I've never seen this movie, but it seems to really capture the wonderful optimism that was so unique to the 80's, you just could not make this movie today.

I saw it in the theatre when I was a kid. It use to be on all the movie channels and easily rentable. I don't know why it's not on any streaming channel. If you think ET grabbed your heart, this movie is packed full of emotions.

I was very close with my grandma, but at the time of her death, I didn't have a very emotional reaction. One of the reasons for this was because it was something I was waiting for, due to her having dementia the last years of her life; my last conversation with her a few months before her death lasted only five minutes, and she didn't even know me anymore. Another reason is because I was focused on my wife, and soon to be born daughter. A few years later, we had purchased this film, and I was listening to Ron Howard's commentary during my breakfasts before I went to work. On one of these mornings, I had a dream about my grandma, but I didn't really get all emotional, because nothing really sad happened in it. Ironically, later on that morning, when I was continuing the commentary while having my breakfast, I am at the part when Ben and Mary say goodbye to their daughter and grandson, and Ron Howard said that Maureen Stapleton had a tough time with that scene, because Maureen said that she would never leave her grandchildren. At that moment, I remembered I dreamt of my grandma, and started crying.

Thanks Mat. for the memories of this one. Im 42 now and I absolutely loved this movie as a kid. I was super close with all my grandparents and Ron Howard really creates that connection between all the retirees and the audience. Its like any of the characters could be your grandparents. Plus what an original storyline and great script.

Great video - this is such an under appreciated film. I agree with what you said reference younger audiences not relating to the ageing aspect of the film, it’s definitely more relatable to an older / mature audience.

I just realized that this included Tyrone Power Jr.'s first role! What an amazing experience that must have been for Don Ameche, who worked very intimately with his father in Alexander's Ragtime Band! Thanks for pointing that out, and thanks for the memories! My partner Kevin was a lad of 14 when he saw both movies and is a big fan of Don Ameche's work.

I've always had to defend this movie as a guilty pleasure because I always had a soft spot for it, largely because of Janes Horner's score which gets lost in the shuffle of his scores from more popular movies. The themes were so unique and identifiable, feeling like they were written for a much bigger film. Certainly one of Horner's most underrated works.

Back in the day, I saw this movie praised by "At The Movies" with Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert., so It became a family movie at the theater. I'm now as old as the "folks at the retirement home," so it has a different ring to me now. I haven't seen a KZbin movie reaction to "Cocoon," but then, not many react to "After Life" (1998), either. kzbin.info/www/bejne/en-cpKVrrLuen80

This channel is ..... let's say, 'heavily inspired' by Oliver Harper's channel: same template and the way different subjects are treated, same narration style, and even calling it "retrospective". Not that there's copyright on these things, but it's pretty blatantly copied.
@MatsMovieReviews3 жыл бұрын
Oliver is supportive of my channel and content ! Thanks for the compliment thou ! I do admire his content but trying to be different with my own opinion, looking back at movies I love with my own personal perspective! Many KZbin channels do retrospectives these days, Oliver was the first to do so. When discussing the production and similar topic it’s difficult to not appear similar!
