When you say that coils take the same amount of force to compress through the whole travel that would mean that it would bottom out on sag alone. Both shock's spring rates get firmer the deeper you get into the travel but air shocks increase exponentially whereas coils increase at a constant rate.
@seanwylie9
@seanwylie9 5 жыл бұрын
He means that for every unit of travel it takes a certain amount of force to compress the shock to that travel (AKA spring rate). So 1 inch may take 400lbs then the second inch takes another 400lbs for a total of 800lbs to get to 2 inches of travel (and so on and so forth). An air shock has an increasing amount of force to compress the shock one unit of travel. For example an air shock may need 400lbs to compress the first inch of travel, then another 600lbs to compress the second inch of travel for a total of 1000lbs to compress the shock 2 inches. Hopefully that clears it up
@grantwarden7848
@grantwarden7848 5 жыл бұрын
"Rate" means force/displacement. Because of that, the rate of a coil is essentially constant. Air shocks on the other hand have a generally increasing rate, so compressing the shock some distance at the end of the travel takes more force than compressing the shock the same amount at the beginning of the stroke.

I just added a coil (Cane Creek DB IL Coil) to my YT Jeffsy (very progressive leverage rate) and I'd say your comments mirror my own. Currently have the stock DPX2 on my 2018 Hightower LT CC and need to upgrade to something that handles the real chunky stuff here in Phoenix, and so I'm torn between coil vs. air. I know my frame is meant for a more progressive shock, but I have read some tech articles saying that the frame really isn't setup for a super progressive shock, it's almost linear. I would love the coil's small bump sensitivity because there's a lot of that here along with the heavy stuff, but there's a lot of the trails here are mostly climbing so I think that's where I'd lean more towards air.

Even trying different makers to no avail.. Ohlins TTX22 never has failed me yet on all my bikes! But as you say, air is more efficient to climb, pedal in the long run. But wieght it not the issue, its absorbtion..Coil for me until there is a blend of the 2..thanks for sharing Trail Peaks!

I had a custom tuned Fox Van RC coil shock in my previous 130mm bike. Yeah, air shocks are lighter, but I wouldn't necessarily call them more efficient for climbing. It was something about the coil shock that made me hammer up the climbs, never miss the lockout and just enjoy the descents. My new frame has a Float X2 air shock. I don't miss the coil shock as the performance of this state of the art air shock is amazing, but this is exactly the thing: a tuned Van RC coil shock easily matches the performance of the X2, for a weight penalty of 400 to 500 grams, which to be honest I never noticed. p.s. Fine tuning the LSC on a coil shock does wonders to how poppy it feels.

The nomad is a bike that is suited for both coil and air. What’s best depends on your riding style and preferences on weight. Do you find yourself mainly doing fireroad climbs to the top of your descents, do you mind a heavier bike, and finally, do you mind having a bike that’s gonna be a bit more sluggish uphill?

You answered your own question there bud. I had an 18 nomad4 and I ride air for the first 3 months I had it. The last 2 months I rode coil only. The SD AIR makes a nice aggressive trail bike that can handle tech climbs. But coil. Man. With the right spring rate and preload/sag, it really opened up the bike. After riding park and trail on air, then just trails on coil. I highly recommend the coil. Especially since you have 12speed! It’s not that bad. Lock that big girl out and just pedal.

Flow trails/jumps = air, many rocks = coil. However, air's "poppiness" seems to make it easier to do little bunnyhops while going through rock gardens and you end up jumping over more of the rough stuff and not plowing through it as much. You also feel like you are skipping over the tops of the rocks more and losing less momentum. It encourages you to ride in a different way that I think might be faster. You get rattled more, but it is interesting to keep ramping up the progressiveness with air spacers and seeing how it feels. I currently ride a YT Tues (pretty progressive) with maximum air spacers in the shock with less than recommended sag and it is extremely fun and fast. Also, air is gonna pedal better up and down. For trail bikes, if you're fit enough to not be bothered by the loss in uphill pedaling efficiency on coil then you are probably not going to be bothered that much by the slightly harsher descent on air...

The middle part of a spring which has even coli spacing is very linear. However you always have two ends of the springs which are shaped/spaced differently. Which has different compressing rate compares to the middle coils. This in turn makes a spring in practice progressive. Two springs of the same length but with different number of coils. The one with less number of coils will be more progressive. The way you compare two shocks is just flaw. A shock damper is more than its spring mechanism. Have you thought about the difference of the internal dampening of both shocks?

Switched to coil, and Blair Witch nausea cam too? Maybe the old school coil made you want to go old school helmet cam with visor view. :-) Thanks for the recap and comparing the two. I think for people who have a dedicated enduro race bike, coils are definitely the way to go. Climbing time doesnt matter, and you want the most stable and planted rip down the stage. If you have to have "one bike to do it all" then it's hard to say coil, because on longer trails rides...the fatigue will be greater, not to mention the weight penalty. I can absolutely feel the energy loss on climbing with the pedal bob, and that would stink on a 25 mile trail ride.

Converted my 2018 YT carbon pro race to coil front and back and would never go back to air, long berms so much feel what the tyre is doing and that includes dropping tyre pressure for more grip and can feel where I need more pressure so get the most grip in wet conditions especially when rain showers I can feel when to back it off lie yesterday as was running a rear rock razor semi slick so with tyre pressure changes with no improvement so went home and put on a maxxis high roller and run lower pressure and so much more grip. Ok more weight but grip out weighs that. So run Vorsprung coil 50Ib front spring and DHX2 with a 450ib and I use 95% off travel but when dry I use 100% if I push it. Same wit the front 95% off travel used but one big drop off on my course if I push it hard 100% used with no hard bottoming as I can adjust bottoming resistance 4 clicks from fully in.

Coil is smoother over bumps and generally hugs the ground better while the air shock was more supportive in bigger impacts and popped better off obstacles. Many people that I have talked to have had the same experience when trying coil vs air. You can obviously set either one up to feel differently but air suspension by nature will be more progressive, you can't get around that fact and that is why they feel more springy and better for jumping.

@Oh_Sully23

As Rusty said, the Gen2 Bronson doesn't have a very progressive leverage ratio curve so you'll likely struggle to find a spring rate that gives you the supple small bump sensitivity that coil is known for while still having enough bottom out resistance. You may need to run such a heavy spring to not blow through the travel that you'd end up running less sag and having it be quite harsh over small stuff. With the Float X2 I honestly believe you have the best shock for that bike.
@TheNotoriousMIC
@TheNotoriousMIC 5 жыл бұрын
Oh_Sully Oh_Sully you buy the spring that gives you the correct sag and then you run the right amount of compression and rebound or run a firmer bumper. You don’t just keep adding a heavier spring that’s not how it works. All shocks not just coils work better on a linear set up if you set your shock up properly.
@Oh_Sully23
@Oh_Sully23 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheNotoriousMIC I'm not sure I understand your point correctly so I'll remain in disagreement with you. Taking into account the differing properties of air springs vs coil springs, and the adjustments available (I'm yet to find a part number for a firmer DHX2 bumper), there are definitely leverage curves that work better with air shocks and curves that work better with coil shocks.
@TheNotoriousMIC
@TheNotoriousMIC 5 жыл бұрын
Oh_Sully my point is that the spring that gives you the correct sag is the spring for you. The rebound and compression tune is how you get the shock to feel how you want you don’t just keep adding a heavier spring until it doesn’t bottom out anymore. High speed compression is what you add if you don’t want to bottom out mainly and a tad less rebound.

i dont think you mentioned that with a progressive frame, there should be minimal pedal-bob, and even if you have some, a lot of coiled brands have compression switches. my tyee @ 160mm travel coil climbs almost as good as my hugene w/ 140 travel air shock. fully open. downhill there's no comparison. the air shock bounces all over the place, and you'd prolly be surprised at how well you can stay planted on a coil if you're running one for the first time. it is very noticeable. another thing, on more linear frames there are new progressive springs that try to "mimic" an air shocks' late travel resistance. for single pivot frames and such, a progressive spring is a must otherwise you'd either be running a way too stiff spring, or you bottom out a lot. and that ain't no fun!

Each frame has specific dimensions for the shock. As for swapping shocks, yes it shouldnt take too long. Just two bolts to remove and replace.

I mean im a heavier rider (286lbs) and im all for air shocks as they offer way more adjustability and way more forgiveness at the bottom of the stroke. Where as, on a coil as soon as you get coil bind you can fuck the shock completely. Plus, it means i have to buy a couple coils to run with, rather than just pump or loose some air/spacers.

TC Downhill agreed. I used to run air but during downhill runs on the trail bike the shock would start to give up halfway. So I got a Cane Creek DB inline coil and BOY was I faster down the trail! I don’t care about climbing at all but god damn the bike rips downhill so much better

Because coil > air. And if you get the right setup can be just as light. However if you can get a custom tuned coil shock you'll be in heaven. One of the biggest issues with coil is lack of progression (should you need/want/desire that). DHX2 for example has the same bump stop for all of their shocks. It does not take into account your leverage ratio or your frame progression. Obviously an issue if your leverage rate doesn't ramp up much, or if the curve flattens out in the ending stroke. Their dampers are the same (same shock used for every bike), but that's why you've got all those external adjusters. I've got a video on my channel that discusses air vs coil with a lot of the same points you've brought up as well. I'm working on another one that dives into a custom tune vs OEM suspension setup as well.
@hobmarg
@hobmarg 5 жыл бұрын
Curious about your first point, how can coil be just as light? Even the CC DBcoil IL in the smallest size will be close to the weight of the Float X2 once you have a Valt/SLS/Ti coil on it? Apples to apples DHX2/X2, DBAir/DBCoil etc. it's a few hundred grams heavier. Still think it's worth it!
@TheNotoriousMIC

James Stoup hows a lack of progression a bad thing? If you’ve got a custom tuned coil shock then you want it to be linear.
@JamesStoup
@JamesStoup 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheNotoriousMIC It's only bad for those who want a more progressive suspension design. If you're not looking for extra bottom out resistance then you've got no issues :)

@@TheNotoriousMIC exactly do you know you're only one of a very few people who understand the difference between Progressive and linear. a lot of people like to throw those terms around but they have no idea what they're talking about. No way in hell do I want a progressive shock spring combination I want something linear from beginning to end of travel. More consistent better performance. 👍

Here are my 2 cents. The air shock is like the fire dept. it'll show up and save your ass even if there is no fire. The coil is like the police dept. it complains if you hit something to hard, gives you a ticket for going to fast. If you ride trails that don't push the limits, ride a coil, its AOK. But if your the type that needs support when the shit goes down, its AIR all the way baby!!

Progressive Springs are not ideal for any type of performance riding or racing all you have to do is look to the MX world to understand that. Most Motocross and Supercross teams are running linear Springs not Progressive Springs.
