From what I can tell he just never had the wrestling bug, that need to get out there and perform. He's second generation but I guess his heart was never as into wrestling as everyone would assume it to be. Good for him though, from hearing Cody's stories about him he seems like a terrific guy, just doesn't want to be a wrestler like his dad is all.

Sorry to be that guy, but Ted Jr got caught up in a religious nonprofit scam that he later plead guilty to and currently owes the state of Mississipi $3.9 million. His brother owes ~220k and the nonprofit their father created was ordered to repay ~$720k. The department of justice is trying to seize Ted Jr's home at a $1.5 million evaluation as part of the process claiming that it was purchased with nonprofit funds.

To all the commrnts about his favorite changing, It verywell could have. As a outside spectator HBK was his favorite. Then when he started working it could easily shift. Growing up Sting WAS MY GUY, he still is, and may be the wrestler i would still go weird if i ever met (see Tallahassee meets Bill Murray).
