Would it be a fair summary to think of infatti as "in fact" or "indeed" when being used to confirm and add emphasis to a statement but not when those English words are being used to set up a contradiction (as they could be in English)? Is the point more subtle than that?

Ciao! As you say, ‘in fact’ and ‘indeed’ are good translations for the Italian ‘infatti’. However, as you have pointed out, ‘infatti’ is not used with the function of contradiction as it is in English.
For example: ‘I thought that Palermo was in Sardinia, in fact it’s in Sicily’, in Italian would translate as: ‘Pensavo che Palermo fosse in Sardegna, invece è in Sicilia’. If you wish to find out more about this grammar point, you can listen to Coffee Break Italian Magazine, Season 1, Episode 10. Hope this helps!

Possiamo dire che è molto simile a "enfait" in francese?
@coffeebreaklanguages
@coffeebreaklanguages 3 жыл бұрын
Ciao! Actually, they are not very similar as ‘en fait’ in French can be used for contradicting, like the English ‘in fact’. Conversely, 'infatti' is normally used to reinforce a previous statement and therefore the French ‘en effet’ is more similar to 'infatti' in terms of usage and function. Hope this helps!

@@coffeebreaklanguages thank you. Yes this helps a lot. As neither french is my native language, i didn't know this difference btw enfait and en effet, so this really helped me for both languages 😊

Can we just think that it is similar to "appunto" when it is used alone just to confirm the other speeker?
@coffeebreaklanguages
@coffeebreaklanguages 3 жыл бұрын
'Infatti' is very similar to 'appunto' in the situation you mentioned. You can use both of these words by themselves, interchangeably, in order to confirm what the other speaker is saying as they both mean “precisely!” or “exactly!”. Hope this helps 😊
