Honestly thought those .5 second pauses were one of the best ideas seen on the album, especially when they showed up towards the end of the album I genuinely thought my headphones were breaking, but really it just brought my full attention back to the song. Going from "aw WHAT THE FU- to OH SHIIIIIIIIT." in .5 seconds is a pretty impressive effect created with pure silence imho.

Hutch theBOI one of my musician friends said that one of the best ways to grab a listeners attention in a song is just silence, so I agree. The little skips really bring me back into the song right at the moments when my attention starts to trail off

The loud mastering on the record is likely due to the mastering engineer, Vlado Meller. He has been responsible for many extremely loud records such as Californication and MBDTF, and almost everything he works on is clipped to hell to the point of distortion. It works pretty well for Code Orange, though.

@ethann9433

I don't get how people think this style is new or unique. It's just 90's industrial and Nu-metal combined with late 2000's metalcore which are three of the worst subgenres in all of metal. Return to Dust and I Am King are both masterpieces, I'd put them both in my top 10 albums ever made but with this album and Forever they totally lost all the qualities that made them such a unique hardcore punk band on their earlier records. This style isn't pushing the genre forward, it's bringing it back to 20 years ago when metal had become commercialized mass-produced garbage
@ethann9433
@ethann9433 4 жыл бұрын
Code Orange was never like converge, people just say that because they were both really dissonant and noisy. On the surface they sound similar but the songwriting itself and the riff structure are totally different. The entire Love is Love // Return to Dust album flows together perfectly as just one long song, which is more advanced than anything converge has ever done
@samuelmercier3635
@samuelmercier3635 4 жыл бұрын
Ethan N except this isn't commercial at all, production on this would turn off most of the nu-metal fanbase imo. Love is love is fantastic, but to me the newer stuff is more memorable, more of it's time, despite obviously drawing from older styles. Personnally, it's the hate towards this and forever I don't get at all
@ethann9433
@ethann9433 4 жыл бұрын
@@samuelmercier3635 The thing I loved so much about code orange kids stuff is that it combined hardcore punk with progressive metal elements in a way that hadn't really been done before. I do respect Underneath for going back to a more progressive songwriting approach, where each song flows into the next and multiple tracks string together into one, similar to Return to Dust. Because of that, I like this record slightly more than Forever. Forever felt more like a collection of individual songs rather than a full, cohesive body of work

It’s the part I look forward to most in their songs and it’s made new fans like me, also it’s amazing that they learned to play live with those glitches. This is it. Underneath is to Code Orange what OK Computer was to Radiohead. There's no going back to what they were. They're ascended up to a whole new level.

Carlos Ruiz Eh. I love the album personally I just don’t think it’s Anthony’s cup of tea. I think Marcus is a much more well rounded vocalist. Adrian def had more brutal lows but he can’t sing to save his life. As much as I love the old Northlane stuff I’m glad they found their own sound. They would have become really stale if they continued to put out the same djenty deathcore albums.

Code Orange is like the Pink Floyd of Hardcore/Metalcore. They are pushing the boundaries of heavy music in such unique ways that leave me more excited for whatever comes next. Also, Reba Meyers is a HELL of a shredder, singer, and songwriter.

But then there's Pitchfork, who didn't like this album in hipster fashion. "An overzealous pastiche full of inspirations but near-devoid of new ideas, Underneath is as goofy and garish as the worst of nu metal." I'm trying to figure out if they listened to the same album... lol

I definitely was not feeling this record nearly as much as you, but I can appreciate what the band was aiming for on here. You might also appreciate what Honey Harper aimed for on his latest album, Starmaker, as he combines folk, country, and shoegaze to create something super memorable and earworm-y

This one surprises me quite a bit. I found the new Code Orange to just sound dated without adding anything unexpected or new in to a sound that feels beaten like a dead horse. But then again, meshing metalcore with industrial influences may just be two types of music I never truly loved, so i don't look through nostalgic glasses and get the feels when I hear something familiar.
