Think it's more he was in a role where he couldn't evolve in AEW. He pigeonholed himself out of the world title, didn't want to keep playing a gatekeeper in AEW and being a 16 time TNT champion and couldn't be the loved babyface he wanted to be. He needed a change. Frankly it worked out for him.

His feuds were heat feuds, he wasn't wrestling people in a ring surrounded by Orange Juice bathtubs.
