CoinWeek Sponsor and creator of The Coin Course, Jerry Shaffer teamed up with CoinWeek to produce this great step-by-step demonstration of what happens when you dip and clean vintage silver or gold coins.
To the untrained, the fastest way to damage a vintage coin and ruin its NUMISMATIC VALUE is to treat it or clean it with metal polish or other foreign substances.

I won’t be selling my coins for the patina...I will be selling it for the Silver Content....999 fine silver. I suppose it would be different for a collector, collecting old coins who wants them to look their age. That’s fine.... There is one reason to clean and one reason not to. Cleaning a .999 Silver coin won’t damage the silver value.

If you dip AU and MS coins with some previous luster, they will not get detail grades. Only if you scrub them abrasively. I can't tell you how many coins I've dipped or "cleaned" that I've submitted and gotten back problem-free. I've even dipped some XF coins and gotten problem-free grades. The key is that you do it properly.

My grandmother left me 60 silver dollars from the late 1880s through 1922. All of them were well circulated. I placed a few of them on eBay before cleaning and sold them for around $80 apiece. I cleaned the remainder and sold them on eBay for around $120 apiece. This was roughly 15 years ago. I guess it all depends on who your audience is and how much they are willing to spend. According to my experience, most people wanted the shiny and new coins.

And I thought it was a bold choice for the director to let it play out in a 2-shot, without cutting to their singles. cleaning a coin is some times necessary. if you know anything about silver and PVC you know that if you have PVC on the coin it is ESSENTIAL to remove the PVC because the PVC will erode silver. So no..."never clean a coin" is a myth. Never harshly clean a coin. Also, when you send it in to NGC to have it graded...there is an option to have THEM clean it (called conservation). If the number one grading service CHARGES you to clean a coin....then there is nothing wrong with properly cleaning (conserving) a coin. I have been in this business since the 70's. Finally, these coins are over 100 years old...to think that you can find a coin that someone didnt wipe off at some point in its 100 year life is ridiculous (unless you find a hoard behind a wall or something...its likely it was "cleaned" at some point.

I agree completely! If you think about simple logic, not cleaning a coin would only apply to COIN collectors. And vintage old coins at that point. If a pirate stole that from a rich person in the way old days then totally don’t clean it. If it’s an American coin from the 80s and you’re investing in PRECIOUS METALS. Then clean the hell out of it. It’s the metal that matters, not aesthetics. Use logic people. There’s a difference between precious metal investor and a coin collector. Just like a comic book. Never repair a comic book. Drops in value. Etc

I do agree with video for the most part. I myself won't clean anything rare or semi rare. But there are a lot of coins that aren't worth much over melt, even in nice condition. So from time to time I'll break out the Dremel and the silver polish to kinda see what people saw when these coins were newly minted and they're beautiful. I get the whole never clean a coin thing, but in the end, they are my coins and I can do with them what I wish.
@cavscout888
@cavscout888 Жыл бұрын
Way too abrasive to be a good thing for the coin. Even if not worth more than melt(actually worth spot still, not melt; only dealers pay melt because they want higher profit on resale) or face. There are much better 'intervention' methods if you decide it's justified. Honestly 'I break out the Dremel tool' is exactly why even the collectors, dealers, and conservators will say 'don't clean coins.' Because you will do all the wrong things.

I have a 1 ounce Asahi bar that slipped out of its plastic flip and half of the bar is toned and the other half is perfectly clean. It’s as if you took a straight edge and made a line exactly down the middle. I think it would be OK to clean a bar like that there’s no numismatic value.

Well my analogy is that you can have a dirty bathroom to use or a clean one to use and enjoy, not being a re-seller in search of profit and a real collector that enjoys nice looking things in life prefer historical beauty over profit. That's just my 2 cents.

92 - Cleaning This is a tough category and the subject of much debate and discussion over the years. PCGS interprets cleaning as surface damage due to any form of abrasive cleaning. "Cleaned" covers a wide range or appearances, from a grossly polished coin to one where faint hairlines can be seen only at a particular angle or in only one area on an otherwise perfectly normal coin. This is perhaps the most frustrating of all the No Grades, because subtle cleaning is often difficult to detect in less-than-optimal grading conditions. "Dipping" (the removal of toning with a chemical bath) is not considered cleaning under this definition, unless it has been done repeatedly or improperly. In the past, many coins were cleaned by well-meaning numismatists, before the dangers were fully understood.
@acmecondorsrealm8357

Step1 add some soap to some non tap water mix it well. Step 2 dip the coin in the soapy water solution several times you can shake the coin lightly and let the water n soap do the trick. Step 3 rinse off the soapy water with some non tap water to get dirt and debris off the coin repeat steps 2 and 3 again if needed. Step 4 dip the coin in the dip for 5 second then right after back into the soapy water dunking the coin several times then Rinse off the coin with non tap water then pat the coin don't rub the coin with a non abrasive cloth and you have dipped a coin the correct way and will not destroy the value. The only way you will ruine the coins value is with prolonged dips and or removing attractive toning. Not all toning is attractive especially if the toning isn't uniform on the coin and you have hot spots and random unattractive tarnish spots that look ugly. check the video I'm going to post soon about what attractive toning looks like thanks.

The uncleaned the Morgan lacked eye appeal and was dirty in addition to the scratches, which was still present after cleaning. All the major coin third party graders clean coins under the auspices of "conservation" A little knowledge and practice with this very product can produce great results but you are not using this product correctly. Some coins have zero eye appeal due to black toning or have other distracting marks that can safely be removed and still make a number grade at the TPGs.

Jim Halperin ( Heritage Galleries ) has often told the story of a 1799 bust dollar that was choice unc but toned an ugly mottled brown. He was the one to dip it back in the 1970's and it came out fabulous with blinding luster. It's value (and market grade) went up dramatically. You never dip a circulated coin as you did here but there aren't a lot of brilliant uncirculated Morgans that haven't been carefully dipped.

Personally, I think this advice applies primarily to numismatic collectors -- particularly those interested in grading. Stackers probably don't need to worry too much about this, since in the end silver is silver and you're likely only going to receive SPOT or MELT prices from your local coin shop. In other words...if you like your coins shiny...shine 'em up! Just understand that any numismatic value may be affected in the process. (And many stackers won't care.)

Toning on the coin in this video is not desirable to any ends. Now there are circumstances where natural toning that is desirable to the eye should not be removed but this guy's coin does not fit that criteria at all. I will post a video about attractive toning that you should not remove and then you understand the truth.

Do what you want with your coins. If you are trading or selling them then they are not your coins, you are holding them, but your coins, do what you want. If you are a collector you will have a lot of coins. A collection without the variety of what some coins use to look like in their day, is a dull collection. Shine some of em up and display. Have a double of a coin, shine one and leave the other. comparison display. Do what you want with your coins.

Everything is only worth what someone else will pay for it. The funny thing about the 'coin community' is that it works almost like no other collectible market. If I have a rookie Babe Ruth baseball card and it had a bunch of grime on it, it would be worth way less than if it was in 'Mint' condition. I would rather display clean coins instead of the dirty ones and if more people agreed to that then cleaning them would become the norm and more valuable.
@voidremoved
@voidremoved 2 жыл бұрын
lots of people do things wrong and it can get all scratched up with bad cleaning. So a dirty coin might be better than a scratched coin? Probably a reason that coin community say "Don't clean your coins" might be for people who find/inherit a rare coin, but it looks dirty so the first thing they do is rub it and scrub it and scratch it up?

Except it’s like you got the Babe Ruth card wet and scrapped off the front half. Removing all the detail. Every time you “clean” your removing a layer of the coin’s metal and details. Hence why you can barely make out the details on old coins.

What about silver bullion like maples or 1oz generics? Would you clean those?
@C.Double.

Ive worked in conservation for many years, metals, textiles, wood... its common practice to tell the generall public that cleaning is bad because 90% of those people will not seek out info on the correct way to do it and will more times than not, de-value items because of it. Anything invasive is bad, scour, scrub, grind, strip... gentle and in small steps is the way to go. Also, the word/term "patina" is often used incorrectly... rust and dirt is NOT patina.

Awesome !! I was told by my grandfather back in 1978 to NEVER polish any of my coins. You are correct !! I went to a coin show and asked a dealer his opinion of cleaned coins. He said the exact same thing. Cleaning coins are graded lower then aged coins. He said dirty coins or coins with patina will be graded higher then coins that were cleaned .. he went on explaining about brush and swirl marks and something about the strike plate on the coin.... that was above my pay grade lol. So I leave them alone. I have inherited so many wheat pennies that I may have a 1909 VDB... or the 1955 double die. Too many to go through. However, in my will, my daughter will be happy. She doesn’t know about my collection. I just hope when she has a child, she will continue the tradition and pass them on.

Yet we pay to have a third party grading service 'conserve' an old coin. So what's the difference for a 'professional' to conserve a coin or a collector dipping a coin? Most of the time even dealers or third party grading services can't tell the difference. In my opinion, toning, as beautiful as it can be, is coin degradation.

@Shawn Jerome - Obviously not Academy Award Winning, but that was not the point. What was said, was. That is what a true dealer would say to someone who brought in cleaned coins. If a dealer purchased it at all, the seller might get 10 to 25% of the true value. There are some dealers who will not buy cleaned coins, period or will only pay melt. That is why no collector should clean coins under any circumstance.

I think the majority of Morgan dollars in slabs have been dipped and it's not necessarily a bad thing. It just doesn't make sense for a coin to stay bright white for over 100 years. Obviously you should keep the dips short and dry them carefully.

well I bought some lower value silver dollars for my collection, cleaned em ,put em in my book and I highly doubt anybody would know they are "cleaned". Its funny how they say don't clean your coins yet you can pay the grading companies for "restoration/conservation" of a coin. Restoration is cleaning and the grading companies don't penalize if they get the $$ for doing it. I say clean your coins if you want to

old time old collectors are becoming the minority in the hobby... From my experience you put that dipped coin on ebay it will sell for upwards of $35 quickly.... non dipped you might get your price but usually it will sit.... people today like bright and shiny by the way without total rinse ... TOTAL you have ruined it... it will go dull from the residue

I agree with you sir, if people buy it on ebay but the professional disagree. Then the professional is blind to the market, not 'experienced'. Personally I like silver that's all and I like knowing my stuff is old and rare, if it's cleaned it doesn't make it less rare as far as my understanding goes so eh... better than green and black rusty silver coins

I usually only clean coins if they have been cleaned before because you can see the old dirt residue lines along side and in the coin's crevices. I remove all of those dirt outlines which makes the coin look much better. Believe me, someone will still buy that coin for as much or more than I did!

I get it, but I don't agree with the premise. My opinion is that coins and PM rounds should be shiny, and not look like they were just pulled out of a manure pile. All these graded coins behind plastic are shiny and everyone Ooos and Ahhs, at how beautiful and valuable they are. Shiny behind plastic is great, shiny without plastic isn't? It makes no sense.

I've got about 20 wheat pennies that I put in CLR and they came out looking better. I then took about 4 of those and rubbed, stove top made of glass, cleaner on them, using only my fingers and those 4 all look great. Now I don't know what to do with the other 16? If the CLR has already "ruined" them, seems to me I might as well clean the rest with the stove top glass cleaner. All of this "don't clean a dirty coin" is so screwed up to me. If you take something that looks bad and dirty, and make it look good a clean.......you've ruined it! Go figure.

Should you clean coins? All depends on what coins you have, and what you want to do with them. Common coins/dates? Who cares? Stacking instead of investment? Who cares? Got a coin worth something? No. Want to have a coin graded? No. FACT: 90% of unslabbed coins sold on eBay have been cleaned at one time or another (coins are also sold that have been artificially toned). If your coin is rare or desired for any reason...it WILL sell, cleaned or uncleaned. FACT: YOU own your own coins...do with them what you want, not everybody gets into coin collecting to make a buck. FACT: Maker of this video should keep his day job...acting is NOT his forte.

I have an analogy for you. This is akin to “mall grabbing” in skateboarding. Holding your board by the trucks. It’s frankly a dumb ideology, has no purpose except to let the purists stroke their own ego and look down at “posers”, and in the end is just an OPINION on “the right way” to do things. By all means, if you have a million dollar coin, and intend to sell it, don’t clean it. Also, people say they want to see what a 100 years of wear has done to an old coin, but you seem to discount the people who want to see what an old coin would have looked like brand new. I have a 63 Franklin half dollar worth about 8$. It’s my lucky coin, and I’m cleaning it.

Would have been better to ask the coin dealer what the coins is worth BEFORE cleaning and then what is it worth when they see it after cleaning. I would go to 3 different places before and three different places after. Then you would have solid numbers. I believe most dealers will ALWAYS find a reason to low ball. They want to buy as cheap as they can and sell as high as they can. They aren't a charity to help you. If i show up with a dirty looking coin or a bright shiny one, I would think most people would buy the shiny one. If they are considered "cull", i would clean them, they will never be worth less than melt price anyways, but cleaned, someone might pay more.

Wait a minute. You didn't follow the instructions. You failed to wash the coins with water. Water helps to dilute the chemical and stop the chemical reaction. If you want to make your point, at least follow the directions. Restoration is NOT the same as cleaning a coin. Using a chemical without stopping the reaction by avoiding the dilution process is not really making a valid point. Friends don't let friends drink straight whiskey without a water chaser...for a reason. And friends shouldn't let friends make exaggeration videos. Next time, try reading the instructions on the back of the chemical you're going to use.

This video was made to make a strong statement/claim. It goes too far in its argument, like most do when trying to argue a point, especially since it lacks any nuance. If only things were as straight forward as this video makes it seem. The grading companies will properly clean your coins, and museum and other conservators constantly perform 'intervention' on coins. Not only that, there are many instances where the coin is actively degrading and would be destroyed if not for strong intervention. Sometimes even full restoration is the only thing that will keep an object preserved into the future.

Anything less than AU on Morgan's I don't see how dipping would lessen the value unless it's a key date. Cleaning and Dipping are 2 different things. I do agree with the video and would never ever even dip a AU Morgan or higher grade.
