Lelouch had interesting and unique relationships with Kallen and Shirley, but in my opinion, CC is the only one he actually fell in love with. I felt his connection to Kallen was more of an attraction than anything else. Meanwhile, he cared deeply for Shirley but I think she became to much of a source of guilt and pain for him to ever truly see her in a romantic way. Lelouch and CC didn't trust each other at first --- but I think over time they developed a bond of respect and understanding that neither of them had for anyone else. I had mixed feelings about the decision to resurrect Lelouch in the film, but considering they did, I'm glad they had him and CC end up together.

But I think it's only some kinda possession or connection between them. Stronger than love, deepest down, they depend on each other. Solitude and burden await them, how can Lelouch lose the only one who "knows" him so much? I think on the day he accidentally commanded Euphy to kill the Japanese, he'd abandoned everything included love and forgiveness. I think it's not only him but also the viewers can't stand him losing C.C. Lelouch has had enough for him.

Holy crap this whole speech was amazing but 1:09 kills me, "Don't die looking like that! You should come to death smiling! I promise you the smile you never had! Please!" The sheer desperation in Lelouch's voice, the foreshadowing of his own death, and the way he promises C.C. to make her smile... gah, it's too sad and yet wholesome! Lelouch care so much about her and arguably he saved the world with his speech because by convincing C.C. to live and not give her Code to Charles he was able to prevent Charles from fully completing the Sword of Akashi and realizing his ultimately goal of remaking the world. Scary to think that the fate of the world basically hinged on a few words.

People say Lelouch and C.C. should be a couple. But to me, the perfect ending for these two would be Lelouch granting her wish and killing her (with a smile on C.C.'s face). I'd prefer that because it really speaks to Lelouch's character. He'd let someone he loved die and find peace, regardless of whether or not it was what he wanted. That's the kind of sacrifices Lelouch always makes.

All C.C. wanted was to be loved, but it turned into her wanting to die because no one could fulfill her *true* wish. Since her *true* wish was never fulfilled the desire to end it all became prominent. That's why she didn't die to "God" because she saw a future for herself, but the Emperor and Empress did not.
