@druid799 I agree completely. Idk if you’ve watched any of the Tyrell Knifeworks YT makers’ challenges. But some of those competitors do more work with angle grinders and 2x72 grinders than a forge. It was awesome to see someone actually swing a hammer

That'll open some thing that goes EEK! then Thud :) I would have made it with a full exposed tang and brass pins. But looks like you did a good job. I use Birchwood Casey super blue on blades. I'm glad too see I'm not the only one who uses leather dye on wood.

Having used leather dye for the wood, if you now add some ebony dye Followed by a few coats of Danish oil, you would have some marvellous grain patterns! The knife looks beautiful! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

Your forging style and end results are to me more closely to what they had going back 200 yrs. or so. So natural looking but very effective surely. I do not like knife channels that have heavy machinery that does all the work or makers that try to reproduce machine made work. I love the natural patina, forge markings etc.

If they're handmade/custom knifemakers (that make their entire knives themselves) then trust me there's no heavy machinery that does all the work for them! Even a cnc machine for such makers is awhooooollllle lot of manual work well as all the programming and setting up and a tonne of learning. But if by chance someone invents a machine that can do the handsanding for me at, count me in lol! 😀 But to each their own. Personally I don't hold to their view though. For one, handmade doesn't have to mean substandard. Rather should mean the opposite in many cases. Basic tool jobs are cool and all... it's how I started too. And still like just hand files are one of my favourite and most used tools. (Though I've got awhole lot more of them now and alot of moneys worth haha. Love good files.) But having good equipment that can help deliver higher quality results are only plus' in my book. (Though I'm not saying you can't get good results with basic tools. You can sure. For the most part.) I think basic tool jobs tend to inspire alot of beginners or noobs to the craft especially. As it makes it seem more achievable for common folk without huge investment or years of experience and learning. I been there but tbh alot of people change their tune as they advance. Anyway it's all good long as "eet veel kat"! 😉😀

When your doing guards what I like to do is get them to just about fit then put the guard on then slide a piece of pipe over the tang and smack it on

Good work bro. Big fan of bowies . And like the wild cutting demo at the end. You went all out on that one haha. And she performed aa well as you did. Well done. You're getting up their bro, getting good. :) I like your sheath too, I enjoy my leather work sometimes more than knifemaking. Right into for awhile, all advanced carving and tooling and drawing own patterns etc... it can be a rabbit hole haha. Fyi I think at that stage a good set of hardness testing files could be a good investment for you and could get alot of benefit out of them for relatively little cost. Use email alot throughout your heat treat process well as elsewhere and should help accurize and refine it well as learn alot too. (I've got a good benchtop Tester now but still use them quite abit) Anyway it's just my humble opinion take it or leave it.

What kind of anvil is that? I dig it. I also use pretty bare bones equipment to forge. Basically whatever I can make myself. so I enjoy watching others who do the same. Very slick looking knife as well.

Thanks Cody! The anvil is a piece of unknown steel from my uncle's machine shop. It's got good rebound though, the rectangle shape works great for blades, I've heard Japanese swordsmiths use anvils shaped like this.

Do you mean like how to use a piece of angle iron as a bevel jig bro? For grinding even symmetrical bevels on a belt grinder? It's pretty easy man, bout the easiest quickest bevel jig you can make. Basically there's a couple main ways to do it. First if like mine you've got a universal or an angle adjustable (vertical) worktable on your grinder (both very handy accessories to have btw) you can just drill a bunch of holes in the face of your angle iron/jig (for accomodating various knife dimensions) and use some sort of bolts or screws to mount the blade to that appropriately.... some for the blade to sit on, some through the pin holes if has them (full tang etc) o however you have to so it's on their solid and straight etc. Uh then it's about done. You just have to set the angle of the worktable up in relation to the 90° of the jib so that's its the right angle for your bevels then slide it across the table as you grind to get your bevels. You can start on a lesser angle and gradually increase it as you go till you get to the height/angle you want it.... or just start at the final angle and grind away till it's all flush. Fyi: if you have or can buy or make a "file guide" tool ,like for getting orerfectly flush even shoulders on a hidden tang knife for the guard (very handy little tool indeed, especiallyhard like carbide-faced file guides) you can fit that to your knife thn put it on th jig so you know exactly where to start the plunge line each side and can't grind go past that mark to get nice even straight plunges both sides. Oh and a little digital angle box is an excellent and relatively cheap little tool for setting the angles for it on worktable etc easy and quick and exact. Well as for setting all sort of angles for other tasks. The other variation is if haven't got an adjuable worktable or just refer it like drilling a couple holes on either side of the bottom of your angle iron to put some larger nuts and bolts that you can screw up or down to move the angle of the jig up or down to get the right angle for the bevels like that. Then use as begire. Anyway idl if it helps and I'm sick of typing haha but probably best to read up or watch a yt video on making them if want to. Or buy a good jig. I've got an awesome on that came with an awesome file jig too that fits into it. Or better yet imho, learn to freehand grind your bevels! Takes abit to get the knack of it I know and you'll wreck many first but worth it.

Two things I would have done differently than you: I would have put the brass plate BEHIND the guard, not the front. I would use sharper bits to avoid the small deviations in the holes that resulted in the loose guard. I could also hammer the blade a little closer to the tang to push the guard back and avoid using the brass shim. A suggestion: watch out for the winds outdoors. They cause blade warping when taking them from the fire to the oil. Put the oil can closer to the fire. But I think your knives are fantastic. Congratulations. Gaucho knives

I temper in the oven for controll. I go for (and get) the golden straw color consistently.
