Personally, games like Death Stranding, Elite Dangerous or Euro Truck Simulator are the ultimate escapism experience. And having fun is definitely something subjective. I can totally understand why people could find these games not fun, but I would definitely still classify them as pure games. Death Stranding is FULL of gameplay, hell, it's one of the only game that makes WALKING and terrain traversal an actual mini-game in itself. I think the difference is that we are used to having our games FULL of shit to do everywhere. Open world games are full of markers in your map ALL the time. Developers are so scared to bore their players that they put way too much stuff in there, to the point of exhaustion. Games like Death Stranding are a real breath of fresh air. It's a real open world game, where you can actually take the time to enjoy the journey. As I got through the game, I also noticed that, while having more infrastructure helps a lot and make the game a lot more confortable and convienient, it is also making the game a little bit more boring and "goal" oriented. I quickly realised that I am personally taking MORE enjoyment out of the game when I know that I will have to go through all of this by foot and that it will be a hell of an adventure. That is why I like this game. While the entire industry is looking at how to make goals the "fun" part of the game, including more and more sub-goals to reach to get your dopamine, like leveling up in an RPG, acquiring a new skill, having your big UI and sound feedback because you just got your perfect kill, etc... This game focus on making the "journey" as appreciable and making last as long as it can. For me, it's an experience that has their place alongside Shadow of the Colossus, Journey and Breath of the Wild.

well wow not for me then giving that discussion. Like my games to be fun...enjoying the journey I have to deal with to much in life itself.

@@kittyspam2146 It's 10 times more fun than a Ubitower open world game, because it's unique and interesting, and doesn't exhaust you with menial tasks. I don't know how people can complain about getting from point A to B because there's a mini game? It's a lot better than most games where you can play blindfolded when moving from one location to the next. The game makes you understand the environment and the difficulty traversing it, before providing you with simple upgrades that feel like a giant reward. Sure, they could have just given you all the upgrades at the start like a lot of open world games these days, but then you'd just be playing it on auto pilot running between markers on your compass or minimap like most boring open world games these days.
@POolBacK
@POolBacK 4 жыл бұрын
@@kittyspam2146 What I have been trying so say is that, here the "Journey" is fun. They made it fun. It's not just push forward to get somewhere, they actually made traversal a game. And with cool music and incredible landscape I'd say it's the perfect way to "escape" life. I don't agree with Cohh, when he says that traversal is not fun and hard, but I guess this depends on personal taste. If you like the kind of meditative/contemplative experiences that are Journey and Shadow of the Colossus, I don't see why you wouldn't like this one.

WeLikeSportz but the mini game isn’t fun or doesn’t seem to be and just moving from place to place to deliver packages....boring. Take away the shooting from metal gear eh not fun...and the ubi games..not for me either but for different reasons.

I played that first area for 10 hours .I've had fun the entire time. yes there was stress and stuff in early game but early game for me was done once u get the bike. and honestly what sucks is the bts never move. I played the first area for 10 hours I found ways to run through bt areas in a bike because I know where all the bts r. I loved the first ten hours . that means I'll love the game. I built 3 bridges and people use them. I love that . and now in the second area I built the road and people r using it. it's amazing

I personally enjoyed the game and haven’t stopped since release. This is coming from someone that likes plays BL, Dark Souls, thief, fallout, and deus ex style games. Also a former trucker, and it still is enjoyable. Though, I skipped right to hard mode right in the start and don’t regret it! The game is relaxing, adventurous, and story driven. Once I found other structures, by other players, I ended up making bridges and helpful stuff for everyone; especially farming to get all the roads up and running. Yeah, not for everyone. But I wish the people who would not give marks just keep their zeros to themselves. The game is well polished, and runs fine. Keep your zeros for games like Fallout 76.

I honestly enjoy the gameplay loop, even the moments where you are “just walking”. I find it at times to be very zen like to play and the mechanics in the game for me create an extremely immersive experience. There are aspects of the game where I feel that the game fell short but for me i don’t think the short comings ruin the experience.

This game was amazing. The graphics, Map design, animation, the smoothness, The character and Vehicles feel apart of the map. This game is next level triple A. I am playing fallen Order now, character at times feels like he is not apart of the Map. But DS is not for everyone. Game really wants you to feel lonely and feel each delivery to be a struggle, early on. Until the online part opens up and easier ways to traverse the map. You never feel lonely after that. But when you feel you can do anything you enter a new map and it puts you in your place, then let’s you feel comfortable again. I just want to jump back in just taking about it

@@sugar5374 They actually are the same core concept. Both games try to foster an altruistic behavior in the player. In journey, it has you go through the experience as a student to then become the mentor. In this one, it's more about being "students" together. In both games, inspiring the desire to lend aid for the sake of lending aid, is a direct focus of the dev team. Yes, they used different worlds, game mechanics and themes to achieve this but that core concept to "help others" is at the root of both games.

I like what you have to say about the artful approach of the game shattering the conventional expectation that games are only a form of entertainment and escapism. What you say about the heavy exposition and pacing issues at the beginning are problematic in all artistic mediums, but makes me think of famous Russian movie director Andrei Tarkovsky. He famously said that he intentionally paced the first hour of his famous post-apocalyptic film Stalker incredibly slowly so the less thoughtful, thrill seeking audience members had an opportunity to leave the cinema before the plot sped up and the exploration of the film's themes began. Maybe Kojima had the same approach with Death Stranding. I look forward to playing it.

I suppose there was a reason Raptor was complaining about demonetization. 2:10 The clearest indication Kojima intended the tedious grindiness was when it gets lampshaded in the first boss fight, with a character asking if this was what the player was waiting for. Anyway, agreed on the story plucking the right emotional strings and the game being a well-executed high-concept masterpiece. But it takes way too long to get to fun open-world gameplay. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea. Kojima not making games is a shame, but I really am curious about the movies he'll make. It's interesting that Death Stranding can be seen as a massive networking opportunity for his studio and Hollywood.

@Goofie I bought it . Did not return it. All these frauds bashing death stranding....here's the thing if they were to post a photo proving they bought the game ....I would say 80% bashing it wouldn't be able to. If we could find out it would easily expose all these pathetic degenerates. We know they didn't buy the game so why are they being taken seriously.....It's an outside looking in perspective. It's like seeing a steak commercial.... How about actually going and buying said product and EXPERIENCING IT?

My brother introduced me to your channel a couple years ago, and I won’t buy or play new games unless I watch you first. Few things: 1. I watch Cohh's thoughts videos for entertainment! My dude, I just love the way you break down games for yourself and everyone else. Thanks! Been watching the channel for years! 2. I really had no interest in Death Stranding prior to this video. When Cohh was talking about the first 10 hours being a bit of a lonely road. I felt that. I hate feeling bad during my gameplay and hate feeling like I'm struggling. 3. Bro you can make ziplines with randos? That sounds dope I'm buying this shit

About 2. I don't agree with Cohh here, I don't think it's much of a struggle. The game clearly displays a character struggling, but I have very much enjoyed this part, it is very gamey to walk around, find the best routes, build things to help you traverse, etc... I think he might have struggled more because he was paying attention to chat. But if you're just sitting down, relaxing, and playing the game, you will see it's some of the best relaxing and contemplative experience out there. After the 10 hours, you get a lot of tools that makes the journey a lot more confortable, but for me, in parallel, it also diminish the game experience for that same reason. It removes most of the challenge of traversal and the game just becomes going from point A to B. 3. Zip lines are cool, but as explained above, it allows you to skip content.

from what Ive understood, cinematics are like 10hrs all together or something, havent watched the game yet, since im debating with myself if I should finally get a PS4 and buy the game with it plus some others, that way I can experience the game for myself without too much spoilery stuff. Or if I should wait till it pops up on Cohhs channel (should they redo all the music for the uploads, which is an immensive amount of work).. So yea, Kojima has already made movies through games.

It seems hyped around Kojima and the story he put behind it. My biggest flaw with open world single player games is the lack of depth in the world itself. Idk, I haven't really payed attention to Death Stranding aside from a few good cutscenes on his Twitch channel.

I'm curious if I pick this game up in 6 months or a year, will other players have all "beaten down" all the paths, built the bridges and ziplines et al to make it a different experience then someone playing now upon release? Or does the game somehow slowly integrate these things?

@@Nathan-is7li I love this game but I do think the UI is it's biggest weak point. I think it's how counter intuitive it is. Yes, you adapt and get used to it over time but it still feels cumbersome at times. Can't tell you how many times I've instinctively pressed a button that I "feel" Should do xyz but does abc instead. (Not sure how to phrase it but I'm talking aboit that "gamer intuition" we've gained from gaming for so long, where we will all instinctively hit the red circle to "go back" in menus. Or X to interact or jump.) It maps things in very odd ways sometimes which makes it feel clunky. I mean, I'm pretty sure it's simply because of how much stuff you can do in this game... but it can be annoying as well.

It's an experience first, game second. I loved it. Spot on, I finished it a few days ago and all then made sense. It played with your perceptions and got you to rethink and really feel. Agree not for all but still can't stop thinking about the ending. It was a brave project and will be remembered in the future.

I understand it can be about getting through the start to get the "good" part, but I really enjoyed the game play from the first minute that I played. Death Stranding is probably my second favorite game of all time. It's absolutely even crazier when you play a second playthrough and you actually understand everything everyone is saying. But yeah, I see a lot of people that just get confused by the story and throw it up to just Kojima weirdness but honestly I think the story is very simple at the end of the day, the story is basically just one big love letter to fatherhood, and what that means, and how connecting can really change the world around us and change our perspective on other people in ways we never thought we would.

I haven’t played it yet but the fact that the game attempts to purposely and successfully make the player feel frustrated and lonely sounds fucking amazing.
