In this video, we are going to talk about the Coffin Corner.
If you stay until the end I will show you with the simulator how an Airline Pilot recognise that he/she is flying into the coffin corner.
The Coffin Corner is the point at which your High-Speed Buffer and your Low-Speed Buffet coincide.
In order to understand this phenomenon, we need to talk about what happens to your stall speed and your Maximum Mach Number (MMO) with the increase in altitude.
Since the local speed of sound (MACH 1) expressed in knots decreases when temperature fall this means that at high altitude your MMO will a slower knots speed compare to the mean sea level one.
The opposite is true to you stall speed True Air Speed, because the Air Density decreases with the altitude so you need to fly faster in order to keep flying, thus your stall speed will increase.
When your High-Speed Buffer or MMO decreases to the point where meets the low-speed buffet (that has increased due to higher stall speed) you have a problem called coffin corner because if you accelerate you will Overspeed and if you slow down you will have the pre stall buffet.
If you find yourself in this scenario you need to watch very closely your Indicated Airspeed or descend to a lower altitude.
If you want to learn more about mach number watch the following video:
• Mach To Knots: Why Do ...
If you are curious to know what the Critical Mach Number is watch the following:
• Critical Mach Number E...

@@PILOTCLIMB Sir, just curious.. if I have any questions related to ATPL, can I post my queries to you whenever? As I am starting my cadet next year hence I am prepping it earlier on my own and if I encountered any questions.. not sure if there could be any one on one kind of sessions for this?

Really nice explanation. I wonder if you could explain as well how would we get out from that? As if we try to descend with a constant mach number our IAS is gonna increase therefore we’re gonna end up in the high speed buffet

Hi Captain, great videos with nice explanations. One question thought, what could be the worst situation? Entering the high speed or the low speed buffet situation and stalling the aircraft?

During the cruise flight, you experience some heavy turbulence due to jet stream. Basically, you decide to descent to a lower level where you can have some more room between de high and low speed buffer?
@PILOTCLIMB
@PILOTCLIMB 2 жыл бұрын
great question, it depends but 90% of the time it's better to descend for the reason you mentioned.

hello captain! what happens if we didnt do anything is it going to stall? is there any chance of recovery once it enters stall?
@PILOTCLIMB

Hey, if you don't do anything the Aircraft will send you some signals warning you that the Aircraft is about to stall.. if you still don't do anything, the Aircraft will stall, which should be recoverable by applying the Stall recovery maneuver...

Theoritically it would appear the recent 737 crash in China may have been caught in the high speed coffin corner. What are you thoughts on the possibility? I believe aircraft manufacturers have calculated the coffin corner altitude for each aircraft and recommend you stay at least 3 to 4,000 feet below. The reports say the 737 was about 29,000 feet, but we do not know anything about weather or tail wind. Short of airframe or mechanical issues, coffin corner seems to be possible. Thank you for this presentation.
