Despite being a child of Kenyan coffee farmers, it took a trip to America, an MBA at Harvard and a short stint in investment banking for Margaret Nyamumbo, 36, to realize she could build a profitable coffee business while giving back to the sort of farms that raised her. In 2023, her business Kahawa 1893 sold more than $3 million worth of coffee.

Interesting that her big break into major retail came during the 2020-2021 pandemic, coinciding with the BLM movement, which pushed corporations to improve diversity by stocking more Black-owned brands. Target, in particular, committed to uplifting Black and women-owned brands by intentionally sourcing and distributing them in stores. As mentioned in the video, $2.1 million of her sales come from retail, demonstrating that Black-owned brands don't underperform due to quality but due to lack of access and equity. A tip to black owned business owners from another black person, sell products and services that can appeal to the masses. Unfortunately black business fail at higher rates because they tend to be too niche and cater to a small demographic. The truth is there are only so many black dollars that can be recirculated and to be successful long term, you have to get people from all walks of life to buy into your product. CONGRATULATIONS. My wife and I created Aqui Brazilian Coffee (most of our family is Brazilian), but my focus and passion were always on the cafe itself. We did meet with Trader Joes also, but it was my competition Mayorga Coffee that had retail distribution to Trader Joes, Safeway, Costco etc. Obviously, they roasted themselves (Columbia). Unfortunately, once you make an incorrect location decision that`s it, no matter how many special events, weekend concerts, wedding parties etc. you can pack in. Good Luck! I can see at 3:44 that you are on the best side of the street, close to your cafe so it seems like you did the location right. We also sold branded coffee from our cafe. No Regrets. Just don't become complacent like a few other African female entrepreneurs who were doing fine in IB, started their African farm product startup, raised million$ and squandered it all on expensive private jet trips, expensive champagnes & luxury vacations using VC money. (edited: & now they & their startups have gone bankrupt, completely outta business) Bootstrapping will help you farther than you can imagine and if there's any NEED to raise money remember your background & give little equity & use the funds judiciously. Ultimately pay your staff, workers & farmers well because that's what determines the quality of coffee they get you...its just like poultry farming, happy hens/chickens produce quality eggs which makes customers come back ( not saying your farmers are chickens but you get the analogy😅) &more importantly, put God first, have a relationship with the Holyspirit... much love from Nigeria.
