Watching Dr Dave made me realize how hard it must be to be on TV with a teleprompter and not default to my "I'm contemplatively reading something" face. As in, when I am reading a book I would find it incredibly difficult to smile or not let my face fall into an emotionless mildly concerned look. Side note: perhaps this is how Tucker Carlson ended up with his signature "I'm confused" look. Would love to see what his face does when he reads a book to compare! Haha

*Medical correspondence/correction* Chas, in this episode you linked the immunosuppressive effects of some intestinal parasites for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) to be protective for infections. IBD is not infective, it's an autoimmune condition - the body’s immune system is attacking itself. The parasites have an immunosuppressive effect, which prevents the immune system from attacking itself. These parasites would secrete immunosuppressive chemicals to protect itself from the body's immune system, which may also protect other microorganisms from the immune system, thus resulting in an increased risk of infection.

I think that the confusion came in because of the reference to the cameraman working with David Attenborough who was attempting to prevent gastroenteritis. Like Chase, I was unable to find anything about this either. Seems counterintuitive at first glance - unless there is a species of tapeworm that secretes anti-amoebic / anti-bacterial chemicals in order to reduce competition for nutrients but I’ve not been able to find reports of that so far. Mosley swallowed the tapeworms in order to provide direct observation of a live tapeworm infection, not for any other purpose as far as I can tell from reading the article referenced...

Comedy music - I'm slightly shocked the spectacular Tim Minchin didn't get a mention! I've got an especially strong soft spot for him as he's from my (former) home of Perth. While I'm thinking of it Bo Burnham's comedy songs are very in vogue with some of my fellow millennials. Tim's music in particular is definitely comedy, they aren't short and they're definitely good (wordplay, real messages, emotional range).

On a serious note, re the possible want of Asian police in NSW, it may have been a decision recognising the threat of possible reprisals in the community against known family members, etc. We had problems at the DPP in the early 2000s finding interpreters from a particular African nation for that very reason.

Just a grammar/geographical correction here from a 15+ year geography teacher; Asia covers from the Ural Mountains in Russia (Istanbul is in Asia and Europe) over to Pacific Ocean. So when you say Asians, you include Russians, Turks, Indians, Pakistanis etc. so ‘East Asians’ or ‘south East Asians’ is more appropriate.

I feel the need to weigh in quite late on music correspondence with another of countless exceptions to Dave’s very good and low stakes rule about comedy songs. Locally grown Melbourne band from the eastern suburbs - TISM have produced many great full length comedy hits such as Greg! The stop sign!, (He’ll never be an) Ol’ Man River, Five yards, defecate on my face, Phillip Ruddock blues, and many others (feels criminal what I’m leaving out). But my reason for mention is their astoundingly funny 40min comedy rock opera “2Pot Screama” which if you haven’t heard is worth a listen. If Jesus was a comedic musician this would have been his sermon on the mount.

@@paulyoung8667>Tism may fit in Chas’ quirky section Thats probably a fair point I just don’t think quirky was very well defined. They’re definitely quirky, but so is Lonely Island and just about any comedy songwriter. I’d place TISM as ‘quirky’ but also predominately satire. I’m glad you mentioned Mr. Minchin, what a brilliant comedy songwriter with great full length songs. Thank you god, inflatable you… just brilliant. The fact that he plays on stage in bare feet however, also a little quirky.

As a musician and performer, are we distinguishing between comedy songs or comedy acts? Think Axis of Awesome, Lano & Woodley, Bo Burnham & Bill Bailey etc. These acts are massively successful and I feel like what makes them funny is that you get to experience the delivery as opposed to interpreting inflection in audio. If Germaine Clement from flight if the concord's head wasn't involved in the listening experience it might be significantly less funny on the first listen.

As always gr8 work guys. Just some more about MMT. When researching UBI it was inevitable that the subject of MMT came up as a major competitor to UBI was Job Guarantee or JG. If the govt were to implement JG they would need to create Infrastructure projects which in turn create jobs BUT would need to release new money to fund these new wages. It was a sort of way of saying that the new Gold Standard is infrastructure spending and whilst this is accredited to the new Modern Monetary Theory or MMT, the practice has been used more than occasionally in the world for umpteen years including in Australia back in the 1940s and 50s to construct the Countries s considerable National Railways project by way of simply printing money to pay the workers wages. Thanks more to come

I do agree that Volcano is one of their better songs, but to disagree with Dr Dave, Tiki God is also a great song. I would also add that Lunatic to Love, Bug City, Toob Amplifier & Mach 5 are also great songs from “The Presidents of the United States of America II” It is my preferred album of theirs, so Dr Dave, I think your younger brother is onto something. Although Chaz is right that Lump is probably their “signature” song.

Lab Grown Meat. Let’s skip the beef, lamb, pork and chicken. There are already industries for that. What I want from lab grown meat is the stuff we can’t get. All we need is the tiniest sample, a bit of unambiguously non-harmful collection of tissue, and then we are off to the races. From the tv show QI archive, it is said that one of the best foods ever was the giant tortoise from places such as the Galapagos Islands. That’s what we should be growing. I want to try that! Similarly, one of the rarest fishes in the world is the Coelacanth, known from the fossil record and thought to be extinct….and then someone pulled one out of the depths of the India Ocean. I will have that as a lab grown fillet with a beer batter. And finally, the taboo food…..yes, its human…..but not just any human. I want to eat the Spice Girls. Let’s face it they have probably marketed everything else. And they so easily lend themselves to the menu and recipes. Ginger?.....…Thai stir fry with ginger. Scary?....... definitely a curry, maybe a vindaloo. Baby?......any dish that would otherwise use veal. Sporty?.......lots of lean and healthy options out there. Which just leaves Posh……which I might not bother with. Let’s face it, from the ‘all of the above’; I am clearly not on a diet.

...sorry, forgot to add the most fascinating crossover in the Venn diagram between medicine and politics: the parasite manipulation hypothesis. It’s a rabbit hole and a half to go down but the theory goes that parasites may be able to change host behaviour, for example Toxoplasmosis gondii infection in rats is seen to cause an increase in risk-taking behaviour, aggression and reduced awareness of danger which therefore increases the likelihood of the infected rat being caught and consumed by a cat, the definitive host of the parasite. If humans are similarly affected by T. gondii or other parasites, it follows that social and political movements may in part be influenced by the presence of parasitic infection in influential individuals or groups of individuals. Mind you, the same could be said regarding environmental pollutants such as lead.. Hope your nose gets better Chas! In defense of Al Yankavic's comedy song Eat It, a parody of Michael Jackson's Beat It: This has bite as a pastiche, making the original message (if you are black in the US and you happen to be at the scene of a criminal act, even completely uninvolved, you are best advised to quit the scene immediately) emotionally more understandable to whites (it's like your mother's cooking, often there's nothing you can do, you just have to eat it).

I don’t think even most democrats would support full term abortions. I think such an extreme position can only hurt him. The democrat position is realistic enough that I doubt people would be swayed to go even further with it.

Fresh controversy or inconsequential view? Let the future decide but Bare Naked Ladies ripped off Frank Woodley's idea and rode it to sitcom theme money.

Chas I too absolutely love I think you should leave and I can concur that “the bones are their money” song. Is a comedy song for the ages. I also remember a parody of the “sunscreen song” that explains all the multitude of ways you can use the word “fuck” in a sentence. I’ve tried to find it recently but was not successful. Love you guys. Keep peppy

You mean the one usually attributed to Python (or Carlin)? It's great, but more spoken word than song.

@@paulyoung8667 I just checked out the Carlin one. It’s the one but it was put to the music of the sunscreen song by someone. Thanks for clearing that up for me! Peppers really are the best people

@@BenBushing-ns5pr I'm wondering if you are thinking of "not the sunscreen song" by John Safran? (trust me on the winny blues...). Again, more spoken word.

Requesting professional pep commentary on the new generation of ai comedy songs. I was a hater, then i heard "I glued my balls to my butthole again". The juxtaposition of genre and lyrics is better than any weird al hands down lol. Yet, not as good as manual reharmonisation/lyric edits, like "Be (!) Worry, Don't (!) Happy". Or as good as Germaine's performance on the Rick n Morty Moonmen song. Or any rick n morty song. My first CD was "im a bloke" (the 'im a b1tch' parody). Aged like milk. My old favourite is Signing Emo by MC Lars, which nailed the trends at the time. His Poe tribute Mr Raven was cool too. Kinda dated and corny now. I saw Jon Lajoie at unibar back in the day. Probably good he moved on to tv. The undisputed masters of music comedy are Tenacious D. Their magnum opus is the original HBO Songs. Its up on yt.

Absolutely loved seeing Dave on the Fireside Chat, well done Dave. I remember sharing onto the Facebook page years ago that proto-PEP with Dave on Planet America back in 2012. It was great to get a part 2 to that.

Personally, I've never been a big fan of meat. The idea of eating something that used to be inside a living body is just icky to me. 🤢 However, as Dr. Dave eloquently demonstrated, there are a lot of people for whom that's no problem. I've never been especially excited about lab-grown meat because it's still ultimately animal muscle, and I suppose it seemed like a thing for people like Dr. Dave, who can't stand the idea of giving up meat, rather than for people like me, who are happy to eat vegetable-based substitutes. However, I'm reading a Shonen Jump manga right now called Kemonokuni (Beastland), one of the themes of which is how lab-grown meat can save animals from the tortures of factory farming. It's also got a fantasy element wherein the meat is grown from the cells of the goddess Amaterasu, rather than from cows, and so it's extra delicious. That story's really warmed me up to the idea of lab-grown meat and made me curious about it. Whenever I read this manga, it makes me hope that one day, lab-grown meat can become a cheap and easy way to replace most of the meats in our diet, and that most meat-lovers and meat-reticents alike can come together on this issue and enjoy all the climate-friendly, ethical meat we want. (This is not calling out Dr. Dave specifically. I imagine there will always be people who want natural meat only. That's fine. As long as MOST people are willing to eat lab-grown meat, and as long as lab-grown meat is as easily available as barn-grown meat, that would make all the difference needed.) I think my experience really goes to show how important your cultural milieu is in shaping opinions you don't already feel strongly about though. That's why it's so frustrating to see lawmakers trying to whip up a frenzy against lab-grown meat. That message will filter through and make some people more reluctant to try the meat if it ever reaches the market in the U.S. (and probably harder for it to reach the market in the first place). And all the politicians would have to do to not be potentially actively harmful is shut up. 🙄
