On February 20, 2023, police were called to a vehicle theft in progress in Wausau, WI. A 24-year-old woman stole a vehicle after the owner left the keys inside the unlocked car. Following a pursuit that covered several miles, the suspect ultimately lost control of the vehicle and slid into a ditch. Further investigation revealed that this incident was not her initial involvement in vehicle theft.

@@macforme The problem is bond releases are pretty much mandatory unless the crime is severe enough. The bigger problem is signature bonds or too low bond amounts to make the financial cost too much of a sacrifice to commit a crime again. I have severe doubts there are many people left in her life right now that are willing to pay that $7,500 cash bond to get her out this time, just to have her end back up in jail a month later.

I assume he did it regularly as, in the beginning of the video, they mention that it was something he ‘usually did when at the YMCA’. If that is anything to go off of, he had a habit of doing so. The highest felony charge they have in this is the auto theft. Are you willing to have your car crashed into, totaled or have one of your family member's hurt or killed in order to try and recover someone else's vehicle? Especially if the officer's know who the offender already is and could have terminated the pursuit at literally any time after they found it out? Remember, not YOUR car being stolen, some random person you've never met. Are you willing to die for their insured property? This is why pursuits are going away unless the offender is a violent offender/involved in an violent offense.

You would be surprised how often people still leave their keys in the car, or leave the engine running when the car is unattended. My city led the nation in auto theft last year. Our local police department commissioned a study to determine the primary cause of our auto theft being so high, and the results of the study showed that more than 70% of the auto thefts in our city that year occurred when the owners left the keys in the vehicle. As a result, a law was passed that makes it illegal to leave your keys in your vehicle. If you leave the keys in the vehicle and the vehicle is stolen, you can be charged with a misdemeanor that comes with a $400 fine. People still do it every day.

@@albinoman13bt That's all nice and all but there should be a standard set where a criminal is always liable for at least a basic set of damages to be claimed by the victim(s) automatically. Extra damages can still be sued over in civil court but stuff such as towing fees and damages to the car by putting it in a ditch should automatically be awarded to the victims. To be paid by the culprit who will be held at the court's jail until they do. You're mature enough to break it, you're mature enough to pay for it, or sit in a jail cell until you do pay off your debt to the citizens you victimized. True, but the state doesn't want to keep mental cases in mental hospitals because they've been defunded for decades. They prefer to just send them over to the criminal justice department and jail, but the jails don't treat their mental illness because they don't have the right resources to do so. Thus the cycle continues.

1 there is only so much room in jail for people awaiting trial, 2 innocent until proven guilty, an innocent person can be arrested twice before going to court for either, judge has to treat everyone the same... you would want the same if you were wrongfully arrested. and it happens more than you think... people have been found guilt and spent decades in prison before later being found innocent... 3 they have to offer bond except in serious circumstances. while this seems serious, and it is, in the grand scheme of things... she ranks fairly low on the criminal danger list... there are rapists, murders, child molesters, terrorists and many others I would put above her.

This new weak minded generation needs to learn you can’t blame mental health as an excuse to break the law and use it as a get out of jail free card, as soon as I heard “I want to go to a medical Center” it was pretty obvious that’s what was happening.

Why is she even out of jail? She is clearly a threat to the community and should be kept locked up until all her cases are tried and she has served her time. It should also be a LONG time considering her multiple offenses. Wish judges would do their damn job and keep people like her locked up.

Judges need to be held accountable for negligence, this is insane that they are supposed to be deeming whether or not these people should be allowed back into society with/without punishment, yet they see these bodycam videos and still decide to give them a 5th “second chance”.
@justforever96
@justforever96 Жыл бұрын
They don't decide if they are "allowed out without punishment". That comes after trial. They are usually authorized to hold a criminal in jail until trial if they feel they are a risk though. Problem is that most judges don't feel that things like theft are a "risk". Bond is not a punishment. They are also required to release in some states by law.

@@justforever96 Bonds exist to give people the punitive financial incentive to abide by their terms of release. People who cannot afford their bond are left in jail because it judged they have too little left too lose to be assured of good behavior. So, bonds are kinda "not a punishment", but in a sense they kinda are.
