I had a lot of guilt with meat consumption when I was an omnivore and just lied to myself because I thought the difficulty of being vegan outweighed the benefits of being conscious of the suffering and holding myself accountable. I went vegan. I feel so much better in myself. Don't get me wrong, being vegan where I live isn't easy but stopping lying to myself is so much better. I feel like my conscience is clearer. Karoline I know what you mean. When I was vegetarian (about 15 years ago) I wasn't at ALL educated on the dairy industry and I would eat eggs from uncaged hens. I thought it was enough. It really wasn't. I just didn't know. Now I do. I think dairy is almost worse than beef. Just unreal cruelty. At least most people know they're eating an animal carcass if they're eating beef. They don't consider so much with dairy. Just heart breaking

venusstardustkyojin When I was about 15 I tried being vegetarian but let others convince me to eat meat again. I actually shut my conscience off everytime I ate meat because I thought I needed it to be healthy. I grew really fast at that time so I was underweight and had really low blood pressure which made everyone around me believe I had an eating disorder and just to "prove" it to them i stuffed my face with so much disgusting fast food. I'm really ashamed that I let the disapproval of other people mess with my own morals back then. As soon as I found out I didn't need that shit I went vegan over night and had no regrets ever since. :D

Two other very prominent strategies for coping with Cognitive Dissonance is: - Forcefully assigning negative (and often untrue) characteristics and attributes to the event/information that is causing your Cognitive Dissonance. "Vegans are skinny and don't get enough vitamins" or "Vegans are so annoying, I'm not listening to them shove their stuff in my face", "Vegan food is WAY more expensive", etc. The event/information becomes less potent for you so you have an easier time disregarding it. - Artificially downplaying the severity or weight of the other argument/event/information so that it becomes on par or even worse than your current point of view. "Plants have feelings too [so killing animals is now okay]" or "There are vegans who die from their diet [therefore it is worse] is so it is not as good of a diet".

It took me a long time but even as a vegan I still kept buying hygiene products that may have been not CF and vegan cause I was afraid of overpricing. I regret not looking deeper and finding out some stuff isn't that obscure to find and it's actually a good price competitive to mainstream products but my focus was mainly meat, eggs, dairy, honey and basic clothing which is most easy for newer vegans. I found out nearly all mainstream brands test on animals and now I have no excuses, plus it's more eco friendly anyways.

I just want to thank you for this video. As a social psychologist, I've been trying to explain this for quite a while, sometimes it takes a lot of time to explain this to people, now I can just refer them to the video. Moreover, this is a very important insight on how we should phrase and shape any type of activism or message promoting a vegan diet. Many people who advocate for a vegan diet think they are doing something good when they are actually reinforcing people's (meat eaters) belief that what they are doing is the right and better thing. Unfortunately this seems to be the case far too often, being more harmful than good.

I'm 15, and vent vegan a few months ago. I recently came back into contact with a friend of mine who is an adult, and a vegetarian. He is a nutritonest. He asked me where I got my protein. I reacted badly, not realizing that he was actually looking out for me, making sure that I wasn't only eating rice and pasta (which knowing me, I might've assumed too). But he later said that he was kind of joking, but also seriously wanted to know I was being healthy. I guess when a nutritionest asks where you get your protein they're probably not doing it out of close-mindedness (I actually gave hum a recipe for my protein-laden ginder, peanut butter, jelly, and chia seeds pancakes!)

Thanks Mic!! You are so good at putting into words what I feel but cannot describe. I lived with this dissonance for years and it literally made me sick. Also when people want to question or criticise veganism I feel that they are actually almost taking the first step towards an awareness: they pretend to love animals but contribute to the torturing and killing of innocent loving beings. So this anger towards vegans is kind of misdirected and it is really anger towards themselves. Anyway, keep up the good work. I need my daily dose of Mic the Vegan :-)

When I talk to people about my diet, I always tell them that I feel much better about myself because I knew I deep down felt guilty. I tell them I feel much better not eating animals and knowing I do not support their torture and the effect it had on nature. I tell them that maybe other people don't feel responsible, but that I do, and that I'm taking my responsibility. I tell them I feel healthier, and that it's not that hard to do because my mind is more at ease. People never respond by attacking me then, they are mainly silent or say it's good I stand for my beliefs.
@phasespace11567 жыл бұрын
This is IT, right here. LOVE this video. I try to keep in mind, when talking with non vegans about my life choices, that it took me YEARS to acknowledge my own cognitive dissonance and do something about it. I didn't become vegan overnight because someone pointed out my logical fallacies, and neither will anyone else. I just keep not eating animal products and not dying. That negates ninety percent of their arguments right there.
@99sins7 жыл бұрын
phase space hard to argue when you're dead at 50 from cancer, chronic disease, Alzheimer's... yeah that's where it gets hard for me because I still wouldn't enjoy the idea of letting someone die a slow, painful and early death just because "these fuckin' vegfags".
@phasespace11567 жыл бұрын
Kaweta I don't enjoy the idea either. I don't WANT people, or animals, to suffer needlessly. I think it comes down to a basic moral and political question: am I, knowing what I know about all the health benefits of being vegan and the suffering of millions of sentient creatures, morally obliged to be outraged by people who don't want to agree? A part of me screams YES!! Animals are being murdered, and people are dying. What kind of person would I be if I said or did nothing? A part of me also knows that people won't hear what they aren't ready to hear. The first step is admitting you have a problem, as they say, and until then all I can do is hope that living by example is enough to get at least a few people to start their own journey. That being said, loud voices start conversations, so there's a place for everyone in this fight.

Interesting ultimatum. Rising ocean temperatures, melting polar ice caps, and rising ocean levels are known contributing factors to extreme weather events such as hurricanes that have been displacing people for over a decade (we just don't hear much about it in North America, but islands in the south pacific are disappearing...) and occasionally causing death and destruction. Animal agriculture is one of the leading causes of climate change and is therefore a direct factor. Animal agriculture also has many other negative effects on your fellow humans (contributing to world hunger, PTSD in slaughterhouse workers, causing lifestyle disease/reducing life "health-span", etc). To learn more check out Mic's other videos and other documentaries such as Cowspiracy, Before the Flood, An Inconvenient Truth, Forks Over Knives, etc. Re: the environment though.... Climate change is real, it's scary, it's happening fast, and the BIGGEST effect you can have immediately is removing animal products from your diet. Hope this helps :)

Why do you need 100 reasons to go vegan? 99 is enough, methinks
@tamcon727 жыл бұрын
Yes. Also, please go vegan, as it's better for everyone and easier to be plant-eater in an emergency situation(tinned beans and fruit and veg + bread is cheap, non-perishable, and pretty nutritious). Lastly, stay safe in the coming storm: Make sure your emergency kit is stocked, and that you have a week's worth of potable water. Good luck.

King Rey thats a myth. It's all natural. Animal agriculture is not linked to big things like this. That's like saying animal products are linked to disease

"I just don't think I could ever give up eating burgers...they just taste so good." I became a vegetarian a few months ago, and have already noticed a huge difference in how I feel. It was hard at first, but I do plan on going full vegan. 😊 My mom's cognitive dissonance is insane when people bring up the fact that meat comes from animals. She won't even eat meat that has bones in it, because she doesn't want to accept the fact that she is eating a dead animal's carcass. I'm never disrespectful towards her for eating meat because I ate meat all my life until I recently made the change to vegetarianism. I just give her little facts of all the health benefits that go along with cutting meat out of your diet every now and then. After changing my diet I look at my dog and cats, and I couldn't imagine ever eating an animal again. 💔😭

This and several other youtube channels are helping me a lot. 1 month vegetarian hoping to be full on vegan by the end of the year. I know, I know, having dairy, eggs etc is equally bad but I'm afraid of going fully vegan and collapsing so I'm going one step at a time. So yeah, just a thank you!

Luiza Moreira why would you collapse by going full vegan?
@Luizam557 жыл бұрын
Elmgren76 collapse as in give up in the diet change. Sorry, English isn't my first language!

Cognitive Dissonance. People die every day but when you know these people personally, a larger impact is given.
