Today we're talking with the founder of Atlas Coffee Club, Michael Shewmake, who went from living in his parents' basement and working a corporate job at Liberty Mutual, to founding a coffee subscription service that makes over $1.6 million per month in revenue. In this video I'm going to show you the 10 basic steps he used to get there. But first? The brilliant idea.
Inspiration struck Mike at a coffee shop where he and his friend were trying to find a way to start a drop-ship company. But the spark he needed was right on the tip of his lips: the coffee!
Sure, you might think "start a coffee company, who hasn't thought of that?!" Everyone has ideas, but it's the execution that matters. And that's where Mike innovated by playing on his strengths to reach his customers others couldn't (without breaking the bank). Bidding for ad words--especially in a competitive market like coffee--can be expensive. So Mike found a way to get organic reach that actually out-performed many of his competitors by utilizing his unfair advantage: his data science background and his ability to create standard operating procedures that work.

My recent thought is to sell lemons and limes only. Not 15 different types of fruit. Because the lemons and limes just by themselves will bring in 80% of the revenue. So simply stock more lemons and limes. What are your thoughts on this? Is that the best way to think about a product company? Or are you just having additional skus to drive ultimately closer to the lemons end limes? What other way would you look at this to increase revenue? I was looking at creating some single product or duo product stores just for that reason alone. Does the Pareto Principle not apply? Your direct feedback on this is always appreciated. Ran part of a global consulting team, over 5 years moved 75% to non-USA staff, created SOP’s for all operations… what happens. Restructured out last week. My entire career has been pivots. Machine shop, Computer Aided Drafting, exploring computer networking (almost got fired for working on something during my lunch that I thought would go somewhere, MS Windows :), Security (firewalls and intrusion detection), Provisioning (Oracle, SailPoint, Okta), Implementing SaaS Workday, Leading deployments, Leading US practice, Leading Global practice)… Am I self loathing / wining / blaming my old employer now at 62 - Not a chance - Game is on again! Know this… we choose when we quit, we loose when we quit, I am pissed now, not at my past employer, no at me for giving control to someone else…and yes I do have a dam chip on my shoulder!
