CODE LYOKO - EP29 - Exploration
Now that our heroes have discovered Sector 5, they decide to go and explore it in the hope of unearthing some of its secrets. First, they will have deal with a series of traps…but then they realize that this sector is in fact a part of XANA itself. It’s the perfect place to steal information from their enemy. Jeremy sees it as an opportunity to find out more about Franz Hopper, and about the anti-virus which will free Aelita from XANA. Back in the real world, Yumi's parents are worried about her nocturnal excursions and decide to keep a closer eye on her. How will she be able to help her friends now?

I always wish this show continued but then I remember it was probably good the crew shut down the computer in the end because it was taking a toll on their lives in the real world, skipping meals, losing sleep, getting bad grades, getting in trouble with their parents etc. I like that this show never glorified the whole hero thing, that even though they were all young they couldn't neglect themselves in the real world just to have fun on lyoko. That's why I probably loved this show so much as a kid

Don’t forget that if Jeremie did a Return to the Past before Ulrich and Odd came back, they would’ve still been lost in Sector 5. Yumi and Aelita were lucky to stumble across the database to figure out how to retrieve Ulrich and Odd so they likely wouldn’t have found it again until much later. So it really did matter that they got Ulrich and Odd back before Jim and the principal found the supercomputer.

Can we just admire Sector 5 and how practical it actually is. Being the core of Lyoko where it houses all of the data for Xana, Lyoko itself, and the restricted access area of the super computer it makes sense it would have protections like traps(firewalls), key mechanisms and ever changing structures(layered encryptions), powerful monsters(anti-virus and malware protection), and special codes to enter, exit, and materialize from it(layered password protection). Also just overall design of the interface area and just the soundtrack for it in general is beautiful.

They didn't necessarily break the 4th wall, as it is uncertain if they are actually aware of the audience's existence. An "episode" can mean a past event (Like saying you're forgetting a past event, not a TV episode), so since it is unclear which it didn't break the 4th wall, but rather at least a good method for reminding the audience without necessarily making the existence known.

One of this series' problems is their stats in Lyoko are incredibly inconsistent. Sometimes they can fight a hundred monsters at once and be fine, sometimes they get hit once and are down to 10 lifepoints somehow. They seem to just be as powerful or weak as the episode needs and here it's really distracting

I don't know why everyone is saying Yumi telling her parents that she's in love should cause even more concern than her coming in late. Believe it or not, contrary to popular belief not every teen in love goes down the path of sexual activities. I assume that's the only reason why people are saying that. Honestly the only real concern is and still remains to be her coming home late. I mean seriously what parent wouldn't be concerned about their kid, daughter or son staying out past 10 every night?

Her parents were mad at her for coming late and even caught her in a lie, so it makes zero sense for them to believe her when she said "I'm in love" first of all it's a crappy excuse because she didn't even mention anyone and second she didn't explain anything not where she goes, who's the person, what she does, anything. And it's true not every teen go down the sexual path but saying that and coming home at 3am is gonna make a parent mind wander. So she should've been punished even worse and they would've kept a tighter leech on her, especially since they don't know who she's talking about and teen pregnancy is thing.

It's amazing how in every episode there's always one person who can't make it to the scanner room until the three others have been virtualized because "reasons." They're basically just avoiding the fact that they have four warriors and only three scanners. They're trying to avoid that one awkward scene of someone waiting while the others go in.

I've seen a lot of them who don't want their kid to not be in a room together with the door close or they put a curfew when they go out. Try asking any parents if their teenage daughter was sneaking out late at night, coming home extremely late like she came back at 3am, lying about where she was and the only excuse she has is that she's "in love" they would not think something sexual is up? Or if they would let let her off the hook to continue coming home late without asking more questions? If your answer was yes, Idk in what world you live in my friend, or what kinda parents you have, letting her come late without even meeting the guy, or even if the guy is from the school. I never realized this before but like, Sector 5 (Or Sector V I guess) is really fucking cool. Like, for being an area that looks the same and is meant to be non linear and confusing, the potential for how much data it has and the crazy shit that can happen is really cool

Another neat thing is that when they go through a way tower you can see them going into the side of a data stream and the flow corresponds to the sector they transport to. But another point about my last statement, they always go one direction (don't ask me which one I would need to watch another episode back and I want to save that for my 3rd re-watchthrough) it's amazing how the writers keep things in continuity. While somehow managing to be slightly lazy and reuse so many assets. From entire scenes to minor things like in God knows how many episodes how Yumi pounds her fist against the floor of the scanner from a top down view.

In the first season the character models in lyoko had really uncanny, weird faces, especially Ulrich and Yumi. They couldn't emote much and there weren't a lot of shots that focused just on their faces. When i look at it now they changed the faces and they look good. I don't know if they are using the same models but with remade faces or these models are new but it's pretty neat to be honest. The action improved a lot too. Also Lyoko doesen't have a weather pattern or much detail, the enviroments are pretty empty because you can't really add a lot of detail in 2005 on a tv budget. The animators did pretty well despite all the limitations they had to work around. The show (naturally) is improving as it's going on and that's awesome to see.

It might just be nostalgia. 🥰 But now that I'm binge-watching this show, I can safely say that the plot and pacing got so much better from season 2 onwards. The scene at the beginning with Yumi and her parents is top tier writing and it brings tears to my eyes each time. They genuinely know something is wrong and care about her. When I was younger I viewed her parents as annoying and getting in her way of helping against the Xana attacks. Looking back they are 100% on the money. I feel so bad for Yumi poor girl 😢
