at 9:10 Qc5 seemed like a nice move to check white king and triple attack the c4 pawn. when white moves his king you can choose to take pawn with queen offering queen trade or just snatch it with the knight. happy for good ol dave tho

N e3 after the bishop was stuck in corner really seemed like a winning move for black. also queen c5 check seems like very interesting to save the knight but its a bit late, white is ready to take over the wild diagonal.

Black should've checked white with his queen on C5. Then he could've captured the pawn on C4 with his knight. If Dave blocked the check with the bishop black* could capture with his queen on C4 and white could choose to trade queens.

I'm trying to get into chess (my dad used to say that to be a real Dutchman you have to be able to play chess, checkers and klaverjassen (sorry, Dutch game, don't think there is an English name for this) and although I am pretty good at checkers, really good at klaverjassen I totally suck at chess) but the more I learn from videos like this, the more boring the game seems to be. It's all these fixed moves, all these fixed patterns: if you do opening set X then moves ABCDEF are more or less mandatory with some variant going ABCD2E2F. Then there is the mid game where there are all these fixed patterns and the end game which is pretty much move your king up faster than your opponent. It doesn't seem like a very creative game yet people keep telling me that it is but if so, then why am I learning all these patterns. Can someone help me see the light here? Please keep in mind that I have already admitted that I totally suck at chess. I am trying to learn but I am losing interest simply because of all these fixed patterns.

A game decided by a simple mistake (which can happen to anyone). At 9:28 the Butcher leaves his Knight en prise. In other casual games his opponent might say "the Knight!". If Dave's game is so great why does he snatch it like his life depended on it? If black plays Qc5+ what does white have? Just don't give me this "Carlini goes wild" thing. Don't you think, in line with his frequent "good move Dave!" comments, he was just displaying the typical carlinian humour??
