Amazing that you can buy an uncirculated bag of coins like that from a charity shop. I'm watching from the states and over here I am guessing this would be similar to a thrift shop or goodwill store. I have just started getting into pre-decimal currency so I appreciated the explanation re: the difference between the English and Scottish Shillings. Great video!

@@CoinPatrol I have a small collection of coins including a 1889 shilling a 1910 shilling and a 1970 shilling .I believe this is from a proof set.They are just stuck in the wardrobe now .

My dad used to work on the gas board emptying meters. In the 1970s he used to come home every evening with a huge bad of shillings and florins then sort through them fishing out all the pre 1947s and swapping them for newer coins. We still have a whole stack of them. With the amount of silver they contain they should be work a few quid now.

You did well there Paul, on the 1919 shilling they also omitted K.G. initials, do you know why? I noticed the Queen's head on the obverse was not as strongly struck as the reverse striking's, this was also a problem on the South Africa union £. s. d. series I wonder who made the obverse dies for both mints?

Some of the British Whitman folders are getting tough to get. I'm having a hard time finding an empty 1860 to 1880 Penny book for my set.

A BU 1964 is the only non-silver that I have. I collected it in 1964 during a trip to London. My collection ends with 1946.

I'm 73. I remember using farthings. You could get 1 aniseed ball or 1 salad fruit or 1 black jack for a farthing. 1 single ciggie for my grandma for a penny happeny.

I don’t mind the lack of gloves at all…but the surfaces of most of those coins were in amazing condition, hardly knocked about at all. Even the older ones. Every time you threw them into your hand or scraped them together I winced at the noises 😂 . And even without gloves, surely at least touch just the edges so as to minimise any future damage from the sweat and oils from your skin? Beautiful set of coins. I’ve got a whole jar of shillings that I collected as an ignorant teenager years back.

They are in very good condition, got my Magnet so funny the warning paper. I now have my 1st £2 Coin which is not bad out of 50 of them. I am going to make a controversial post, got to clear my desk and get camera set up. Love the Magnet have you tried getting something smaller the the thing itself?

Hi Ian. Proof coins are struck using hand-finishe dies and is the highest quality of coin a mint produces, made specially for coin collectors. A NIFC (Not Intended For Circulation) is a normal coin, but in 1976 it was only minted for coin year sets.

Why is there a dot after the 7 in the date at 8.59 ?

I don't know what the significance of the dot is, but it' appears on every 1947 Scottish Shilling.

Hi Paul, you did well finding these and for £5, whenever I ask it's always "no we haven't got any" or "they get taken to the bank". I did get lucky with some world coins in Luton not that long ago, but considering how many was there and what I paid for them i would of been better off just getting a KG but it was for a worthy charity.

Just worth saying that the first English shilling of 1953 is actually the Obverse 2 variety. As opposed to Obverse 1.

I had those books that I put my coins in. The acid in the paper eventually corroded the pennies and nickels. Hopefully the ones in the UK are different. EDIT: I see yours were made in Racine, Wisconsin.

Bob-a-Job's a good'un 😁 Great condition on those coins, and a steal at the price you paid for them. I get the same knock back answers when I ask about coins in Charity shops. Haven't managed to get a single coin, Uk or World, from any of those establishments yet. Sometimes banks have a few in their safes that they will accumulate, and then send en masse as "garbled coin" once a year back to the Bank of England, who then I suppose send them back to the Royal Mint for melting down. 🧲

I always ask charity shops if they have any coins. Last year one had an old album with Victorian coins in it and a couple of nice George III pennies. They said they couldn't sell it to me though because the boss wasn't there and they had no idea what to charge me. They said she'll be in tomorrow. I went back the next day, the boss was there but they couldn't find the coins! Very odd! I must have asked in over 100 shops over the years and these shilling were the only time I was lucky. 👍
