOT react! So leave ur hand there and don’t make a sound! 4) Show them that ur hand is something that brings them good so whenever u put ur hand near them and they don’t bite make sure to reward them. BEWARE: DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT give a treat to a bird AFTER they bite or you’re just teaching them that they will get rewarded after they bite which may cause this behavior to be repeated!!! TAKE A SCREENSHOT OF THIS COMMENT, YOU MAY WANNA REFER TO IT! :)

thanks :) my pet who we are best friends is a dove and will only eat wild bird food and does not eat much Grace Amazing she is 6 years old not over weight and raised her from a baby. She does not play with toys. Her cage is big yet tall yet too small so her tail gets shorten so she does not fly. Yet, she does her flapping wings exercise when she is out.

Elle, Thank YOU for your most knowledgeable/educational video - I am about to get only my 2md Bird in 15-20 yrs., I had a Parakeet when I was a young man, and now at 81 I decided at this stage of the game instead of another dog, I'd get the Bird I always wanted, a Cockatiel, but after much research on line and thought, I decided that I think a Cockatiel, for me, might not be the right choice, I'd LOOVE one, but I think they appear to be MUCH more "work" MESSY etc. than my Parakeet was....so, I do believe I'll get myself an English Parakeet, a bit bigger and showier! Keep UP da GREAT Bird Info....appreciate - I signed ON! Michael

This is a really helpful video I had a foster bird for a few months to heal after being attacked, she now has a lovely home with friends and lots of space I'm still in contact with her new owner, I bonded and loved her but didn't have the right circumstances to keep her she lived on my shoulder and would follow me everywhere, now I am in the right position to give a good home to some birds and I am looking up every bit of information to care for them fully so this video is so good to watch and help me prepare properly so thank you 😊

@@juliusroman8616 yes they have lots of toys and foraging all throughout the bird room. Yes they love showering but ofc they aren’t always under the water and have the option of in the shower or next to the water, if I do say so they have a pretty good time and are rarely bored x

First time I let my budgie out he nearly brained himself on the window. Second time he clung to my shoulder and refused to leave for two hours. Third time he explored the room and returned to the cage when he was ready. This was all in the span of a weekend. I'd found him outside a month before and his previous owner clearly didn't let him out of his cage before whatever caused him to get lost, because his flight muscles were very weak and he could barely sustain or coordinate flight. He had to learn - and he did. The first two weeks he was with me he barely made a peep; nowadays I have to take him to the balcony when I have Zoom meetings. The first few months he didn't know what to do with a toy, and was even afraid of some, but nowadays I go through three paper bags a month to make him preening toys so he'll lay off my curtains. Right after I tamed him he'd hide in my hair if he so much as heard someone in the other room, now I can get him to step up to new people on the second or third try. It really comes to show how important it is to give your birds space to learn and experiment, and treating them with respect instead of assuming they're unchanging static objects. I tamed Cori in under a month with no previous experience, just because I put in the work instead of assuming That's Just How Birds Are and just having him caged for the rest of his life, but also respected his boundaries instead of trying to force him to be what *I* wanted him to be. Bottom line is: don't underestimate birds. Even the small ones are far more intelligent and full of personality that you could ever guess - you just have to build enough trust that they'll let it shine through.They're not dogs. They won't instantly trust you and be full of flamboyant antics and cuddly devotion. You have to prove to them that they're safe with you and can be themselves instead of focusing solely on surviving.

I got enzyme-based cleaning wipes called Nature's Miracle on Amazon, they're fantastic, totally plant-based, no offensive odors, and the enzymes break down poo and urates (the white stuff) like magic, and they're like $3 for a package of 30 wipes, and one wipe goes a long way! The wipes also have little bumps to help scrub!
