You then brew for 4 minutes, stir, and brew for another 4 minutes (similar to Hoffman's method). Then you just remember the four 4s of French press: 1:4x4 ratio, add water and wait 4 minutes, stir and wait an additional 4 minutes.

I pour my coffee boiling directly from the metal pan on the stove directly into the french press. If I'm feeling fancy, I'll stir it up a bit. My coffee has a thermometer allergy so we don't use them. I then let it sit for whatever time period it takes for me to remember that I was making coffee. I don't have a coffee grinder. I use my $10 Target spice grinder instead. It doesn't have coarseness settings, so I eyeball it and grind until it looks like ground coffee. My whole setup costs $25.

I know you're supposed to use a coarse grind on your coffee for use in the french press but I still grind mine fine. Gives me a stronger cup, imo. Also I live at 4500 ft altitude so my water boils at 202F which makes nailing the temperature super convenient :-)

You can use medium fine ground coffee for a French press. Just don’t push the filter down at the end. Leave it at the very top of the water. Helps prevent stirring up the coffee grounds. Makes for a silky cup of coffee.

I use a small hand crank ceramic burr mill and an aeropress to make coffee in the field. it's compact and light, and honestly makes better coffee than my ancient bunn that's in my office. In a french press, 25g of med grind coffee (best that I can get from a cheap coffee grinder), 3 smashed green cardamom pods, and a small pinch of whole cumin seeds ground in a mortar & pestle. I use 212°F water, but am now going to try for the 200°F. about 10 min before I pour my first cup. I love the warmth from the cumin, and the brightness from the cardamom.

I have been using the blade grinder shown here for 2 years, it's good if you are using filters (paper etc.). I use a similar french press shown here, and it really doesn't work as well. A lot of "silt" gets through. I tried this with a similarly cheap (but laborious) hand held conical burr, and there is very clear improvement.
