thedailycockati... Full speed and then slow-motion video of our two cockatiels flying in our lounge. They're very good at flying indoors, and never crash into anything. I'm amazed they don't hit each other though, as they fly very fast and close to each other! I filmed this using my GoPro as it can do 60fps, enabling me to slow the video down without it getting too jerky. peplers.blogspo...

It wasn't like that the first time! But they're well practised now, and can do high speed acrobatics without hitting stuff.

What we've done is put net curtains over all the windows, and also across two doorways. 99% of the time the birds can clearly see these and so won't ever fly into the window. Once or twice they've hit them, but they are soft so there's no injury. Once or twice they've clipped a wall, usually when they've been squabbling and take to the air to fight it out, but nothing serious. I think it's worth it to enable them to fly as they were meant to.

Watch out for any damage to the regrowing 'blood feathers' - any broken and bleeding feather needs treating quickly. Apparently it's a risk when growing back from clipped. Should be fine though, just keep an eye on him. He'll love flying for you soon! Oh, and he'll be fast, as he'll build up muscles while he doesn't have a full set of feathers.

It happens because if one takes off suddenly the other assumes there must be some danger, so takes off as well. I've often wondered how many cockatiels you could have flying in a room before they'd crash into each other! 🙂

+Daily Drone FPV ha! They are natural masters of the air! OK, the first time out of the cage each of them kept bumping into the ceiling... But once they got that sorted out, they were definitely master aviators!

Sooo... you didn't train them or anything? When my bird flies she just flies around the room and if she can't find a place to land she hits a wall

+Daniel Kauffman sometimes, after moving house, they would hit walls. It was usually a blank wall in their preferred flight path, so we'd hang a picture on the wall, and they'd stop crashing. We have net curtains over the windows and doorways, to prevent accidents there too. It's good for them to have several places to land too, things they're familiar with perching on, eg their cage, back of a chair, curtain rail, play gym.

I had some cockatiels years ago & I also had a dog called Amber & one day I had the cockatiels out of their cage flying around the living room & one of them landed on Amber's nose & after that she would start whining when I had the cockatiels out of their cage to fly around the living room.

Ours very rarely hit the walls, usually only for the first day after we've moved house! So we learned to put pictures up on any blank bits of wall in their favourite flight paths. but now they know where they're going, they only rarely clip the walls just with the tips of their feathers.

Mike Pepler Hi Mike my cockatiel flies directly in the wall he's just couple of months but I would love to him to be out but I'm afraid he's going to hurt himself badly... What can I in terms of training?
@mikepepler
@mikepepler 10 жыл бұрын
Zharko Karanfilov Ours have sometimes done this after we've moved house, before they learn the new room layout. They usually seemed to fly into walls that were a smooth, uniform colour. We found if we stuck up a poster, photo or picture for a bit, it made the wall more obvious and they learned where it was.

The best thing to do is have their wings at least partially clipped so they can still fly but not very fast. By the time they molt and grow in new feathers, they will have figured out the flight paths.
@mikepepler
@mikepepler 7 жыл бұрын
We tried that with one of ours, and it did slow him down a bit. When his feathers grew back he was faster than ever though! Now we just have net curtains on the windows and doorways, and pictures to break up any big areas of blank wall that might be in a flight path.
@JOHN----DOE

Mine does a similar two-room pattern. Took a month and lots of closed curtains/blinds before we knew she would survive it. They're way too fast for human spaces.
@mikepepler
@mikepepler 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, once they've learned the flight path it's fine. But God forbid you should ever move a piece of furniture. Even standing in the flight path results in near misses! :-)

Mike Pepler Well he doesn’t fly too often only when one of us leaves the room and he can fly a long distance but he’s very slow and clumsy and has ran into a window and our fridge before we also got his wings clipped early on after we first got him so he wouldn’t hit our fan but soon after that we gave up on clipping because he could still fly like before and it’s been a while since then.

My cockatiels fly in my room all the time; they never hit the walls and always comes to hand my when called. A young bird or a clipped bird will sometimes crash against a wall slowly (with no serious injury) as its flight feather/muscles grow; but soon the bird will learn to navigate through the room swiftly with grace :)
@mikepepler
@mikepepler Жыл бұрын
We've had five cockatiels over the years now, no crashing problems. When new flight feathers are growing on a clipped bird, they can be a bit vulnerable to damage, but once they're grown it's fine. Did you decide to let them grow?

How much is too much? They make quite a bit, they have a patch of feathers on their back that continuously grows and disintegrates to produce it for preening.

With difficulty! We lower the top half of their travel cage over them, and they climb in. But not on the first go, there's usually a lot of flying first, then when they get tired they sit still so you can get the cage over them.

+emilio perez try putting pictures on the walls he hits. We had the same problem with one wall, and stuck a photo up there for a few weeks, I think the difference in colour helped them see the wall even when flying fast. Once they'd learned it, we took the photo down.
