Coin Dealer Explains How to Get Cheap Silver!

In this video I talk with a coin shop owner about cheap silver. If you want to get low premium silver then this is the video for you. We talk about world silver coins and even damaged silver coins. If you are silver stacking or investing in silver then it is important to look for silver that is priced right. I was able to buy an American Silver Eagle under spot at the coin shop today. World silver coins are not the right this to be stacking for everyone and we talk about that as well. Some people would prefer to stack silver coins, silver bars and silver rounds which would fall into the silver bullion category. I love going to different coin shops and seeing their selection and Harry's Coin Shop has one of the best!

When my daughter was little, she found old silver coins in the sand at the water's edge on many trips to the beach. I would usually have to point them out and say "What's that?" "Dig a little." "See what it is." "Oh, it's an old silver coin." She still has not figured out that Dad bought up some old junk silver coins and dropped them in the appointed spot, and pushed them a little into the sand, two seconds before pointing them out.

I did a similar thing to my 9 year old grandaughter who because she's a coin collector and saves most of her money we call her the family banker. I installed a couple of junk quarters into the rolls and told her to look for pre 1965 coins. She now has over $400 in silver. Most junk silver but a few new silver dollar coins and two one ounce bars. Hope to give her a 1/10 ounce gold piece when she graduates grade school & an ounce of gold when she graduates high school. Don't want to think what coinage to give her when graduating college.

Been collecting this type of world junk for a while now. Average premium for my stack is -2% when buying. Throwing them together by purity is great for keeping track. There's only a few different purity percentages that are real common, so a few small boxes is plenty to store it all neatly. Keep up the great content!

Done this for many years and in the Long Run it Is a lot harder to sell as Few refiners will accept a bunch of coins with many different Silver percentages in a bunch of coins...

Foreign silver is always fascinating. And a lot of times dealers aren't versed in key dates like they are with U.S. coins so you have a shot at finding something really nice. I got 10 ounces of foreign silver from a dealer in PA and found an 1860 Italian States Emilia 2 lire coin valued at around $200.

Most sole proprietor coin shops were like Harry’s when I started collecting in 1970. These were friendly, fun, interesting places where the HOBBY took higher priority than making a fast buck. The old time dealers were also great mentors - teaching young collectors the ropes of how to be a numismatist. 😊

My entire stack consists of german marks and austrian schillings. 5 mark are 11g of 625 10 mark are 15.5g 625 or 925(1998-2001) 50 schilling are 20g of 900 or 640 depending on year. 100 schilling are 24g of 640. I often find them below spot. They all can be exchanged at the bank for euros, so even if silver drops absurdely low i can still get about 70% of the purchase price back. I can't bring myself to buy ounces of finesilver, they kind of just don't feel right.

Harry knows his stuff. The New Zealand One Florin (Kiwi) is 50% silver. It changed post 1945, to copper-nickel base.

5:43 Something you should know: They are some european silver coins which are quite expensive. For example 5 swiss francs from 1907. Over 150 swiss francs in average, 5 Mark Hamburg from 1893 over 50 swiss francs in average. 2 Reichsmark 1938 mostly 10 swiss francs or more for 5 grams of fine silver. I'm swiss and i have a lot of european junk silver. That's why i know it.

Canadian pre 1967 coins are 60% silver, so for every $10 pre 67 gives you 6oz of silver. Only pertains to dimes, quarters, 1/2 dollars and silver dollars pre 67. Another bit of info for you is that 1967 is the centennial/100th anniversary year for Canada as it was founded in 1867 so it is an easy way to remember that anything pre 67 has 60% silver in them.

The premium on Britannia’s are lower in the US than the UK which I find bizarre. 3:52 In Europe they had union called latin coin union. Italy, Greece, Switzerland, France etc. made coins with the same weight in 835 silver. They are silver coins from Europe in 400, 500, 600, 625, 640, 650, 680, 720, 800 silver etc. It's sometimes difficult to figure out!

i always prefer silver circulated(uncirculated is welcomed as well, if cheap LOL) coins over simple bullions. Some of them, if at least at F~VF, could fetch extra numismatic value to certain buyers. For starters, British & colony cents/pennies/florins/crowns are the cheaper ones to look for, Americans can try some Mexican or Peruvian ones. 70% of my stacks consists of these ones, others are mixed with bullions, proofs and modern BUs.
