Can you make this into a foaming soap? It looks lovely!
@Thethingswellmake
@Thethingswellmake 7 сағат бұрын
Yes, of course! Just dilute it a bit more than you normally would and use it in a foaming dispenser. It's a great way to be frugal and use less! I have several at home!

Thank you so much for this recipe! Can you stop after the blending part, without cooking it?
@Thethingswellmake
@Thethingswellmake Ай бұрын
The problem with not cooking it, is that your soap paste will stay opaque and won't finish the saponification process. I've experimented with this with several batches, actually. If you don't cook it at all, it's likely the soap paste will stay quite opaque and cloudy. If you only slightly cook it, it eventually finishes the process on its own, but can take quite a while. It eventually becomes transparent.

Hello! Can citric acid and sugar be added to water? When diluting the soap for use, is it necessary to add a preservative? Glycerin is a humectant, does it somehow also have the role of reducing the "aggressiveness" of the coconut? How do you adjust the Ph to what value do you generally set it? Thank you!

Did it really Work well on skin
@Thethingswellmake
@Thethingswellmake 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can use it on skin without issues. Some people say coconut oil soap is drying, but I haven't had issues using it in the shower. Our whole family has used it and likes it. The one made with olive oil (also on the blog) should be theoretically less drying and more conditioning, but, to be honest, we don't notice that much of a difference. (The difference in bar soaps made with one vs. the other is huge, though!)

Why do you need to use lye? I thought lye is very strong. It can eat your pipes away, we used to soak griddles in lye .. Gets all the grease dissolved and nice and clean. But it burns skin too. So why do we use it in soap?
@Thethingswellmake
@Thethingswellmake 3 жыл бұрын
It's impossible to make soap without lye. All true soap has used lye in the process, but through the chemical reaction, no lye remains in the soap. (I wrote more in depth about it here: thethingswellmake.com/what-is-lye-can-i-make-soap-without-it/ ) Just think of salt (aka. Sodium chloride). You wouldn't want to handle sodium and chloride is also very corrosive. Yet, you eat salt in some form daily. Interestingly enough, lye is actually used quite often in food making. They cure olives with lye and also make pretzel and bagel crusts with it.

Any changes in the recipe would need to be run through a lye calculator. Different oils have different properties in soap than in cosmetics, too, and many make for a very cloudy soap. I talk more about it here: thethingswellmake.com/oils-for-soap-making/

What can this soap be used for ?
@Thethingswellmake
@Thethingswellmake 3 жыл бұрын
It's pretty multi-purpose- you can use it for general cleaning around the house, but we've also used it in the shower for skin. Theoretically, one made with only olive oil should be milder and more conditioning for the skin, but we haven't noticed a huge difference. Dr. Bronners is made with mostly coconut oil and isn't that different from this one. You can use it for the same things.

I live in Spain where the regulations are very strict. I'd need a separate lab for making it, and would have to spend a lot of money on microbial and other testing as well as insurance, etc. It isn't worth it for me. I prefer showing people how to make things for themselves.

Is it okay to make liquid soap by cold process method? Basically I want to make shampoo for myself but I don't have a crockpot and can only use cold process. However I searched a lot but couldn't find a recipe that uses cold process for liquid soap. Could you please let me know if it would be okay to use cold process, and if I use the right proportions, it would not make my hair dry and rough, and also about how to adjust a high pH above 8 for instance? Moreover what else can I add in a shampoo against hairfall?
@Thethingswellmake
@Thethingswellmake 2 жыл бұрын
Liquid soap isn't usually cold processed because you end up with something opaque and a cloudy liquid soap. I think that it's difficult to complete the saponification of liquid soap without heat. You can use an oven instead of a crock pot, though. I talk more about it here: thethingswellmake.com/how-to-make-liquid-soap-start-here/ While I love making soap, I don't love it for hair. It's pH is always going to be too high for hair. I explain more about it here: thethingswellmake.com/importance-of-ph-in-cosmetics/
