We got one before knowing this, and all of those “cons” balance out when you realize how awesome these friggin dogs are.

Made me smile when it was mentioned that they are always constant by your side. When I take my two to the forest I am often on my own as they explore. They good thing is they always come back to check that I haven’t collapsed. They do love their food 😱

Good realistic review of the GSP. One other factor is longevity. Mine is 16 years old and have seen others go into their mid teens. Particularly the smaller ones. Yes they do need a lot of exercise. An hour per day is the minimum, and that is a run, not walking on a leash.

We love our GSP. The high energy gets me off the couch and out for a walk or trip to the dog park. And once a week to Dog Beach.(San Diego). Shedding is somewhat worse than what this video said

I also noticed besides the wirehair, they also show English Pointers. Give him a lot of exercise and a lot of love, and they will become a great dog. We give our GSP 5-6 days of hard off leash running. The one day a week he does not get out, he can get very frustrated. The frustration thing is the big thing I noticed over other hunting breeds. Much more emotional and not necessarily in a good way.

Met one yesterday and she seems perfect from what the owner told me. She CAN be left alone in the house for hours and very happy to be walked twice a day. During the whole time while another dog was playing with her and barked from time to time, this GSP didn’t make a single sound. Very impressive!

In my view all cons have one and the same root-question: are you prepared to give yourself into this as a GSP is giving himslef into everything he does. If you think having a GSP is fun, or a hobby or "a part of your lesiure time" then GSP is not for you. If you think having a GSP means a certain lifestyle that you will be adopting for the rest of a 15-16 years, then yes, this is for you.

In my opinion, it is incorrect to talk about the pros and cons, since a dog is not a mobile phone, a washing machine, etc. It would be better to use the concept of "features of the breed of dogs" or something like that. Just because any dog should not please a person and it exists as it is. For some, a playful and energetic dog is a joy, for some it is not, but this does not mean that this is a minus of the breed.

I have owned GSPs for the past 50 years. On two occasions, one of them risked his life to save mine. In one case, he jumped at the forehead of an angry Charolais bull that was attacking me (I'm a farmer). Later, another GSP attacked two strong armed men who were blocking my vehicle during a "car jacking". PSGs are not courageous, they just ignore fear. This can sometimes lead them to put themselves in dangerous situations so you should always keep an eye on them. They are wonderful friends for children and show infinite patience with them, but for cats there is nothing to do, they chase them.

I kept mine on a leash on my belt inside for 6 months till he leaned not to chase inside cat. We busted him out the pound 10 years ago. Lost him to arthritis in his spine and dementia. Broke my heart to stop his hurt. We had a deal if any one needed bitten I would do it as I have words for a judge.

Whoever made this is quite clueless on the "CONS". GSP are not, as a habit, killers, they are chasers and retrievers. I have owned shorthairs and NONE, even completely intact males have ever shown a killer instinct, except with an alpha challenge from another male dog, then they are unbelievable quick fight finishers. They do LOVE the chase, but if the cat or squirrel stops running, so do they! I have seen them jump at chest level full speed into an adolescent ,...so there is that,..they can be rough players, but they are ridiculously tolerant of children. The video also SERIOUSLY underestimates the exercise time,...by a factor of three at least. Awesome dog, but definitely NOT for most people...

@@ericabalko916 It depends on how old they are and what any potential previous owners were like, but as long as you remain extremely consistent they are pretty easy to train.
