I was living in Reykjavik at the time and was actually out that night but was home way earlier then 5am. I lived about 300 feet from where she was last seen. The crime shocked the whole country. Many Icelandics I knew had very bad things to say about people from Greenland. People should understand in Iceland a young woman out alone at 5am is not as rare as it is in the U.S.

I was watching a documentary on Netflix about the world's most dangerous prisons. One of the episode covered the Greenland's open type prison. I was shocked how high the crime is and how many women get raped, murdered. One guy told how he killed a man by dropping him in the icy waters, they were on a boat. Many similar stories were told by guys in prison. I honestly thought Greenland was a chill country ...

I had recently moved abroad when this happened after having lived in Reykjavík, as a native Icelander and not a stranger to the nightlife, this hit me hard. Refreshing every news site, facebook groups, etc. One reason being that as an expat from Iceland meeting people from other countries mentioning how amazing it must be to live in such a safe country. Birna was a classmate of mine in menntaskóli, she was a good person. Down to earth, a bit artsy and always wore sunglasses inside when hung over, making it blatantly obvious what she'd been doing the day prior. As an Icelander myself I remember just for the time she couldn´t be located and everyone were looking for her it was like holding my breath. I used to walk Laugarveg when I was her age some years ago, sometimes alone at night after a night out with friends and you´ve always feel safe, it´s Iceland !!!! But when her body was located, I cried. Will never forget when Grímur police commander appeared on national TV and told the nation her body was found and suspected a foul play, wich we all knew was the only thing that could have happened. The captain of the ship the murderer worked on, he did amazing thing by turning his ship around and imagine the true horror that Birna´s murderer must have felt when he realized that he was going back to Iceland !!!!! Fun fact, my dad works on the harbour here in Hafnarfjörður and part of his jobs is recieving ships when they arrive and giving them go ahead also and he was working that night to receive this ship, after it had left few hours before cause the captain turn it around, and all the information with it and just few hours before gave the ship go ahead and they could leave. And over the days after Birna had been missing working with police to giving them security tapes of the harbour cause that place is Watched at every corner you turn there and yebb this red car the monster rented was seen in various places doing this and that after the fact he kidnapped Birna and got rid of her. Cleaning the car and etc... He is a monster that still proclaims his innocence that piece of shit !!!! Dear Birna, fly high amongst the angles and you were a beautiful soul and no one in Iceland will never ever forget you

while nothing can make up for the loss, this case has some positive aspects in comparison to others you have covered, namely, how quick, professional and dedicated the police was, how the murderer was not a member of the community, and how Iceland came together to mourn Birna's death. It really speaks of a united community who takes each of its member's lives seriously.

I’m an Icelander and remember well when this case was ongoing, it was all people talked about. Parents were asking their daughters to be careful, not to go out alone after dark. It was a scary time and shocking to hear on the news that she had been found dead, we all held onto hope she’d be found alive somewhere. As for the sentence, the system here is trash. Criminals get away with everything, rape, murder, assault etc. Women cannot rely on the system for safety. Multiple women have come forward explaining how the system has failed them, beaten near death by a boyfriend who faced no charges and still walks free, just today I saw an article about how the system decided it wasn’t rape because it was from behind, just to mention a couple. Iceland isn’t the perfect dream country many think it is.

I remember working in Airport Parking in Keflavík (the international airport) when this happened and we were told to look for a red, rental car with a specific number plate. Everytime we saw a red car, we made sure it wasn't the one we were looking for, before letting it get out of sight. I think the most scary part of all this (to me), is that she was kidnapped on the same street I'd been walking on down town in Reykjavík around the same time and her phone's last signal was literally around the corner from where I lived in Hafnarfjörður. I remember watching the story on the news next to my dad on the sofa, and he hugged me tight knowing, that this could've been me. Absolutely horrible thing that happened to her, I feel for the ones she's left behind. May she rest in peace ❤️

That's so scary. I have been to Iceland and I had two drunk Icelanders who had made their own drink, try to get me in their house. They knew I was a tourist and I had literally just come out from the airport. I think they target young women. I refused and went on my way. I carry personal alarms, whistles and I even have a personal alarm on my wrist. I often have problems walking alone, but whenever I am with my bf absolutely nothing. Just being alone seems to be a trigger for men and some women.

I personally don't carry any sort of alarm with me, as usually they'll stop bugging you if you stand your ground or if you reach out for strangers help.

I know you posted this 7 months ago, but I’m just stumbling across Adrian’s (Coffeehouse Crime) videos now. I like a lot of true crime channels, but some of them can be too jovial. One in particular (I’m sure it’s obvious who) tends to be too jokey jokey for my taste. Definitely not trying to put any other channels down at all, I just love how Adrian seems to genuinely care about the victims in the cases he covers. It doesn’t come across as fake or forced. It’s kinda nice to hear human empathy when presented with such sad and gruesome details in these cases.

I don't know about the captain but Grímur Grímsson is quite the guy. He is very calm and chill AF. You have to realize that the nation had never experienced anything like this and was in total shock. News conferences were held and Grímur literally became like our dad, trying to console us while being utterly professional. It was amazing to watch. He was nominated Icelander of the year and last year many wanted him to run for president. But we have a great president and Grímur just thought it ridiculous 😉

I love how you handled this story with respect and just plain facts. We don't have many murders here in Iceland, in fact for the last thirty four years there have been 7 gunshot murders. I agree that the punishment for crimes here are ridiculous, especially in sex crimes, one or two years if there is a guilty verdict (they are more often not guilty).

@@Celisar1 Generally women are treated with full respect and towards the law we are all equal, also LGBT etc. But sadly patriarchy is still strong among the judges, politics and the police and it takes a sadly long time to get rid of them. Sex crimes here seldom go to court and if a sex offender is found guilty, the penalty it is almost a joke and more often suspended. That is not only if the victims are are women also men and children.

Yes, sex crimes are not given enough sentences in Finland either. It is absolutely crazy! As often the woman/child/man is horrendously terrorized and never forgets. It changes the life of those and sometimes results to suicide of the victim. In that reason I think that the sentences should reflect more of "attempted manslaughter", because perpetrator never knows how the victim recovers, if they ever recover.

​@@riggs20 Do like we did with my friends: we slept in a corner of the club LOL Some of our friends wanted to stay, we wanted to go because we were exhausted... even though we were exhausted we stayed, sat in a corner nearby our dancing friends, some of us half sleeping. And when our dancing friends got enough, they came to us and we all went back together. Back in college, we always walked everybody back home. We'd all go back together or split in two different big groups, we made a lot of big detours to make sure to take back home the drunkest ones first, and then bit by bit we split up until. At the end, it was usually a few guys left who didn't drink much (only a few beers), were used to the city and walked through every corners of it constantly, so they knew which paths were the safest ones. My city isn't too dangerous despite being big but there's still always a possibility. I remember once I told one of those guys "Oh, we just live a few streets away so we're fine, you live in the opposite direction, right ? You should just go straight back home, it's so late already" and the guy just wouldn't have it, he walked my friend and I back to the building, made sure we went safely inside, and then left. I'm glad I've almost always met people who are like that, who always make sure everybody goes home safely. I also have a friend and her friends who had to "walk" a drunk girl back home from far away because she was a very aggressive/violent person when drunk. She kept insulting them, hitting them, and didn't want them anywhere close. So they just followed her down the streets until they saw her get back home safely. It takes a lot of selflessness to still care about someone like that despite the fact they've hit, scratched and insulted you for a part of the evening, imo. A lot of people would just be pissed off and be like "Whatever, she does whatever she wants to, she's a big girl, not my problem anymore."

That is tragic, how horrible to drown in a freezing water, I nearly suffered a similar fate in New Zealand during a surfing incident and remember feeling powerless to the cold and had in my mind already given up, only moments after getting thrown off my board. It is a horrible experience and incredibly heartbreaking way to die. It’s literally one of my worst fears to drown in freezing cold water like that. I hear it’s brutal. I actually heard about a case not that long ago where a Canadian girl committed suicide by throwing herself into freezing water to drown herself (in a Canadian winter!) and it really struck me. I just thought “God why would anyone CHOOSE to die like that?!” Horrible.

scary realization for me while watching this was that I’ve done that same “drunk 3am walk” home many times before, not through a well lit shopping center with other people, but through unlit neighborhoods alone. This really makes ya realize how dangerous that is to do, and also is a strong reminder that Uber is a thing and way cheaper than losing your life..

Uber and taxi drivers have also raped and murdered people. There is always a risk. Walking isn't always the worst by far. The biggest risk to you as a woman is your spouse or sexual partner. Most women are murdered in a domestic violence situation by men they know and love. This girl in Iceland wasn't murdered by walking alone. She went to a bar with another woman, met some guys and got in their car where things went south. Her walking alone is immaterial to the situation.

He's a Greenlander so he would presumably go back to Greenland, which is even smaller. But yes, Iceland's maximum sentence is 19 years, which may in part be because it's a small community and everyone remembers when a major crime is committed.

Adrian, Just recently tuned in and subscribed. A fan of many non-fiction crime shows and yours is of very high quality in my estimation. In this episode you began with the big picture, the country, then the victim’s life pre-crime. The custom of wandering the streets at all hours in a state of inebriation, unthinkable in most metropolitan cities today, made some sense as you described the unheard of crime which occurred in that previously relatively safe area. Excellent use of video throughout to illuminate the story. Gratifying work by police and Coast Guard to find the missing girl and prosecute the case. As a former mariner, my husband was pleased to hear of the vessel Master’s conduct, which cut bureaucratic red tape and allowed arrest in Icelandic waters. All worked as it should, right up to the sentence. Your opinion on the brevity of that sentence was spot on. Congratulations on successful building of your site and all the best going forward.

Could not agree more, yet in nordic countries they do not believe in punishment in the same way as americans do, also they have way stricter laws as to how police can interogate people and children, so they do not manipulate people into confessing and thus as in the US fill the prisons with innocent people for crazy sentences af 3 times life.. the juridicial system in the US is only for people with money, power or the right skincolour..

I mean, Europe still has a better track record of violent crimes than the US and the rates of re-offending are smaller - most of it is down to our belief that prevention and rehabilitation in human conditions is the way to go. Is 19 years the equivalent of the lifetime she had left? Probably not. Is it little time? No. His crime doesn't really compare to many that we see on this channel and while a life lost is always a life lost no matter the way, he is not the most deranged person out there. It is possible that he can be rehabilitated. If drugs were also involved then he could have lifted that it played a part and the fact that she died not directly "at his hands" but by drowning would probably change how the charges where classified. It may be hard to understand if compared to life sentences being thrown left and right but that's the way we chose to do things.

I’m an American living in New Zealand and a lot of the sentences handed out here are pathetic, especially for child abuse that ends in murder. I prefer much longer prison sentences for murder and rape, but the reality in the USA is that you have to keep building prisons when felons get life sentences. I don’t agree with the current “reform” being undertaken because it is focused on criminals and not victims. I believe that very heinous murders (with premeditation, serial or repeated killing, kidnapping, torture, sexual violence and similar additional crimes) deserve death or life without parole (lwop). Murder in the commission of another crime (carjacking, burglary, gang violence, etc.) should be 25 - life with or without parole depending on the circumstances. Child sex trafficking, child porn production, child porn downloading and sharing should also be 25 - life with or without parole. Various other felonies that directly impact lives, such as aggravated stalking, repeated violent assaults, and kidnapping should attract sentences from 15 - 25 years followed by probation for 1 - 5 years. Other felonies can attract increased sentences if a person continues to reoffend. There needs to be balance.

Interesting choice of case. We moved to Iceland from Ireland in August 2016 and this happened not long after. It affected my wife quite deeply as things like that do not really happen here. It was a huge incident for what is a very small capital city. That said, we are both still here, nearly 5 years later and have no intention of moving.

Why did Thomas do it? I could guess discontent with his lot in life, trying to take something that he thought he could never have but deserved. On the sentencing... The American judicial system has never settled the argument of whether incarceration is purely punishment as retribution or punishment with rehabilitation. I hate the fact that the men in these cases think they have the right to exert force on these women, showing no respect for their victim's rights or life, and then when they get caught they become cowards who hide behind the legal system which they believe they are entitled to protect their rights and life. If you take a life like that surely you forfeit your right to live in the community!

But they ARE entitled to being protected. They still have the same rights. A judical system that is built on revenge doesn´t bring you far. Don´t think like a lynch-mob. Human rights are a thing these days and everybody is entitled to them and nothing what they do could change that. But I know it is hard for people who grew up in this revange-mindset to believe, that judical systems that are built on rehab instead of revange produce lower crimerates and happier societys. Ofcourse there is often more to it, but it is a big factor.

Yea, I think by some estimates there are well over 50 serial killers walking free and untouched in the USA at this very moment, and the number of unsolved cases perpetrated by serial killers numbers in the thousands and that do not even count the hundred thousands of missing individual each year, many of them likely victims of serial killers that are probably body parts and pieces lying in a freezer or buried somewhere by these sadists. While statistically it's very rare to be a victim of one, it's horrific if you are a victim of one, especially many of these serial killers love to torture their victims, I have read many cases and the worst is not even Jefferey Dahmer who get sexual satisfaction from dissecting his victims, preserving their heads and using it as a sex toy, and eating his victims body part, or living with the remains of his victims, and several macabre killers like him, and it gets progressively worst to torture killers like dean corll and John Wayne Gacy, who may not like sleeping with victims body parts but instead like torturing and mmaking his victims fear. The worst are those less known killers as in the case of one New York Serial killer who kept his victim chained up in his basement for months and whose only purpose apart from sadistic sexual pleasure is to see how long he can keep his victims alive while completely restrained and under extreme torture, and every single day tortures them, like electrocuting them, slicing off bits and pieces of their body, slicing of their nipples and penis, and not letting them die but suffer in pain for months, those type of serial killers are worst than Dahmer, and they are always usually caught by a degree of luck like one of his victims escaping. So the chance is low but if you are caught by one, your death will be horrific and it will be hell on earth for you.

Thing is its not only men, there are also women that murder. Like the lesbian couple that murdered like 6 kids and commited suicide

I appreciate that this case is one I hadn’t heard of. I’d like to suggest another obscure case, one that is close to my heart since I am friends with the victim’s brother. Margaret “Mae” Sweet was killed in 2008 and the case is still unsolved. I can get you a way to get in touch with her brother Paul if needed; he would love for anyone to cover the case and I’m sure would be happy to tell you anything you needed to know in lieu of online information. I appreciate your respectful tone and think you would handle spreading awareness of Mae’s case very well. Regardless of whether or not you cover it, keep up the good work!

I went on a school trip with a few classmates to Iceland right when this case began happened. We were staying in a hotel in Reykjavík and none of us ever went out alone after that. This was so scary and I cant imagine the fear she had to have been in. My heart broke for the family and as a group we actually went to that walk. It was very heartbreaking, but wonderful that the community got together to honor her. This is actually the first time I have seen someone covering this case. Rip Birna bless her family
