i think the lawyers dragging her sexual life infront of her family, friends, and a court room is evil and disgusting, all to defend a man who was CLEARLY guilty. he was arrested standing covered in blood over a woman who was stabbed 219 times. i get that everyone should have legal representation but at that point why would you, as a lawyer, drag the victim like that.

At the time of the trial her name really was dragged through the mud. But refreshingly, the public were not buying it. Everyone just saw his as a creep that was saying vile things about the amazing young woman he murdered. It was upsetting for his family though, and after the trial her mum spoke out about how much of what he said was simply not true and Sophie was indeed a much better person and a higher achiever than he could ever hope to be. Sadly this is something that gets brought up endlessly in both murder cases and rape cases. The defense has nothing so they make the victim out of the abuser/killer by highlighting the supposed sexual immorality of the victim. After all. if she's a slut she's asking for trouble and a guy can't be blamed for thinking no means yes, or for snapping when she wounded his ego by sleeping with other men. It's incredibly backwards thinking and has no place in society in 2022.

He didn't deserve her. It hurts me to see that such a beautiful, bubbly, gorgeous and charismatic girl's life was taken away. He is a loser. He should have been proud and grateful to have such a beautiful , gorgeous and understanding partner like her. God create women to be loved, adored, and taken care of like a delicate flower. I know that relationship always goes both ways, both partners needs be loyal, faithful, understand each other. But just by looking at this case ,the way he discouraged her after she got her first job in treasury, he was totally a loser. Instead of encouraging her to have a successful career, he gets jealous and threatened her. Such a coward, stupid, loser guy..... And she glows like a flower. Her smile can light up everything around her and makes everyone happy around her.

About as much as anyones sexual history has to do with anything. I think the lawyer may have been implying that she slept around to taunt him. But it doesn't work if the sleeping around happens when your split up. I had an ex that broke up with me, and got pissed off that I hooked up with another woman, after the break up. She thought that breaking it off with me was a punishment and that I would beg to have her back. Instead I thought bullet fucking dodged. This is a sad one though, cause she was in the clear gone, new life then er mom not knowing better brought the monster back in and she died one of the most horrifying deaths someone can die.

If you find yourself in a toxic relationship, find the strength to leave. Having been through a couple the past few years myself, it’s best to just walk away. One was straight up toxic and we brought out the worst in each other arguing all the time, the other strung me along for months until she cheated on me and broke it off trying to pretend she did nothing wrong and trying to stay friends with me until I discovered the truth and cut her out for good. Luckily it didn’t get worse, it fucking hurts but at least it’s over and done with. Staying with someone not good for you is so damaging and hurtful emotionally and mentally. When you see red flags, run and don’t look back.

The biggest lesson from this case was to illustrate how dangerous it was when she DID leave. He used a defense in court called "provocation" which was supposed to reduce his culpability for murder. Essentially, his argument was that she knew he was a narcissist and had provoked him by ending the relationship. Normally that defense would be used by someone who has beaten someone to death they caught fiddling their child, for example. It was an absolutely disgusting use of that defense, and that particular defense was removed from the Crimes Act afterwards, if I remember rightly.

Hi from New Zealand! Just to add, Sophie’s mum died a few weeks ago from Parkinson’s and the charity she set up was shut down in 2019 as her disease made it too difficult for her to continue with. I just lost my best friend on November 30, 2022 because of her jealous ex. He couldn't handle she was moving on from their relationship that ended in April 2022 due to a situation he created for himself. Yet, like a typical abuser, he blamed her for the end of it. He told people it ended because she was cheating on him (she was not and that still wouldn't have been near as bad as what he said that ended their relationship) and yet he was the one buying pictures from O.F. He would text me if he couldn't get ahold of her on the hour every hour "Where's MY wife!" and when I would tell him I hadn't seen her he would then call my husband to see if he could catch me/her in a lie, he didn't realize my husband is 100% on my side and saw through his abusive, possessive bs too. When we would hang out (before the wedding) and play games like "would you rather" he would always "shoot his way out" even if there wasn't a need for firearms. If he came up with a W.Y.R. it always had a firearm involved. For their wedding he wanted "B.Y.O.F." Bring Your Own Firearm. He was obsessed with them. Guess how he killed my friend? That's right, he shot her. Then he shot himself and died too. I feel comfort in knowing he ended his life. His soul will never know peace and my friend's soul goes on to her version of eternal peace. Ultimately, I miss my friend and I wish her children had their mother still.

I thought the same thing! However, there’s a lot of ppl out there who would sympathize with him for being cheated on so many times. And anything else they can say to make her look bad makes it seem like he’s a victim as well. They’re basically trying to paint the picture that she drove him to snap and lose it one day. While that’s obv not an excuse for murder, it makes a lot of ppl more understanding esp if they’ve been cheated on or abused and wanted revenge. But ya, it’s a common theme that defense attorneys do, cuz ppl tend to SLIGHTLY sympathize with a killer if the person they killed was their abuser. It’s sad tho cuz the victim isn’t there to defend themselves 😢

I still could not believe why her mother let her daughter's abuser back into the house after hearing what he had done to her daughter on the previous encounter! Bad decision Mom!!

Exactly... I would never have opened that door to this jer🤬 But... He wanted to kill her and unless she had moved very far away, he would have killed her... It was a matter of time... The only way to escape these crazy people : - Go far away with no trace - Make them believe your dead If not, sooner or later, you're dead.

Sophie let him in and took him upstairs to her room. But very few people actually expect someone can be insane enough to commit murder. Most of us survive on TRUST.

Omg I was about to send you a message asking you to cover this story! As a New Zealander, this horrible crime cut me deep, in fact one of my best friends played rugby with her murderer in Otago Uni... he was always weird, narcissistic and a loner. She was a beautiful mind and such a soulful girl... even her beloved cat Kade couldn't live without her. Thank you so much for covering her life and story so delicately, greetings from Christchurch, New Zealand xoxo.

This isn't any average man, this man had very clear and strong mental issues and red flags. He's never been mentally stable since childhood. It's also way more complicated them him just being "upset." This man was already on edge and could snap at any moment for any reason with or without her.

I have to pause and giggle at Adrian's obvious dislike of this man. Adrian has such a calm way of speaking and seems so objective that it catches me by surprise when he throws some shade. :) One of the many reasons I keep coming back to this channel. I’m glad you’re sharing this story. Women are expected to be polite, accommodating, understanding and supportive to their own detriment. And if she’s not, it’s all her fault, as the defense, once again, tried to portray.

Women get with men that abuse them, ignore the good guys and then blame all men for their poor choices. They cheat, they lie, they hate and then blame men when there is backlash. This man was a piece of crap, I'm not defending this trash that should have gotten the death penalty but to equate him to other men is an evil and stupid thing to do. Your prejudice and sexism doesn't help the world, it only creates more people just like him. Anyone, man or woman should live a life of dignity and respect for others regardless of their gender, skin color or religion. We should strive for peace with each other and treat everyone with love. We should live a life of morals and not lie and cheat. If the man were the one killed and he had cheated and this was the same defense I bet you wouldn't say a word about it. You don't care if the same thing happens to a man do you? Because these kinds of defenses are used against men as well to portray them as the problem when they were the victim as well. I've seen a lot of cases and the same thing happens to both genders. Only a sexist makes it about the sex of the person. You need to look at yourself and evaluate why you hate good men for what bad men have done and if you want men to blame you for what bad women have done.
