Puertorican away from home here. Like he said there are hundreds of different variations on this. I've seen people add chocolate, some cherry. I am happy to see such a traditional drink from home, specially how to make the coconut cream from scratch since it's not easy to find in some States. However, this is the first time I see it without the egg and with nutmeg. My family throws in some cloves and other things I am forgetting to the mixture at the beginning.

@@MarioPerez-ks3rx understandable, all puerto ricans are different though! i'm puerto rican and my family, along with many others we know, follow the tradition I stated. my grandparents and their family members immigrated to the NYC area a long time ago were part of that community, so maybe it's more cultural to that area :) not really sure, but I trust you!

Great recipe! The agua de especias, (spice water) we also use 8 cloves, 5 star anis along with 3 cinnamon sticks. I personally use the grated nutmeg and cinnamon as a garnish on top. And usually I use regular water to boil down into almost a very runny, dark syrup, reducing the liquid over two thirds than the original amount. Due to it being cheaper and using coconut milk and cream to make the coquito. But the coconut water is a great thing. Its also common to see Pistachio coquito made with the addition of pistachio ice cream, this might make for a thicker end result with with some chopped pistachios might make a nice garnish without sinking. I say might as I'm not a fan of it and just haven't made it myself. But an assortment of flavors and variations are popular. And.lastly, happy holidays!

My wife makes a variation of this with vanilla ice cream. It makes it really thick, almost like you’re drinking an adult milkshake and obviously uses A LOT of rum but you can’t really taste it. I think also using an añejo type rum such as bacardi or palo viejo makes the drink more authentic. Normally too the alcohol is already mixed in the drink not added after.
