The mom is a nutter. Acting like him hiding her addiction was some form of abuse. I think most loving spouses would try to hide such things from the in-laws. It’s a way of shielding your family from outside judgement. In-laws like her are insufferable and make any kind of marriage impossible. She gives me terrible flashbacks, I don’t want to wish harm on anyone, but if she happened to stumble in front of a speeding bus, I don’t think many people would be too heartbroken over it, then again I wouldn’t want the bus driver to deal with that mess, so that’s out I suppose.

Dude for real. I did a week in jail when i was arguing (not heatedly) with my wife outside when she dropped the vacuum wand (avoidance cleaning the van) started screaming bloody murder, turned on her heels and ran into the house, locking herself inside with the kids. I was outside the door. Dumbfounded like wtf…I wasn’t even upset yet. Then I hear her upstairs screaming into the phone (kiddos window was open and they were terrified) to the police that I threatened to kill her and I was beating the door down and trying to throw rocks through the window. 5 cruisers show up. See all intact windows. Door, unmolested. Me crying at the front door after seeing the cops, because I had never been so betrayed. They treated me like an animal. For a week. I had no money. No phone numbers. No underwear. Advised to just plead guilty to the judge on the little screen as I wore the psycho-Gumby suit. With sudden interruption of my psych meds. No one gave AF. If he has custody he's responsible for them. If she has them against his will he's supposed to report them as kidnapped. The school only knows that they aren't coming and that he is the parent. Generally they would have investigated and told him he needs to take steps. Both parents if they both have custody. If the kids just keep my showing up, yes they may press charges. You can't just say "well I don't have them, grandma took them" or everyone who didn't want to send their kids to school would just use that. They can't charge grandma if she doesn't have custody over them. But if he goes to court and presents evidence of what's going on they will probably dismiss the case. If he does something to resolve it. Which is usually going to court and getting a writ to get your kids back since you have to legal custody.

Hey mom, if he's such a monster to her, why did you arrange for him to care for her while you took their kids? Why not the other way around? If he's controlling and drugging her, why are you angry that he didn't pursue guardianship of her, where he would have had absolute control? You're not making sense. Stop the denial about your daughter, because it's not helping anyone.
