@ohmercy59245 жыл бұрын
These are really beautiful. Really innovative. It’s good to watch the process of testing, “mistakes” trying again till hitting on the problem solver. Art is basically solving problems, creating order from chaos. I just started watching coin rings being made the last couple of days.i have yet to see one made in a size below 11. I’m not saying they aren’t there - I just haven’t run into them yet. It would be great if an explanation of the tools used- a lathe is easy but the tools used to cut the hole, pushing into ring shape etc. Ive done fabricated jewelry but I don’t know what they are. Great job. I like the wood on the outside best I think. Subject to change! Lol

Slick project. I wonder if your original colored pencils would have worked if you had used your vacuum pump on the epoxy rather than trying to harden them first? Seems like that would have drawn the epoxy into the softwood of the pencils and likely bonded really well? It also might have left the exterior coloring of the pencil as well. Thoughts?

I hope it's ok to ask a question. I just started watching your videos, so this may have already been asked and answered..... When making your colored coin rings you cut off the ring design making a smooth surface to color. And your rings are beautiful. But I was wondering if you could leave the impressions and color them to achieve an Indian Ink type of look. Have you tried this? How did the finished ring turn out ? BTW I'm 71 years old and have just started to make coin rings as well as rings from formed silverware. So, considering my age, I need to learn fast! Ha!

If you read these, do you mind letting me (us) know what you put the pencils in right after you put them into the plastic container with cactus juice? I have not googled any of this, and I am sure I will work out these details that way, but at what temperature did you have your (oven?) set to when you baked the pencils soaked in stabilizer? Thanks in advance, awesome video too brother. Fixing to watch some more to try and figure out what the thing is at the beginning in the background that's covered in coins too.

Great project. Theoretically, couldn't you make the coin almost any larger size and use the pencils as a filler for the actual size, by leaving more of it in? Thereby showing more of the color pencils? Love how it turned out either way!
@CoinRingsfromTheMint5 жыл бұрын
Yes you could. The only issue is that the ring gets a bit awkward to wear as it gets thicker.
@jasonsummit18855 жыл бұрын

I think the reason for the stabilised blank failing is because you coloured the outsides in with pencil, which is wax-based and doesn’t play well with resin. You can usually get away with stabilising regular pencils but if you’re going to have a point of failure, it’s almost always where the waxy pencil is. Using watercolour pencils works best for stabilising IMO because they’re water-based rather than wax-based
@jonnyboy87494 жыл бұрын
Sorry to double comment, but now that several months have passed how have the rings been holding up? Is the one with the pencils on the exterior wearing better or worse then the other?
@CoinRingsfromTheMint4 жыл бұрын
I dont wear them too often but I have noticed the seal on the pencils on the inside of the band has worn away and I end up with a colorful finger lol. I have discovered all the non precious metal rings like the wood ones all fail eventually. That is why I stopped selling them on my website.

Gosh, that's discouraging haha. I am (in the process of) making one for my daughter. I have done a small amount of research on adhesives and resins, trying to narrow down a list I have that's full of great products but does not have one that stands out as "perfect" for this endeavor...ugh. I will probably end up making 20 of these things when all is said and done haha. Hey, thanks for responding brother. And again, the ring is beautiful.
