I read Giovanni’s Room I think a year or two ago and something that stuck with me is that I’d never heard anyone talk about it like a love story. I think David struggles too much with his sexuality and identity. I remember really liking it because it gave some insight to the grey area of “love” in a less inclusive/accepting time and the choices people make to secure their place in society vs honoring their hearts. Very interesting book!

i appreciate that, i think because i thought it was a love story it didn’t meet my expectations

I felt the same with Giovanni's Room! :) There is a kind of suspicion for me, every time I read a classic or a modern classic and don't like it like others do. I'm always thinking to myself, "Am I too stupid to understand this?" or is it just overrated. Giovanni's Room is a good book, nontheless, criticism is healthy and needed in Literature and yeah overall ig I would rate it the same as you did, 3/5
@CocoDay Жыл бұрын
right!! am i too stupid or is it actually just overhyped?? 😂 glad i’m not the only one :)

read giovanni’s room last year and i really liked it 🧚♂️ but i can understand it being a bit vague and not really giving the reader enough to understand the story…loved the video btw, keep up with the good work!!🫶

I understand it took place in the 1950s, but that line about b3@ting women in Giovanni's Room was horrendous.

right! i couldn’t tell if giovanni was making a bad joke or not…

your reading vlogs are so comforting and peaceful 🥺🫶🏻 i was also bothered by giovanni’s sexism, even though it’s an older book… i felt disappointed bc i felt like i didn’t get the actual love story i was promised. i didn’t connect with it, i felt like it was very surface level unfortunately :/ although i understand it’s cultural importance and impact, i wasn’t the biggest fan. anyways, have a beautiful day
@CocoDay Жыл бұрын
right! it felt more like david was using giovanni but i was expecting intense love :/ and then from giovanni i think he knew what would happened and did it anyway to hurt himself :( glad you enjoyed the video xx
@ellas.buecherberge Жыл бұрын
I agree...kinda. i also hated the aspects of sexismn, giovannis way to treat himself and David being so ashamed. On the other side it felt so pure/raw and I really adored the writing style
