CS grad. not saying CS degree is any more useful than a bootcamp but it's just an easy way for companies to filter out hundreds of candidates they get in these poor market conditions. i think once the market gets better it will go back to the 'any method works'. at the end of the day experience is more important than a degree, people who got into SWE early just had better timing

I’m a SWE but I have a bachelors in Design. CS is not necessary but a nice to have.

Some comments about the data at the start. Just because somebody has a bachelors, doesn’t mean they have a bachelors in CS or a related field. Technically, somebody that got a BS in History who became a high school teacher, that later went to a bootcamp to become a SWE would still be counted in that bachelors group. So those statistics are really opaque for determining the route people use to learn programming. Also as a comparison to the 64k a year graduating from boot camps. About 60k bachelors degrees in CS are earned every year, so it’s pretty even between new CS grads and bootcamp grads for entry level roles. Now there are also som percentage of math and engineer grads that are also qualified to become SWE’s, but that number is harder to approximate.

I am a CS grad, work for a defense company as a SWE. Those are some interesting stats…..would be curious to see how many are self-taught as well, I bet the number is much lower.

I finished my Bootcamp in Aug 2022, still coding and tryna better my skills. I know things seem dim with the economy right now, but I’m thinking 2024 will be it. To any other Bootcamp grads, keep coding, at this point it just a game of persistence.

I completed my bootcamp in January and the job market is tough. Currently interviewing for QA positions.

Yes I’ve considered this as well. Seems like a tough market indeed. I’ve heard good things about starting in Customer Success Engineering as well you may look that direction.

Did not get the final message. Can you or cannot get hired if you’ve done a coding bootcamp but don’t have a degree?
@dasdasdadadadad8915 Жыл бұрын
like 1/5 chances
@ColbyJaxCodes Жыл бұрын
Definitely. About 1/4 of developers don’t have a degree of any kind. It is more difficult but you can definitely carve a path out for yourself.

This will vary depending on how favorably a company prefers their candidates to have traditional and foundational CS/CE/SWE education, but if they don’t weigh it too much it will come down to experience and projects a lot more.

Did you ever finish boot camp?

Hey. Any way I could reach out to you somehow? I don’t see an instagram or anything to message you.
