The noise my nice 2016 Asus ZenBook Pro UX501 VW With
Skylake i7 6700HQ
512 GO SSD M2 PCIe
16 Gb Ram DDR4
Nvidia GTX 960m
Something is wrong, the noise reacts with mouse and web page loading. The worst is the electric wistling it makes some times. When it does, I shut it down, it really gives a headache in seconds.
Inside picture from NotebookCheck.net
Sorry I tried film with my phone, but the free sofware I had wouldn't read the format of my phone video. And now that I have a working pc... Well I have other projects.

Same problem here. Using this notebook on a quiet enviroment is extremely annoying. I wonder if dipping whatever is causing it in epoxy could make it better.

This is a problem with ALL skylake laptops. Dell, Razer, Asus, they all have the same exact problem because they all use Intel's Skylake chipset. If you have an Intel Core i7 6700 you will most likely have this whine. Messing with CPU throttling affects it.

i don't think so. Processor and bridge can not be noisy. This problem is related to the power system.

Hi. I have a 3 months old MSI GE75 Raider 8SE and, from the very first day, an audible noise came from under the keyboard, around the Q key area. It was the typical "coil whine" noise and its quite usual in devices with some kind of switching power supply or buck converter (modern motherboards are full of those converters nowadays). Not that the noise bothered me at all, it wasnt loud and I had other "singing" devices before anyway so I'm very used to it, but today I updated the BIOS of the laptop (I was on version .106 and updated to version .117) and the coil whine went away completely. The little machine is dead silent now :) According to the BIOS update history, around version .112 MSI did something about it. I guess they changed the working frequency of the coils to a much higher spectrum so it falls outside of the audible frequencies. I don't know if other manufacturers have the same kind of solution, or if they can fix it this way at all. Just in case it helps anyone with an MSI machine :)

I´ve got an Asus GL502vm and the same annoying sound. As far as I know is a normal sound in this laptops (i7 7700hq and gtx1060). It is a resonance sound that depends on the MHz so it changes (pattern and volume) if you change the speed of the processor/gpu (playing games or changing the power plan in Windows for example). I hope this helps.

I also received my 3. laptop now. I had two times the Asus Zenbook UX501VW-FY145T. Both times this sound. Now I have an Acer Aspire VN7-592G-724S. It has a similar sound, but I have the impression that is slightly less loud. Both have the i7 6700hq. And both have the same graphic cards GTX 960M. I have read that the source of the sounds is either the Graphic Card, Motherboard near the processor or the power supply unit. But I am starting to think that all the high performance laptops suffer from this. Although my 3 laptops all had the same specs :P

I've tested 3 laptops with nearly the same specs. All came with an Skylake i7 6700HQ. The last one was the Asus G501VW (more or less the gaming version of the same laptop). All devices had the same issue. Weird electrical noise from the inside. I compared it to my "old" Ultrabook with an i7 5500U and found out, it makes the same noise but nearly inaudible. On that device I can just hear these noises, if everything is silent and I am as close as possible. Seems like an issue that all powerful laptops suffer from.

+Obli G501 is the same, just 4gb instead of 2 for the graphic card. I might exchange my UX501 VW for a G501 JW or UW501 JW. Tested them, they made 0 noise when cooling resting. My very Old HP, makes that noise too, but it takes a lot of sound proofing of the room and a lot on concentration to hear it.

It would be interesting to find out, what component causes these noises exactly. Maybe it can be exchanged. Since all laptops with this skylake cpu had the same issues I thought it is something regarding this generation of processors and their corresponding hardware which is more or less the same in every device.

Hi. Same problem here with the Dell XPS 15 (9550) w. i7, FHD, 512 GB SSD PM951. I think it's a problem with the new generation (6, Skylake) of the Intel CPUs. I sent my XPS back to Dell.

I recently bought the laptop and on first startup it was clearly audible then decreased in volume but it is still there. It's a real bummer since I got a good deal on it and may have to return it. Same on Asus N752VX (i7 6700HQ). While power plugged-in, and using a wireless mouse, and scrolling a webpage the noise is unbearable. Even at night, unless powered off, it is disturbing. Asked for a replacement, and will see if the noise intensity is the same. My previous notebook was N751JK (i7 4720HQ) and no coil whine. Disabling the Intel gfx didn't help.

Well, they didn't want to replace it, so I just had it returned and got my money back. Looking to buy from somebody else (nobody has it in stock anymore apparently). Before returning it, however, I noticed that the Intel GPU had started failing (which is what I feared from the start, due to unusual amount of coin whine): 1. when waking up the laptop after it had entered sleep mode, the entire screen did not refresh (stuck in the same render as before sleep), and only refreshed/updated after moving my mouse around (refreshed in chunks and bands). 2. The font rendering occasionally presented issues, drawing black squares and lines instead of characters and words. Needless to say, it's clear that the unit was faulty. If you have coil whine when plugged in, make sure you return or send it to service, since that's a clue that there might be a serious problem with the chip/mobo.

Sorry for all the people who had questions, I had no answers. We since bought several UX from Asus in 13 and 14", one 13" does that. Fortunately its main user isn't young and doesn't notice. According to Asus at the time, probably the 5th gen i7. Returned two machines. The store finally agreed to give me a 4th gen i7 UX501, same SSD M2 Samsung inside, no issues, been using it since, the best and most reliable machine I've ever owned. Still by my side today.

i think it's about intel Skylake Version.becaus when you unplug the psu the minimum process state will go in 5% in default.just go to power option, click on change plan settings in your current power option, then click on change advanced power settings.in the new power option panel find the processor power management, and change the minimum processor state, that's caus the coil whine noise.if u change the minimum processor state to 10% both plugged in and unplugged and change the maximum to 70% in both case, you will notice that the coil whine noise will become much more lower, but unfortunately you are not able to use 100% of cpu. i have this problem too,and i'm so disappointed of asus. :((

No, but I found a way to get rid of this killing noise...Control panel - Hardware and sound - Power options, here you switch to the power saving mode. Doing this you cut your laptops performance, this would not load your processor, subsequently - no noise. If this doesn't help, you can try to downgrade more the processor performance in the Power options (for example I have 1500 Mhz "Maximum processor frequency" + "Maximum processor state" is at 62%) This performance is sufficient for chat and watch videos on KZbin. Soon I'll install Linux (OS) to see if it's a problem of software (Windows) or hardware.

Pavel Dolzhenkov well I'm happy with it. Thanks to the PCIe SSD it's fast enough. Works well with premiere Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign. No problem using it connected on a second screen with work on one, and Netflix on the the second. Might just be slower than the VW with Skylake for exporting videos but it's fine for now. Only the air intake is not as efficient than on the VW. While turning fast the frequence of the sound can be a bit annoying. It's ok if you have music on or a movie it's not too loud. The VW had different ventilators and a new air intake under the laptop wich gave him more air. But overall, same use, Same machine, no whine coil. Not too heavy. Not sad to have to have it. You have the G501JW too when you can find one, not as nice looking, but good beast.

I exchanged my 501vw for 501jw. In my newer Asus the clicking sound problem and coil whine noise doesn't appear. So I'd rater recommend 501 jw model. It's very disappointing when you spend quite a lot of money and had to face such annoing problems. Btw a touchpad in my newer Asus is less horrible than it was in the older one, but it's still lousy.

Hi, guys. I have the same problem, but on Dell Xps 9550 Skylake i7 6700HQ, 512 GO SSD M2 PCIe, 16 Gb Ram DDR4, Nvidia GTX 960m. Does anybody know how to solve that issue? Dell has offered to replace the motherboard. Do you think that will help?

+Georgy Gorbunov I saw an article comparing your Dell and the UX501, they said the Dell was suffering from coil whine. I have no idea for your question. But if you find the solution... share it.

it's super annoying! I have it too with my Asus laptop! and i don't know if it is the cpu or that crappy samsung M2 SSD which asus used for my laptop! i said crappy because my laptops HDD was a crappy too! I replaced it with good SSD and that crappy M2 SSD is still there and i blame it for the noise!

I know that the vid is old. But that weird noises are absolutly nornal for SSDs. SSDs aren't quiet! The SSDs in budget laptops aren't quiet twice because it's not the best quality of hardware. Don't get mad like me because not knowing this. If you only hear this when you sit really near to your laptop or holding ear too keyboard than all is right!
@RomainSandt

The noise had nothing to do with the SSD. Came from the CPU. Intel and Asus recognized the issue. The Store exchange the laptop for an other version with only difference being the CPU, same graphic card, same SSD... No electric noise. And the noise only took place when something was going on. Since we've bought 3 other Asus laptops, 1 those this whining... And it's the most expensive. Still using the UX501 the store exchanged me. No issues.

How will you prove that this noise comes from this device? There's no evidence in this Video from what this sounds actually comes. A true Video with this device shown and the Actions you take shown would help much more.
