Club Coach here, I tell the kids to treat their tech suit like it's your "Superman Cape", when you put it on it should make you feel invincible. Therefore, if you are putting your Superman Cape on too frequently, and you possibly have some bad swims while wearing it, the tech suit may lose its "mental" powers.

I see a lot of push from parents when they are not so educated about what a swim season entails and see other team’s coaches allow their swimmers to suit up at every single meet. I think it’s a detriment to those young swimmers who learn to rely on the suit and not themselves and never get a chance to gauge their performance unsuited. It’s very prevalent in my area.

hey everyone, i come from denmark and swim at a pretty high national level and we never suit up in practice only at meet like once a month or every other month. And I'm curious, why should you regularly put on a racing suit and what does it do other that deteriorate the suit??

Also for some race suits can feel different in the water so it's nice for some swimmers to wear them to get used to them but personally I think especially for those without endless race suits that you should save it for the meets and that the meet warm up should be enough for you to come to terms with how it feels

I usually suit up once every few months. I don’t have tons of money to always buy more than one new suit per year, but racing with a tech suit is much different than racing with any other suit, both physically and mentally. I’ve never worn a tech suit at practice though, just a faster practice suit, if that makes sense

personally, what i do is for the first few weeks of getting a brand new racing suit is to wear it once to twice a week so you can get a general feel for it and stretch it out ever so slightly. of course, this is just what i do as a 13-year old swimmer, so it could be different for everyone

So hard from a parents point of view... My son is nearly 15...I'm a single mum... His coach wants him to get a new combi...this is 275€.... After 10 wears, they are really not any good.... I wear my suit (current one is Speedo) only at meets our club almost never suits up. I will wear it for the duration of the meet because I find it so much harder to get on when I'm already wet so I'll put it on dry and wear it the whole meet. Usually I can get them to last a year despite the usual 6 month lifespan. By the end they're quite thin and loose but still do what I need them to do. So usually that'll be at least 6 full weekend/multi day meets with a few one day meets through so looking at close to or more than 20 wears. I rinse them and hang them as soon as I get home and once dry they go back in their box. I'm a girl I got my first race suit at 14 but it was the cheapest one available ($220 AUD), I didn't get more expensive suits ($600 AUD) until I could pay for it myself with money I earned working. My brother also got his first race suit at 14 but his was on sale ($50 AUD) only last year at nearly 16 did he get a slightly more expensive suit and he had an Aus Age Championship qualifying time. It's smart waiting until the end of the season, after all you want the suit to be in the best condition for the championship meet. My coach's belief is that you don't need the suit to be good, it's about belief eg. you believe the suit makes you good so you swim good. Anyway point being look after the suit, stretch out its lifespan as much as possible, if it's not got holes or is see through it's still good. The suit isn't the be all and end all, save it for the major meet and maybe hold onto the old one to wear in less important situations (training, minor meets) should help increase the lifespan. Hope it's helpful.

I'm old now and only a lap swimmer, but I can tell you: sharing the locker room w/some of these poor girls who are trying to put on their racing suits isn't pretty, lol. There's no "throwing on" a racing suit for the vast majority of females. It's often a three-woman job in fact. Oh, the contortions they go through....LOL, bless their hearts.

Swim mom here, and you are 100% correct. Tech suits do not go on easily. It’s a workout and nerve wracking trying to get it on without damaging the suit ( or the swimmer! ) haha. Skin slick for the win!

Boys HS Varsity coach here. Our season is only 16 weeks long (roughly Thanksgiving to St. Patrick's Day). Outside of our conference championship and state championship, we encourage our swimmers--if they're able--to wear tech suits when they want to really race fast or hit a qualifying time, or if they're feeling a bit rough. It's never an expectation each of our kids need to buy one, but they are definitely, as we know, worth the money for performance.

From a parent who initially invested heavily in these suits, my opinion is that at Age Group level. Qualitative Training / Not Quantitative Training and a Competitive Mental Mindset is far more important than any expensive technical racing suits.. My son & others we know have technical racing suits from entry level to top end prices. Our swimmers have gotten more of their top ranked County & Regional times wearing their entry level suits (£30 to £50)🤔. They have also swam various PB’s in basic training jammers (£15 to £25) as they didn’t have enough time to change into their racing suits after warm up 😂! So is it the suit or is it the swimmer??

Tech suits are actually better than just normal human skin, therefore it is better to cover as much skin as possible. There was a period where there were no limits to the size of a suit, and the olympic teams quickly developed a full body "super suit." The full body suit was banned because of the advantage that came with the more expensive suit, and now a mens suit must be below the belly button and above the knees, which tech suits take full advantage of.

There is an additional concern. The cost of a good racing suit is . . . what? at retail in excess of US$300? Given the sport's baseline of expensive swimming pools, it's no wonder we remain a sport of richer, whiter, folks.
