Never heard of him (Am Dutch, so country music exposure is limited to what Spotify recommends to me) But I instantly recognized the opening chord of friends in low places, might not have come up with the title straight away, but I know the song and I bloody love it. I grew up loving music, am still loving music, and I respect the heck out of Cody Johnson for standing up what he believes in without as he said it so clear, throwing mud. Reading through the comments I can't help but think "all of this hatred is what's wrong with the world." If you read to the end of what follows, good for you as I'm sure this is going to get wordy. I'm sure it will fall on deaf ears, but it's my attempt to try and inject some logic and reason into the way people think. All of these comments about whether Garth was country or whether he was the beginning of the end for "real country", you are absolutely right. He was the beginning of what we have now, but it was not because he wanted to change country music. Garth is on record talking about how much he wanted to emulate what Chris Ledoux did at his shows, which Garth got to see first hand as his opening act. He was an entertainer, and that was always his primary goal, to entertain. His goal was for people to come to his show and get their money's worth, and he understood that to do that he needed to pump up the energy in the venue. As great as "he stopped loving her today", "Hello Darlin", "Chiseled in stone", and so many other great country songs are, they simply don't inject the crowd with energy. Having a 15-20K seat arena or a 60-70K seat stadium sitting there listening to those types of songs just isn't as much "fun". Garth understood that and so he played more upbeat songs at his shows, which diverts from traditional country sounds. He has his slower songs that he puts into the show, but they are at the right moment and soon after you are back at 100 mph. He understood there was a setting for different types of songs. Those classic country songs are best experienced in a smaller setting, not an arena and/or stadium. Garth has a lot of great, slower and personal songs, they just weren't released as singles or not played at his shows for these reasons. Why is all of that important? Well at the end of the day the music industry is a business and businesses' purpose are to make money. If you have an artist that's selling 2000 tickets to a honkey tonk show or an artist that's selling out 20K seat arenas, which one is going to be more lucrative? I've been fortunate enough to see a number of country artist in concert, in different settings, and to this day Garth is still the concert by which all other concerts were measured, and I saw him after he started touring again like 6 years ago. I saw him with my brother and sister-in-law and a second time with my now wife. We all still talk about those concerts, with great affinity. Over the years I've also had the pleasure of seeing Toby Keith, Brad Paisely, Carrie Underwood, Sara Evans, Chris Cagle, Joe Nichols, Blake Shelton (these 3 were in a smaller honkey tonk setting and all were awesome shows in that setting, probably wouldn't work as well in an Arena), Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney, Lonestar, Brantley Gilbert, Jason Aldean (FGL opened for him and did a good job), Brooks and Dunn, Bon Jovi, and I'm sure some I'm forgetting. They were all great shows, and I would put Bon Jovi second on my list as far as entertaining, but none compare to Garth's concert. So the idea is studios are going to go for the one that's going to be more popular and make the most money. And there lies the problem. All of this hate on singers/bands for not playing "real country" anymore is misplaced. If we want to place that blame on someone, we all need to look in the mirror. Radios and studios are going to provide the customer with what they want, enjoy the most, and most importantly what they buy. So if you want more classic country in your daily life, support it. Share it with those you know, spread the word. If those albums start selling and get more downloads and filling Arena's and stadiums, then it's going to become more mainstream. The problem is, that's not likely to happen because it's simply not music for the masses to mass consume. People generally want to have fun and feel good about the music they are listening too rather than the sober feeling that comes with a lot of classic country. There's a lot of death, cheating, done her/him wrong, my dog died, and other heart felt stuff out there. All great songs and tributes, but it's not something people want to listen too all the time as it does get depressing. So with all of that said, why do we have to hate on each other for liking something different than what we like? Or hate on someone for providing a product that people like? Does the radio play too much "new country"? Yeah, I would agree. Does it sound like some of those Outlaw country artists we are so fond of? No it doesn't, but why does it have too? We live in an age where this type of music is readily available. We can pick and chose what we want to listen too. Why do we hate on someone like Colt Ford for creating rap music? Is "Ride through the country" a rap song that's going to appeal to someone from Detroit or Compton? Why is it wrong for me to appreciate a rap song that's describing how I grew up? Why do I have to chose one or the other? Why is it wrong for me to have Eminem on my playlist as well as Waylon Jennings? And my hypocritical statement from all of this, why bitch at all? If you don't like what's being played on the radio, then download what you want. Pull up spotify, amazon music, and a host of other ways to get music. Buy an individual song for less than $2. How about listen to what you want and stop hating on others for listening to what they want. I have no problem rocking out to Aerosmith, Theory of a Deadman, Shinedown, Black Stone Cherry, etc one day, then the next riding with my windows down singing along to Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, FGL, or Brantley Gilbert, and then the next week riding down the road fighting back tears listening to "One Hell of an Amen - Brantley Gilbert", "Keep it between the Lines - Ricky Van Sheldon", and "Just because I'm leaving - Luke Combs". So how about we take a step back and appreciate that we live in a time where we have almost instantaneous access to whatever we are in the mood to listen too, and be thankful that there are sings/songwriters/artist out there providing it for us to consume.

I read all the comments on my channel. First of all, I don't understand how this CoJo video turned into a "hate on Garth" thread (and I don't allow hate speech on my channel, I have deleted several comments) Second, I personally am a fan of Garth but my channel's purpose is to share music and have productive discussions about music, so thanks for watching and contributing to that. Like I said, if someone goes against that and harasses, I delete it. Third, well said! I agree, Garth has been one of my favorite shows ever, I've seen him 3 times (after he started touring again as I'm only 28). But Cody has also been one of my favorite shows ever, I've seen him 12 times. Honestly, the bitching about music gets old so fast, I totally agree that everyone should stop listening to music they don't like, and find music they do! Although I sort of disagree with you in the sense that red dirt and Americana and more traditional sounding music is coming back.. the pendulum is swinging back right now. There are MANY artists out there making great traditional sounding country music. And they're young too! But most people would rather bitch about what they don't like than look up these artists. It's sad. I personally still buy CDs and vinyl, but yes, preach it! It makes me sad that my CoJo video has turned into a "hate on Garth" video and I won't allow it. You nailed it on the argument I would make as well.

Old Town Road is as good a country song as most of the stuff playing on country radio over the past 10 years. Chris Ledoux has been my favorite artist since childhood and his was the first concert I shared with my 6 month daughter 23 years ago! Country music is a feeling and no one gets to tell you which songs can evoke those feelings!
