I feel that ‘Remember Me’ reminds me of how the music industry treats artists with their songs. When Hector sings it to young Coco, it has a sweet meaning and feels personal, when Ernesto sings the song, it sounds over saturated(like a lot of today’s pop music)and like it’s trying to please everyone. It’s very showy, and has fake passion. Just because something or someone is popular does not make it great or that it should be praised.

I'm the daughter of an immigrant family from another culture with family-oriented values living in America, and I've always received conflicting messages from the media and from my parents between individualism and a sense of community. Everything I watched as a kid was "follow your dreams" and if your family didn't accept you, you didn't need them. Coco put that conflict on the screen and showed it shouldn't be as easy to abandon a loving family for your dream as the other movies make it seem. I don't remember seeing movies about the importance of family before. It means a lot to finally see one.

I Don’t know in other places, but here in Mexico family is so important, like everything we do is for family. Mamá Coco and how everyone treats her it’s something mexicans see and live everyday, for us, the elders are people who must be respected and loved. This is something kids in Mexico learn since very Young age, so I am very glad that kids in other places Can learn that. Like my father always says “The person is dead if you forget them”. Great video and Btw I adore Your voice (sorry for my bad english I am Mexican).

In defense for Mulan though, she did choose family as the most important thing in her life by becoming who she really was, so the story is basically two in one. She saved her father, risked to completely dishonour her entire family and ancestors, saved China and that all by becoming who she was destined and meant to be. Also, I'll defend Mulan forever because it's perfect and flawless and I love it too much.

Also I should add that the Emperor gave her the sword exactly because she brought honour to her family (it was a way to tell her dad that his family was in good moral standying - with china and his village). She didn't went to war because "she was not like the other girls". She was afraid of her dad dying, he had a limp. Mulan was the ultimate "scrifice all for family", cause they were kinda in a suicide mission (historicaly wise) and her father completely ignoring the sword the emperor gave her to tell her he was honored by having her as a daughter is kinda "I don't care what people would think, I love you and I understand the risk you took for our family"

This is the MOST accurate Coco's review I have seen. There's a lot of common places in the other ones, like "pursuing your dreams" and "believe in yourself", and while the movie keep this topics on the table, I always felt that the main point of it is the family support. Absolutely loved this video, it's so precise it's frightening, I even have learned one or two things about the movie I never reflected about, like the differences between the spirit guardians.

This movie made me ugly cry. I'm a quarter Mexican, and know nothing about my Mexican family. Because my grandpa was more concerned about seizing is moment. He only cares about sharing his heritage if it makes him look good. Every time I've asked about family members I never knew, what their traditions were, and how the grew up, he only mentions the family members who've become doctors or lawyers. Or who have gone on to garner success. He's more concerned with being seen as an impressive person than as an important family member. He alone holds the key to me understanding my heritage, but he won't share it. It's frustrating and heartbreaking. I know what it's like to be Miguel. To have part of my ancestry cut off from me because someone in the family didn't like it or understand. I know what it's like to be disconnected from my heritage and only concerned with American ideals, never growing up with Mexican ones. I think this is a real and harsh struggle for white people of color-especially us chicanos and pochos. The separation of family tradition from American idealism is a huge factor in the lives of multigenerational immigrant families, and causes tension similar to what we see in Coco. The movie inspired me to pursue my family history and to try to become more connected with my family. I hope it does the same for other Mexican American people. I hope it inspires us to remember our roots and our family-not only because doing so is part of our culture, but also because it's important to keeping that culture alive forever.

I completely relate. I'm half Mexican, but my dad has always been so focused on being Americanized and passing on his Christian ideals instead of teaching my brothers and me about our Mexican heritage. And then he and his side of the family would always turn around and claim that my brothers and I are Hispanic. But we're not. We weren't raised with any aspect of our cultural or linguistic heritage so there's this constant disconnect between us and our surviving Mexican family. Ironically, my White mom was the one who always pushed for us to be taught Spanish and to learn about our culture, and she has a much stronger respect for fostering strong familial bonds than my dad ever did because most of her side of the family is scattered. She even tried setting up an ofrenda one year and my dad told her to take it down.

I think I what I can say is this: I'm Mexican, and even if our countries are near, our roots never leave us and COCO just make you see -in a way- what our values in family are based upon. In a way yes, a lot of Disney movies teach kids that maybe if your family says NO to your dreams you pursue them no matter what; BUT us Mexicans have sooo much bond to family...we want them to support us, that what's the movie is telling. Pursue your dreams, but never forget that you are not alone, family is there to help and love you no matter what. Music is not a bad way to portray this 'cus music is indeed a thing we Mexicans love a lot, not saying anyone else outside don't, but we can all confirm that hearing the music from your own place in the world give us a sense of pride and joy of being part of that culture you have been born to. In the terms of living and death, this is a more beautiful tradition of our own ancestors; as a Historian I can confirm that our natives roots are the ones with this concept of not being afraid of death, and what it is now is a combination of does beliefs and traditions with others Spain and catholics changed here and there for you see, death for those beliefs is a little different. Dia de los Muertos is a tradition that maybe your family doesn't make an altar, not saying dishonor no us we don't, because the purpose of the day is not forgotten. I never knew far beyond the parents of my grandpas, but through photos and stories you heard of them and it's a way like Coco to never forget them. In the end all I want to say is, I loved this movie because it wasn't a satyr of us nor our beliefs in how we live [us Mexicans]. And the song touched my sister and I -Remember Me- for our visaabuela [the mother of my grandmother of my mother side] was our second mother in childhood, and left us to soon too, and this made us remember her once again with love.

It's interesting because originally the movie was going to be about a boy who mourns the loss of his mother, but once they learned more about the Mexican culture, they realized it didn't fit and instead made it more about respecting death and not seeing it as a bad thing to get over, but rather a necessary step in which you are still connected to loved ones.

I would argue that in the case of Mulan, it wasn't at all about her family learning to accept her, but for her to learn to accept clarity in viewing her own motivations for her actions for what they really are: inherently selfish. Acknowledging this and putting forth her true face--the face of Mulan and not Ping--while still doing these incredible things she's always been prone to do allows her to self-actualize and return to her family to ask for acceptance back into the fold. Her return is particularly significant, as she doesn't come parading down the road with her treasures proclaiming her a hero, she kneels before her father (whom she arguably wronged the deepest) and offers her accomplishments in an act of apology. She is asking for forgiveness; for stealing from her family, for behaving dishonorably, and for allowing her selfishness to carry her through an incredibly foolish and dangerous plan. The fact that her father, and her mother and grandmother from a distance, are just relieved to have her home speaks volumes about how this particular family isn't about to be shaken apart by a misguided course of action. You could go so far as to say that Mulan is the proto-Coco, as it resolves in much the same way: Miguel's family overlooks his theft of the guitar and his disappearance on the day of the dead because he's home and he's safe. This moment isn't highlighted in the wake of Miguel's desperation to get to Mama Coco, but it is there. The thing about Coco that I feel this video does miss though, is that it really is just as much about the family learning to accept Miguel as it is about Miguel learning to accept the family. The music motif tying the living and dead together was well explained, but it misses the face that Miguel's living family except for Mama Coco completely rejected part of Miguel, to the point of destroying his things and isolating Mama Coco from the thing her parents used to do together. Music was important for Mama Coco, as it reminded her of her father, of happy memories of her family singing together, and was a source of joy for her. However, the family choosing to shut music out entirely robs Mama Coco of this central part of her, and as a consequence, leaves Miguel and Coco both isolated in different ways from the rest of the family. It's no coincidence that Miguel confided in Coco and no one else in the family about everything--they are two kindred spirits in this family. The family spirit is in this place broken and needs to be repaired; the living family in particular needed to take a step back and understand how their denial of this central part of Miguel and Mama Coco was actively hurting both of them, and as a result, hurting the family as a whole. All sides of a family have to try to understand each other, to reach out to each other, or the family suffers. This is an important sub-theme in Coco that isn't getting discussed enough, in my opinion.

I like this Analysis. It aligns with what i felt while watching the story too. If you look at Mama Imelda, you can see an illustration of a pivotal shift in the family acceptance of Miguel's attraction to music. If one looks at her and the way she came to see Miguel's attraction to music as important enough to allow him to practice it, you can see how even the family made steps toward Miguel. It is a sub-theme but i feel it's just as important.

With Mulan, I don't think this is quite accurate. She does what she does because she doesn't want her father to die in battle. She took his place because she saw he was too weak and old to fight well. She did what she did out of her love for her family. It was convinient because she wasn't successful in other aspects of her life so running away to the army was her escape, but she did it for him. She saw how tense the atmosphere was the night before and she couldn't let it happen. Once she gets there, then she realizes she was foolish, and I think this is why she kneels at the end.

Coco's message about family kind of fell flat for me, because my family was abusive and I'm estranged from every blood relative I have (and I am much happier for it). It's a good message to send and it's not seen nearly enough in American pop culture, but it made me recoil a bit because of my experiences. The word "obligation" coupled with the word "family" also repulses me. That argument was used against me a lot to coerce me when I was younger, and always ended up hurting me.

I'm sorry you had to go through that awful experience, it's true though, not every family is as loving as Miguel's is in the film. I guess what could be taken from it is, rather than just blood relatives or any blood relatives at all, having mutual respect and compassion for the people who love you and care for you, your own non-blood related family in a sense
@JinlongTheGoldenDragon
@JinlongTheGoldenDragon 3 жыл бұрын
To be honest in the movie they never mentioned that family has to be blood related. To keep the dead alive you have to pass down memories of them to whoever you're close to, be them blood related or not. I think the movie's message isn't that blood is thicker than water, rather than remembering those you loved and who loved you will keep them alive, and the ones who love you will do the same when you're gone

This analysis is great. I'm only now realizing this is why Coco was so beautiful to me. Being exposed to all these older movies pushing us to be ourselves against the values of the people around us created such a big dissonance between mine and my Asian family's culture. I wish I had Coco when I was younger. I wish I would have realized earlier how much our loved ones matter and that pursuing our self interests do not have to exclude them.

I love this movie so much. I live as far from Mexico as possible (I´m a Finn lol). We actually did have a similar festival to Dia De Los Muertos. It was called Kekri and it was celebrated in Finland before the spread of Christianity. People invited their passed away relatives to dinner and celebration. I have picked up a habit to celebrate Kekri at the beginning of November. Anyway, I was crying my eyes out when I watched Coco for the first time. My grandmother has a severe case of dementia and every time when I saw mama Coco I kept thinking of her. I have lost many of my family members. In Finnish culture, death is still quite a tabu (probably was not when Kekri was celebrated) and I think it can be quite harming that we don´t talk about the death and our passed away loved ones more. The message on this film is very powerful. It´s now my favorite Disney film, together with Beauty and the beast.

Loved the vídeo but I think Moana actually finds a balance between her family’s wishes and her own. First she accepts the path her father wants and when she embarcs on her journey it’s because that’s what she needs to do to protect her people as the leader that she is, not just because she wants to explore and I found that to be a very positive message.

I liked "Coco" because it was another brave foray by Pixar into a taboo topic--death. How do you make death a palatable subject for small children to enjoy and to tie it together into a greater, more positive message? "Coco" in that way reminded me of "Wall-E", which was a scathing critique of overconsumption, pollution, materialism and the obesity epidemic. How do you make such heavy topics light, funny and entertaining? The fact that Pixar did it again is a great testament to their creativity.

I did love Coco a lot, but i just don't see Miguel as the primary one who needs to learn about familial love. His admiration for a man he doesn't know in no way deletes his love for his family. It's just different. I don't remember seeing him stop loving his family. What i saw was his family withholding their esteem of him because of his love of music. His own wishes and preferences are shoved down and invalidated and he is forcefully encouraged to only do what he is told. If Miguel hadn't been single-minded in pursuing his own love of music, his whole family would have been left in a terrible no-music world in which a patriarch purposefully abandoned them rather than being unfairly torn from them by a selfish person. They all owe Miguel an ENORMOUS thank you for saving them from this awful resentful and fenced-off life. I see this partly as a story about the damage that resentment can cause, closing you off from the true beauties and pleasures of life. Only by letting go of these resentments can we live lives of meaning and truly show our loved ones how valuable they are to us.
@bluebutterfly5062
@bluebutterfly5062 6 жыл бұрын
That's true, but I feel like it goes both ways. For a second there, Miguel also resented his family for not loving music like he did and selfishly abandoned his family--and another person who needed his help, even tho his was a stranger as far as they were concerned--similarly to how Hector did. So Miguel also had to learn that love and family is stronger than resentment, and he also owes them for opening their hearts at the end of it all

I have to disagree with you in relation to Mulan. Mulan is more similar to Coco then to the other Disney classics. In the film Mulan wants to bring honor to her family, at 1st by doing what society expects from her. When that fails, and her father´s life is at risk she tries to do that by taking his place, while sparing him to die or bring dishonor to the family in the process. If the story was about her having wanted to be a soldier all her life, whyle her family wanted her to follow tradition then in would have been the same story as the Little Mermaid. But everything Mulan did, she did for her family.

Friendly reminder that even De La Cruz lives on. He's not going to be forgotten anytime soon because he's the villain of Hector's story now. I would argue that Mulan's motivations were more involved in familial sacrifice and helping the ones you love in any way you can than most other Disney princess movies, but I can see where you're coming from with the ending. I didn't make that connection with the being saved by spirit animals thing, that was a really interesting insight.

Finally an accurate review of this movie! This is my go to channel for movie analysis because of the love and deep dissection of movies. You understand the tradition perfectly! I’ve gotten angry that some people that called the tradition “stupid.” Why would it be stupid to fondly remember your loved ones; even the ones that you never met? This is a beautiful way to connect with them because they are a part of you. Without them, we wouldn’t be where we are now. Miguel’s character development is one of my favorites. “Family comes first.” He goes from pursuing his dream to let it go if it means it can save his family. Ugh, I love this movie so much! Thank you Screen Prism. You’re so underrated. I’ll be sure to donate to your patron as soon as I get my bank card.

I can see where Coco really succeeds here and your video has a lot good points. Like the video started with scenes from Disney movies where characters embraced their desire to be more and leave their comfort zone. I'd say that it really depends on the situation and environment you find yourself in. In reality not all families can solve issues that involve serious abuse, manipulation and dysfunction. Realistically when Miguel had to witness his guitar being destroyed in spite of anger from his family (that could leave some serious trauma when being so young and powerless) Many kids had to face these traumatic situations where they were blamed and seen as the bad guy in the family cause they wouldn't let us have a voice or feel embraced. However Coco is still a beautiful film about family and honouring ancestors. So while this might be seen as a anti-biological family comment that's not the case it's more to enlighten that families are different and in Coco's case demonstrates a family that learns to embrace and love again. It's more to also give a perspective that (Family) comes from those who cares and doesn't haft to be (blood related). Family comes first when we feel at home, where we feel safe, listened and proud in my opinion. I just think that's very important. And I think it would be great if Disney or Pixar would approach that for next time.

I don’t know how you can miss the whole point of a film or drop the ball so badly but you did it in this video. Coco wasn’t about living forever, kids know that no one lives forever. The point of the film is How do you want to be remembered? And for all intents and purposes, what kind of boring family do you live in in which conflict and arguments don’t arise? Like, at all? You do realize that real life familial relationships are not like how you see in The Brady Bunch, Full House, or Horsin Around right? Not only did you get every aspect of the other movies you brought up wrong, you completely misrepresented them. That makes this a total failure of a video.

Out of all your mention about "pursuing their dream", I think Tarzan is different, he want to be a part of his own kind once more with Jane but when his family need his help and his lead after Kerchak died, he swept in, he didn't leave them out cold just to be with human like he once wanted to. Instead, we see Professor Porter & Jane join in tarzan's world leaving theirs behind because they love it and feel belong there, Tarzan emphasize the theme of family as well with "two worlds one family" phrase :D

What are you trying to say Screenprism? That children shouldn’t persuade their career goals or their dreams because their family tells them not to? That’s a horrible message to send. Coco wasn’t sending that type of message, Miguel is still going to be a musician when he grows up, he’s just not going to value fame and fortune over his family.

Since I was a little girl I've wanted to see the other half of my culture in a Disney movie. Being a half Mexican child in the use only living with the Mexican family and only seeing Europeon Disney princesses was sad. I may be super light skinned and yeah maybe I "looked" like the Disney princesses but my culture was never there. My bisabuelita was the one who practically raised me and she LOVED Disney movies. The movie came out a year or so after she passed away. I cried when I found out about the movie. She would have loved it. But I see my nenita everytime I watch Coco. Disney really did me a solid. Ahora como olvidar a mi nenita cuando porfin su cultura, no, NUESTRA cultura esta vivo en una pelicula de Disney

My only deal with this movie is how is it that Hector and Miguel share the same last name when his daughter and her daughter have changed their names when they got married? Though Rivera is a fairly common name...
@HIPOCRUPTUS

In Mexico women don't change their last names when got married, but I think the Rivera name might have been lost in the 4th generation unless they have married unrelated Riveras from the next town.

I loved this video, this is exactly what I took away from the movie. I know that the final death is sad, but I like to think of it as the final rest, an escape from both life and death. I don’t exactly know what I’m talking about, but I was hoping that you would’ve elaborated on that more, still, it was an excellent video as always😊

But......he gets what he wants. Hector is forgiven, and a valued member of the family again, and Miguel gets his music AND his family. They get to keep him by valuing his happiness. His family learns to embrace both Miguel and Hector’s individuality, which is how the family stays together.

6:21-6:38 Brave actually included this same message, though it didn't go as deep as Coco. Merida does seize her moment and embraces her individualism at the archery games. But doesn't think how her act can anger the older and more traditional people, who have traveled all the way there as invited guests. But in her speech later on, Merida unintentionally manages to convince them and her mother that the unity of their land isn't in a formal tradition, and how her being married as a prize isn't necessary. And just like Miguel, who in the end is allowed to pursue his dreams as a musician, Merida ends up in a place of catharsis, where things finally work out. And BTW, *both* movies include a villain who caused a great amount of deliberate harm for others by seizing their moments, cause they were chasing for something they considered belonging to them. It's kinda cool, now that I think about it. This video helped me realize why is it that I love these films so much. Coco is more smoother version of the two, but I personally also love Brave above many of the most appreciated Pixar and Disney classics.

Every corner of our india is about family mostly the eastern country values resonate with it... But its being slowly corrupted by western culture...where nihilistic behavior, soon after 18 kick out from nest, and other parental narrative behavior is being shubbing down our throat... With this emerging sexual liberation and individuality really ruining our family values.

Of course loving your family is important but I would argue that wanting to live your own life even if your family doesn’t agree is also important. Shoving what makes you, you, down inside and obeying family wishes can make people depressed and angry. If your family loves you, they want you to be happy.

I remember a phrase in the movie "Crazy rich asians" where the mother says: Americans always strive for their own dreams or something of the sort. I'm mexican I can see how deeply rooted family is here, the community is very important. Disney being an american franchise follows that philosophy, It's beautiful to see differences and I love that disney represented my beautiful country like this.

Thanks for this review. I think all Mexicans I know tear up a bit when they remember this movie. I've lived abroad for almost 20 years now but the one thing I'm trying to pass my kids about Mexican culture is Dia de Muertos and our attitude to our ancestor's memories and our own deaths.

I really like how you make this sort of comparison with US and Latin culture. Not to undermine one or the other, but because their differences are a fact. A fact that should be appreciated and comprehended. As a proud mexican, this film is just great, and the biggest proof that entertainment and its messages are key in today's world, and how much they can be used in a positive way.

I always get heartfelt when I watch this film. It is what makes me want to have an offrenda so my family members dint get forgotten. Although “remember me is the song that everyone cries to, I feel the song that makes me cry a lot is mi proud corazon. It is happy, but mixed with the images of coco being reunited with hector Imelda makes me cry so hard. It is bittersweet. I’m glad they made hector miquel’s family member not Ernesto. Oh this film. It gives me every feel in the book.

De la Cruz is not forgotten. He won’t go through the final death because people remember him differently. Instead of telling others about how great of a musician he was they’ll tell each other about his crimes. He’ll just be living under that clock unless someone helps him out.

When I watched Coco I was shocked at how similar Día de Muertos is to the Hungry Ghost Festival in Chinese culture where for one night the dead can visit the world of the living and can receive offerings from their family in the form of food and various items. It'll be interesting to see that get represented in a mainstream film.
