The story of this splendid woman and her art is another journey into the frailty of greatness. Thank you for such a tender presentation. I can only wish to see them, but your description of holding the Maji card with her poignant hope of safe delivery will not leave me. 🙏💐

What a fascinating artist and one I hadn't heard of before. Love the idea of those little 'passports' going around the world with her pastels. Curators everywhere are now checking the back of those pictures......!

Thank you for this wonderful half-hour during which I can think of things much more entertaining and beautiful than the pandemic. Although I studied art history at one point, I was not well versed in Italian painters so it was wonderful to be introduced to Rosalba Carriera. And I love the tiny, secret notes asking for the protection of the Magi as the paintings traveled to their various destinations!

A tour de force Xavier you deserve what Fleming called a "solid" drink. I love that crowd of Rosalba's at the Gemaldegalerie in Dresden its like stepping into a room full of mid 18th century people who are vivid and recognisably human. She was such a great artist.

This is my first "Cocktails with a Curator". I have known about Rosalba from studying miniature painters. She is right up there with the best. As for the speaker, Xavier, His presentation was excellent. A clear and concise historical explanation without the terms that require you to use a dictionary whenever many art historians and critics speak. I look forward to more of these. Thank you

Wide-ranging and beautifully focused on one of the most fascinating artists of her time, and I'm so pleased that the Frick continues to grow. Somehow I suspect the two new portraits are Austrian nobility: their slight haughtiness, their physicality, their impeccable breeding. I hope that when all the diaries of the 1700s have been digitized, it'll be a cinch to search for who sat for Rosalba, and when. Researchers will amass her database in the near future! Thank you, Xavier! PS That martini is the ONLY way to enjoy Lillet.

Great episode! I'm so glad to have learned about this artist, especially considering how women are still be recast out of side characters to main characters of art history. (Though, I think the cocktail inspired by Bond Girls was perhaps not the deftest choice for an underrated female artist, considering Bond Girls have are notoriously instrumentalized side characters in the Bond series)

I thought it was the same person in drag. I went to the Frick with my parents like 15 years ago. If you're going to the Met already it's right across the street. Beautiful house. The art everywhere is definitely worth seeing but the house alone is pretty impressive.

Was Rosalba Carriera known to be gender fluid? It is so interesting how the self portrait seems to reveal a masculine version of Rosalba and a feminine version of Rosalba. Are these self portraits revealing two different identities, one closer to reality, than the other?
