As a Canadian (and Albertan), this case enrages me. I have student debt, although I have been a good student and citizen. This vile girl slit her brother's throat and killed her parents, but she barely got punished. She went on to get a free university education, and now she's living freely. I don't think this is right. She had a loving family who were trying to protect her. There's not even a history of trauma here. This is not justice!

I though about it. You see... I truly believe the love for a child does not go away after you pass on. There's even cases of the victim surviving their attacker- being that their attacker is a love one, and they find in their hearts to try to forgive and go on. Step by step. Some, that did not survive the attach of their offspring, wile dying, say to them: I love you. So, I believe that wherever the soul travels to, for a wile it still as connections with this world. And is probably, believe it or not, at peace. So it desires nothing more than everyone they loved in earth to be in peace too. To have a good life. They want the best for her. They did before, they still do after death. Its like when you pass you get this simplistic understanding of it all. Its part of the healing process to believe the murderer understood the seriousness of its actions, it is remorseful and is a good member for society. The judge saying that its shocking at first. But if you think about what it means in the big picture, is a sweet thing to say. I know the judge knows fully well what she was able to do. In details. The lighsaber her brother razed to defend himself from her... I teared up immediately. (and again I go...) Prisons are full of people that could be redeem but turn into more serious vicious criminals. One can only hope the focus on redemption that many societies take - such as Canada, does not contribute to the spread of evil. At least they are trying to turn an evil person into someone that can function in society.

It's kinda the core issue with the juvenile justice system... I don't see a way of enforcing this view around rehabilitation in that system it that isn't hypocritical. One curiosity with this case, there is a horror movie from Canada (same country where this happened) called Ginger Snaps, about a gothic girl obsessed with dark culture when she is bitten by a werewolf and her slow transformation into a relentless beast, as her younger sister tries to save her from becoming a monster. The funny thing here is that this movie was made years before this case, in my opinion that story goes much more with the personality of Jasmine instead of Natural Born Killers, since she was goth and her boyfriend conquered her by telling her that he was actually a werewolf.

I went to school with Jeremy and the way your describing him makes him look sane compared to how crazy he really is. But also Jasmine definitely had a major role to play in this. Pretty much anyone who lived here at the time thinks she feigned remorse during her incarceration to appease the judge. There was so much outrage when we learned of her light sentencing. One detail you missed was not only because of being a minor did she have a maximum allowable sentence BUT also she was too young for the provision of being tried as an adult to be enacted. Her family home sat empty for more than a decade before it got sold. One person had it briefly but on account of a door in the basement always creaking open in the night despite being firmly shut they quickly left on account of the belief of it being haunted.

Unfortunately it was expunged. One detail he didn't mention in the story was not only is there a maximum amount of years that a child can be put in prison but also a minimum age that must be met where a child in certain circumstances may be tried as an adult which she also hadn't reached. They wanted to try her as a adult to avoid the laughable minimum sentence she received but they couldn't do that. Their hands were unfortunately tied. I'm from medicine hat and went to school with Jeremy so I'm very familiar with lots of the details with this case. There was an uproar around here when ppl heard she'd be free so soon, and with a good education and clean record too.

I remember learning about this case in social studies in... I think nineth grade? It was used to help us understand what the Youth Justice Act does in Canada, and what happens when minors commit violent crimes. I remember the whole class being in shock at this case, especially because it was in our province, and many of us had been to Medicine Hat, if only in passing. Hearing about cases that happened so close to home will always be strange and bizarre, especially if they happen within my hometown, but this was the first case I'd ever heard that really startled me. I think what really threw my class for a loop was that, we were just a little older than she was when she murdered her family. Most of us were thirteen, fourteen and fifteen, and I think there was a general sense of disbelief that she could ever even consider such an act. The general opinion from everyone was that she should've had more time. Ten years for the act of murdering her mother, father and brother was FAR too little, and I think my teacher was a bit surprised by our reactions. Obviously, she was groomed and manipulated by a predator, but that doesn't excuse her actions leading up to, during, and after the act. At the very least, I'm of the opinion that she should be closely monitored, with regular in person check ins to ensure that she remains on the straight and narrow. While, yes, she was manipulated by an adult, it was still a violent act. If she was willing to go through with killing her mother, father and little brother at the age of twelve, I don't think it's unfair to speculate that she might commit a similar act of violence in the future. Honestly, this whole case was just a mess and I think the Youth Justice Act really needs to be reworked and tweaked. While rehabilitation is important, I think special consideration should be taken into account when the crime is especially brutal and violent. If any child is willing to go through with such an act, I don't think it's unreasonable to be concerned about the possibility of this happening again.

When I was 12, I remember shouting "I hate you" at my mom, but really what I meant was "I'm frustrated with you and I don't have the emotional intelligence to express this." Adrian, Jeremy most definitely will see the light of day again! Canada is absolutely one of THE most lenient countries in the world. Ther was another case of a Canadian murderer who got day release not 10 years into his’life’ sentence. I hate the ‘good behavior’ early release. Do you know how easy it is especially for men who’ve killed or viciously abused a woman to have good behavior in a men only jail, no stress, meals provided and zero access to women? That’s why so many men do the same thing or worse when they get out and start another relationship! Any violent criminal will not change unless their jail time also includes mandated counseling which at least in the US is rare!

I've read this case in my school's law textbook and a few others on Canadian laws and some textbooks have stated that Jeremey was the mastermind of the Richardson's family murder. In one account I've read, actually Jasmine had second thoughts of murdering her 8 year old little brother but Jeremey had her go through with the act anyways even holding her hand against the handle of the knife as he plunged the blade into his sternum. So the finishing blow was dealt by Jeremy and not Jasmine herself. However I would suggest finding more sources to support these accounts.

@HimikoWerckmeister It was Jasmine who sadly committed the foul act upon her sweet Brother Jacob. I know this as I spoke to Wayne Chopek who was a dear close friend of the Richardson family and said of Jasmine being the ultimate Perpetrator. Jeremy "IDIOTIC" Steinke bragged to an undercover officer (Cory Both) about committing the murders of Marc and Debra Richardson but strenuously said that he saw Jasmine taking her brother's life as he watched from the doorway as Jasmine was stabbing wildly at poor Jacob before slashing his throat. He also was boasting about the murders to other inmates when being transferred by van to prison and two sheriffs overhead the conversation and noted 📝 this all down as he was talking away, thus mentioning Jasmine Murdering her brother and not himself.
