Coe Inter Counties 800m 1980

Seb Coe running 1:45.41 in winning the Inter Counties Championship 800m on 26.5.1980, after winning his heat in 1:48.93 the previous day. Running solo from the front with laps of 52.9 and 52.5, and a last 200m of 26.3.
2nd was Rob Harrison and 3rd Colin Szwed.
10 days later Coe ran 1:44.98 on cinders at the Loughborough track, which was the fastest ever time on cinders at the time.

It's amazing when you think the FINISHED time of 1:45'4 was exactly what OVETT ran in the MOSCOW 800m a few MONTHS later tbe HUGE difference being OVETT went through 400m in 54,last 400m 50,6 !!!!!!!! And still the FASTEST in international and Olympics competition,,,41 YEARS LATER!!!!!!!!! With coe floundering at the back SOMETIMES in lane 3 !!!!!!!!! Even though seb set the KILOMETRE WORLD RECORD in oslo watching OVETT not only SNATCHING his MILE WORLD RECORD (3:48'80) but CRUISING to a 1500m 3;32'09 equalling SEBS time AND OVETT waving to the crowd (loosing tenths)and jogging to the line really ,,REALLY PUT THE FRIGHTNERS on POOR coe,,,,,,IMAGINE SOMEONE back in the day running as fast as echam EL g WAVING to the crowd with 60 yards to go DELIBERATELY slowing down running 3:26'0 1500m !!!!!!!!!!! No WONDER coe ran like a scared rabbit caught in the glare of a cars headlights,,,,,,,usain bolt did it when he set his first 100m WORLD RECORD in 2008 and still ran 9,68 !!!!!!!!!!!!! INCREDIBLE?? You DESTROY YOUR OPPONENT'S COURAGE,,,,,,,Coe not only had to deal with nerves in his FIRST OLYMPICS AND THE WHOLE WORLD PUTTING GOLD AROUND HIS NECK(800M) But also had to deal with a slipped disc (PAINFUL IS PUTTING IT MILDLY)which impeded him as he wasn't moving as fast and freely as the year before!!!!!!!!!!

the rivalry was really peter (genius) vs ovett (genius)....who won? probably peter tbh but i often wonder what peter could have done with ovett who pretty much trained himself. peter coe a v sporting man by the way-the first to congratulate ovett in 86 after ovetts 5000m win in the the commonwealths

Jeremy Homewood no, Snell’s 1:44.3 for 80 (1:45.1 for 880yds), was set on a grass track not cinders.

@@deano27671 Jim Ryan held the 880 yards/1500/mile / his 1:44'9 was definitely an 800 metres world record (1:44"2/1:44'3) and he DEFINITELY RAN THAT TIME ON CINDERS !!!!!!!!!!! The first to hold all three world records !!!!!!!!

Jeremy Homewood yes, he held the 880yds (1:44.9), 1500m and mile, but there was no official time keeping for the 800m, so he never officially held the 800m Word record, even though it was acknowledged as equivalent to the 1:44.3 of Snell’s. However, it (Ryun’s 1:44.9) was most definitely not set on a cinder track. It was the first track WR set on a synthetic track!

@@deano27671 Remember cinder tracks are a harder surface than red rubber tracks, which helps with speed, although its more slippy, so in the end it equals out. Cinder tracks I believe are better for sprint events simply due to the harder surface. Not saying i'm correct, just my assumptions. You have to wonder though how Snell ran so fast on those surfaces, and how Bannister broke the 4 minute mile all the way back in the fifties. Was it simply because they were better athletes, I don't think so, probably the harder surface they were running on.

The winning here time is exactly the same time ovett ran a couple months later to win MOSCOW,,,-alright ,,,,give or take a hundredth of a second,,, ran at this pace in the last 700 hundred metres in his life or death situation-1500 metres (1:33/-54 third 400_52*3 LAST 400 !!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS EXACTLY THE PACE COE RAN WHEN SETTING NEW FIGURES FOR THE KILOMETER IN OSLO 1:45'3_800m 2:13*40 1980!!!!!!!!! In 1980 coe,s swiftest 800 was 1:44'7!!!!!!!!! But could still get to 800 1:45'2 with a very ,very bad bronchial and respiratory problem which made him take antibiotics which undoubtedly slowed coe down,,, NO WONDER COE SET THAT UNPRECEDENTED TIME A YEAR LATER THAT ONLY MAN IN 40 YEARS HAS BEATEN AND HE WENT ON TO DO EXACTLY WHAT COE WAS CAPABLE OF IN THE MILE!!!!!!!!!!!! 3:43'4!!!!!!!!!
